ARB SUSPENSION, AIR SYSTEM & MORE. AndrewSPW Land Cruiser build-10

  • I choose to fit ARB Old Man Emu BP-51 (51mm bypass) shock system to the Land Cruiser together with a set of springs to enable a more comfortable ride with high payloads. We selected 600kgs constant load springs at the back, and front springs to support the bar and winch. We may have to adjust them later if they prove too heavy for the load to be carried.
    At ARB I also fitted an air system consisting of a tank, double-compressor and an air system with valve attachments front and back.
    An ARB thick-tube winch bar, Warn Zeon 10-S winch with synthetic rope, steering/engine protection plate and ARB's recovery point were attached. I now have two purpose made recovery attachment points at the front, and wheel arch flares.
    Insurance concerns:
    Am I still covered? Yes. As long as the lift does not exceed 2 inches post load, and that I have not exceeded the GVM. GVM upgrades can be insured, but not all companies will continue cover.
    The next stage will be the colour change. Demonstrations of this equipment will be included in more videos to come.

    I fiitted out a ute back in 2008 with ARB gear and OME suspension and nearly 10 years later there has never been a problem with any of their products I had installed. My father bought the ute off me recently and he is planning to do a few trips in it it and I feel confident as the day I had the equipment installed.

    Well mates, I late to this party, as usual for me. I like this. For my uses, an onboard compressor would be very good to have. I've learned a bit about shocks by watching videos, and never knew how often shocks fail! I don't offload much in USA, but like to be fairly prepared anyway.

    We had the Old Man Emu BP51 shocks fitted when we did the Canning last year and I can't praise them highly enough. The other 2 vehicles in our convoy had Ironman and Pedders heavy duty shocks upgraded on their vehicles. Unfortunately, neither of them made it past Kunawarittji and were unable to complete the journey. You've made a good choice there Andrew!

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I don't know Pedders, but IronMan! The OR suspension is tougher and has a better ride than it. It's a suspension downgrade, not an upgrade.

    • @IDontTalkToCops
      @IDontTalkToCops 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. Yes, well I use the word "upgrade" with tongue firmly in cheek! Another advantage we had was that we were in a Landcruiser Prado with coils all round and the other two were in leaf sprung 4wd utes so we were able to cruise up the big dunes that were all chewed up with all the holes, steps and corrugations with ease while the other two vehicles needed a huge run up and "bunny hopped" from a qtr way up at full power just to make it over. Couldn't have been good on any suspension system. Have you heard of Jmacx coil conversion kit which I believe they make for your vehicle model? You're looking at big bucks (around $10,500) but if you really want the ultimate troopy, boy what an upgrade that would be.

      Not at all sir. That is not my style at all. Just like motor makers loan cars to journos for reviews, same here. If I don't like it, I say so and give it back. If I like it, I have permission to continue using it. It's that simple. But by the same note, no motor maker hands over a vehicle to a journo unless that know that they will get some column inches of magazine copy and pics. Same things goes here. And that is what this video is about. Now, we will begin testing the items and will report back. We owe ARB NOTHING for donating the equipment. We are offered kit all of the time, and when we think that items will serve us well, and in all probability high quality, we accept the offer. Read the disclaimer on my website: 4xoverland.com/?p=16210

    In with the old and in with the new great bespoke suspension build for the needs. You are trying to get choice of ride given conditions at any given time. Budget aside it's good to see what can be done in prep. Endless test situations. The attention to detail is probably un-matched. Very interesting to see how it rides when it's all fitted out.

    Hi Andrew, I have watched many of your amazing videos and have learned immensely and have been so much more motivated to go off-roading and overlanding in Southern Africa.
    But I have not watched all your videos yet, so maybe this following point has already been covered, could you - maybe in a future video or reply to comments - talk about the right type of shoes to wear when driving (off road / overland)? The usual hiking type footwear (I use one from Merrell brand) is not so comfortable in driving...

      The man in the United Airlines skit walked back on to the plane ten minutes after being knocked out and dragged off the plane. He was then filmed at the back of the plane repeatedly saying, please don't kill me, please don't kill me, and and there wasn't an agent in sight. Who was he talking to other than the tv audience that the skit was created for? How did he get back on the plane without anyone stopping him? I wonder if he will get a nomination for the Academy Awards? People believe anything they see on tv. Don't ask why they did it but ask how he got back on the plane after been knocked out and dragged off of it ten minutes earlier. It was a skit. Nothing is at it seems!

    I personally don't like my BP51s on my Tacoma. The springs and other components get in the way of adjusting the shocks. As well as I have to really stick my head and torso into the wheel well which can get quite muddy. It looks like it'll be easier for you since the front shocks aren't in the springs. Besides that the ride is great with mine. They performed great on my trip through the Mojave.

    In WA, you can only lift your vehicle 50mm by way of lift kit, body lift and tyres (in combination). Essentially, anyone in WA running a 2 inch lift with bigger tyres has an illegal vehicle. Which means you have to get it engineered for it to be legal. Obviously this measurement is added to the standard roof height of the vehicle.

    • @IBAdrianHarris
      @IBAdrianHarris 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Boots are a blessing and a curse in my experience. Help protects against rocks chipping the shaft, but also traps water, mud and grit around the seals. Most shocks now days use hardened steel shafts to protect against rock chips - but I would also recommend fabricating a small stone guard to protect as well. This combination works well - and is what you see on most modern dirt bikes for example that have much more suspension that is much more prone to damage than on a vehicle.

No 2 Air compressor, I will be looking into upgrading mine to the new lines and resevoure, had some issues with the lines to my rear air locker. No 3 Rear bar and holder, mounting the spare on the door is unacceptable, the weight droops the door and becomes difficult to open, I bought a Kaymar with additional Jerry can holders for water one has a tap, very usefull. If you were forced to pick one to purchase first on a 80 Series LC running 33" mud tires, would you choose the ARB air lockers Fr and Rr, or a 2.5" lift? Right now it's stock suspension and I do have a winch.

      The load carrying capability and 2-way adjustability is what makes them special. If you don't need that capability, then you don't need BP-51s. Icon is trash in my experience.

      Wow, that's awesome. Your Troopy is shaping up to be one of the best Overland vehicles I can think of. If you haven't already looked into Goose Gear, definitely check them out when you're in the states. Looks like you're going with the best of the best, and I personally think they're the best in lightweight/strong storage.

    ARB's work and gear are on par on what mechanics work should be, no offence to them intended, but that is what mechanics should be striving for as minimum standard when it comes to modification and servicing of vehicles.

      I have noticed that for some reason Old Man Emu gear seems to elicit a strong response from armchair experts who will tell you some anecdotal tale of how their cousins, mates, uncle had a bad experience. It seems like it's one of those brands the gear snobs love to hate and I have never figured out quite why that is. I'm sure we're all very keen to see how they stand up to the flogging you will dish out to them doing the Canning.

      ARB are not best at anything, but they are good at many things. I've used a lot of ARB stuff in the past, before I moved interstate, because I had a good relationship (and received a nice discount) with my then local ARB store.
      I don't like, and have replaced the OME suspension stuff, because of bad experience with them. The new BP51 shockies are a step in the right direction, but I won't be buying any.
      Just like there are wankers who have had bad experiences with OME, there are wankers who swear by them. Calling me a wanker can't change my experience or opinion.

      @@4xoverland so you are saying after giving lr3 and 4s thumbs up that they are the best of all yet you say they will never make an Overlander .Well just take a look under neath and tell me they are not built like a brick!! If you spend the money you are spending on that chassis motor and gear box vehicle which is all it is !.. that a Landy 3/4 wont perform just as good if not better than a Land cruiser .Seems you have got into the Aussie misconception.The bushes alone on a Land rover 3 are huge and just as strong as a Troopy geez! also you poo poo air bag suspension yet you install them on that Cruiser only to make it as good as a LR3/4.The Landy 3 diesels have Ford motors and ZF transmissions .How long have Ford been around ?? Not only that but their payload capacity is more than a 200 series @ 845 kg. I would love you to front Aulro haha. Andrew wake up man !!!!

      Hi. I think its the most underrated shock. Most people think this shock is expensive. But for a bypass shock wich can adjust rebound AND compression its favorable. Comparable bypass shocks are twice the price. So, maybe you will do a Video about your suspension performe. I run this Bp51 in my Jk and it was worth ever ct.

      I know to within 10% the final weight to be carried. And right now, its right in the middle. 600kgs may be too hard, and 400 may be too soft. I know the exact additional weight of the front, so it was easy to determine which springs would work.
