Gospel Patrons of Magdala | Jesus In Galilee Pt 5 | EP172

In this episode, Jesus in Galilee Pt 5: Gospel Patrons of Magdala, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray tackles the group of people that funded Jesus’s ministry. But in order to appreciate who they were, we first need to explore the wealthy city of Magdala. Even though archaeologists have only uncovered roughly 10% of the ancient site, it’s clear Magdala was a place bursting with life and luxury.
Situated on the International Coastal Highway, Magdala is unique in the land of Israel because it was home to not one, but two First Century synagogues (possibly more)! That makes it almost certain that Jesus visited and taught in the synagogues here. Magdala, which means “tower” in Aramaic, was best-known as a center for the salting of fish. Jesus no doubt had Magdala in mind (and was likely pointing to the city) when he uttered the famous words, “You are the salt of the earth.”
But what made Magdala so special wasn’t what was there, but who was there. It was the home of Mary Magdalene, a woman Jesus healed and who later became the first witness of the resurrection. She and a group of other wealthy women became Gospel Patrons who funded Jesus’s ministry. You won’t believe who else was part of the group! By the end of Jesus in Galilee Pt 5: Gospel Patrons of Magdala you’ll be inspired to be more intentional about using the gifts and resources God has given you to advance His purposes here on earth.
