USING VPN IN CHINA! Isn't It Illegal??

  • The ultimate guide to using VPN in China + the best VPN for China. Internet censorship in China AKA the Great Firewall is kind of scary when you're not used to it, but once you learn the basics and purchase a great VPN plan, you'll understand why it's not so scary after all. In this video I give you enough information about The Great Firewall, VPN, and the internet in China so that you can feel totally comfortable with VPN the minute you land. I also talk about ExpressVPN which is the service I used for my laptop and as an app on my android (and imho the best and fastest VPN available). You'll see an Express VPN tutorial and demo, as well as my review of the service. China internet censorship doesn't have to keep you from the sites you love including Google and Facebook.
Update: This is all still relevant - the Chinese government redacted their statement about shutting down all VPN usage by 2018, so don't worry!

I'm going to China as an au pair for one year soon and I'm so glad there's videos here that are discussing on how to use VPN while in China. Do you recommend subscribing to ExpressVPN before going to China or is it still possible to access the website while already in China? imo it appears to be the best option to subscribe shortly before I leave but I just wanted to ask for other people's opinions :)

So our family of four (all 18+) are headed to China next month, do you recommend each of us having our own VPN account or can we all share? We will each have an iPhone and my wife will have her iPad. If we bring our laptops I figure they can just be tethered to the iPhones. We will probably spring for some 4G SIM cards while in China.

Wait, I'm confused. If I'm in Beijing (which I will be in 30 days) why would I use the VPN to connect in Hong Kong? Aren't our fave websites blocked there too? Wouldn't it be smarter to connect to a U.S. VPN so that I can access those websites (Google, IG, FB, etc)....?

Hi Lauren! I'm new to your channel but I'm heading over to Beijing soon! I was wondering if we have to subscribe to expressVPN overseas or can we get it in China? Also, if I were to subscribe to expressVPN for a month, does it start on the day I pay for it or can I choose when I want to start using the subscription? Thank you!

    • @LaurenWithoutFear
      @LaurenWithoutFear  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I asked Express VPN customer service and they suggest getting it while not in China "to test it for a day or two". And they said you can choose the start date by choosing when they receive payment. Once they receive payment, the service starts. They also said the normal website may not work without VPN while in China, so if it doesn't work you go here: express-links.com. Hope this helps! You can support my channel by using this link when you're ready to buy your plan: www.linkev.com/?a_aid=laurenwithoutfear I greatly appreciate your support!

It is okay to connect to Internet for China mobile SIM card via ExpressVPN. But be sure install ExpressVPN or other VPN apps before you arrive in China. Coz Google Play and many other websites you are familiar with have been blocked, can only access via VPN.

I used that VPN service while in China. If you want to watch some video provider like Crackle or anything that makes sure you're in America, you'll have to use an American VPN network through them. I chose them because they're supposed to be the fastest and most secure.

Oooo good question! If you have a smartphone, you can use Wi-Fi on it in China, and if you buy an ExpressVPN plan in advance, download the app, get it all set up, then you can definitely access your old familiar internet on your smartphone. You will not be able to make calls though, so for that you'll need to call your cell service provider to unlock your phone so you can insert a Chinese SIM card when you get to China. Does that make sense?

Wait so if I wanna study in China, can I use a VPN? Cuz technically I'll stay for more than 2 years- So (sorry if it sounds stupid lol) am I considered like a foreigner? I was born outside of China lol but both my parents are Chinese so is it "safe" to use a VPN to watch TH-cam? I don't want to get in trouble and get arrested and all 😅 So I'm kinda a bit scared but this video and the comments actually helped a bit to put me more at ease haha
Oh I just watched the rest lol- (I wrote this comment cuz I'm still a bit stressed on either using a VPN or not and weither maybe saying bye bye to TH-cam for a while 😅 but yeah as long as we don't use TH-cam annd all to spread riot footage, politics and all we're safe?)
I just finished watching this vid! I watched other vids about this but honestly, you explained it the best and I'm actually not that scared of using a VPN anymore 😅 I was initially really scared of not being able to watch TH-cam for like ever- But thank you SO much for making this vid! Helped a LOT and you explained it VERYY well!! ❤️❤️

Hello from a Chinese who is using a VPN,I think the reason why Chinese government set up a firewall is the government is not confident enough for its stable rule。The Chinese government should be confident enough。

Foreigners using VPN is not Chinese gov's target, those who provide such VPN service for Chinese citizens is their main target.

I can't say for certain because its the Chinese government, and they will do what they want, but I can tell you that as a foreigner living in China I did not feel threatened using VPN.

The craziest thing is you don't need a VPN if you're in Hong Kong, but if you're in mainland China you you definitely need a VPN..Problem is the government shuts down all VPNs at certain times of the year..Davis

You are actually wrong. The original Chinese "Facebook" is called Xiaonei (then changed its name to Renren), but after 2010 basically nobody uses it anymore. Also, those Chinese counterpart launched long before the block. Weibo came out in 2009, QQ/Tencent in 1999, and Baidu in 2000. What is more, you can access Wikipedia in all the other languages except Chinese in China without VPN.
