  • Another all-female metal band from Japan, this song was a little more straight-forward rock than metal, but it was still tons of fun to listen to. I don't know what they put in the water in Japan, but it's sure giving these girls some serious guitar chops!

Bass player Misa can switch between pick and slap at will. She tucks the pick into her index finger. Rhythm guitarist Miku is who was playing and being shown while you were talking about the similar chord progression. I've seen them live 9 times, and drummer Akane is pretty much smiling the whole show, every show. The shows are always high energy and fun.

Great reaction. The rhythm guitarist is Miku, the founder, lyricist and heart of the band. She was not able to play the guitar in 2013 when she founded the band. Her guitar teacher is Kanami, the lead guitarist and composer of the band. The other members are Misa, the bassist, Akane on drums (always smiling) and Saiki, lead vocals.
I am not sure what song to recommend since they are all good but it depends on your personal taste. My current favourite song is "Corallium" (there is a quite good live video). Another great song is "Play" (Live). And "Dice" (MV) is a good pick, too. A great double feature is the online live performance of "Manners, Blackhole" which shows two different sides of Band Maid.

@@DadDaughtersandDrinks I am glad you enjoyed Onset. It definitely looks like you got the attention of the Band-Maid fandom (of which I am one). I also second the recommendation of the two song combo of Manners/Black Hole which they played on a livestream in 2021 during the covid lockdown. Manners is my favorite Band-Maid song but which, like Onset, they didn't play when I saw them live in Dallas. Band-Maid rotated quite a few songs in and out of the setlist during that US tour. Manners shows their old time rock influences while Black Hole leans into frenetic punk. Both songs are on their most recent full length album called Unseen World, which is in my top 10 albums of 2021 and is a masterpiece - th-cam.com/video/iaf94nNSRGE/w-d-xo.html

Welcome, Margarita Kid. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 190 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Shambles, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): th-cam.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/w-d-xo.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” th-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/w-d-xo.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html

 “P and D⁴” Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinDakaPanic810
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
 Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: th-cam.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/w-d-xo.html
     See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: th-cam.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/w-d-xo.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 The Maids SOLD OUT 2023 US & Mexico tour wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!! In addition, their Japan tour finished up with 13 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concluded at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023 and in Hong Kong Dec. 21!
The Maids are one of the hardest working super groups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids, and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE!

If you had seen Band-Maid even a couple of years before this performance, you would have seen MISA playing her 4-string Fender Jazz bass with natural Maple finish, block inlays, and a Jimi Hendrix sticker on the pick guard. She got it in high school when she switched to bass to join her senpai's band. She played in that band for five years before joining Band-Maid in 2013, and switched to 5-string basses sometime late 2015 or early 2016 because she wanted or needed the lower notes for some of Band-Maid's drop D and drop C# songs. They self describe as a hard rock band.As you noticed, they do mix styles in a song. While they have a handful of great instrumentals, the latest and greatest being From Now On, the vocal component is a key part of their "sound". And they are a live band. Their performances with an audience are another notch up in intensity from their studio or MV cuts.Current example is HATE from their 2023 Lollapalooza gig. A big step up from the studio track, for me.

Margarita Kid, I hope you react to Band Maid again. Band Maid has an excellent lead singer. I suggest your next reaction (with a daughter) be "Domination", the official live video. It really shows how well the band interacts with and commands the audience. I've been to two of their live concerts this year in the U.S. and they put on an amazing live concert. They all smile because they LOVE performing before a live audience. I'm 75 years old and have seen a lot rock bands in my life from iconic to the not so famous, and Band Maid has restored my believe that GREAT hard rock is still out there. The reason I suggest you have your daughter react to the group is because at Band Maid concerts there so many old geezers, like myself, in the audience at the rail. We need more young women to see and react to these Maids, because they are about female empowerment. They can perform as well as (and even better than many of their male counterparts). The band has recently celebrated their 10th anniversary together and have written and recorded over 120 songs (not one of them bad and most of them outstanding). Band Maid fans call ourselves Maidiacs and we are devoted, rabid, and protective of them. Akane, their drummer, is always smiling and loves to perform. As others have mentioned, their recent instrumental From Now On, is a great one. Some reactors have contended it is is straight up metal. I'm not goid on genres but it is one of those epic sounding songs that seems like it should be in a movie sound track. The live version of Play really highlight the drummer and bass. Thanks for giving BM some love. They are more hard rock at their core, but do add metal elements in a lot of their songs. They do like to mix in a lot of other styles of music in their songs, often in the same song. MISA, on bass, does usually use a pick, but is able to tuck the pick in her hand when some slapping and popping is called for. I won't recommend any particular songs, but will say that you can pick anything from their catalog of 125+ songs and it will be a solid tune. Looking forward to more BM and other Japanese bands. You get a sub from me, since you are giving some great insight into the reactions you are doing.

After listening to this band for a while, you realise that every verse in a song is a little different. They always change something and that makes you never get tired of the song. Lead guitarist Kanami, the main writer, is good at this - their music is so intelligently written and they really know how to create songs that never get boring. Another thing is that the whole band never seems to run out of ideas. They always come up with new variations on guitar and bass riffs and drum fills that have been used since the 60s and 70s. Add to this the fact that vocalist Saiki (who is taking a break during this song) has perfect pitch in her voice and you have an idea of how good this group is in my opinion. I can honestly say that this is one of my best musical finds in many years.

“It’s reminding me of something but I can’t place it.” You will say that many times in the future, my friend.
As a 57 year old blues rock musician and all around music nut, this group of maids has restored my faith in modern music.
Side note: “You Spin Me Round,” by Dead or Alive. On my 80’s play.
Also, Motörhead inspiration will make another appearance for you in Band Maid’s “No God.”
MISA MISA MISA! The Barefoot Bass Assassin. There will be plenty of commentary on her. I play bass as well, and she’s inspired me to reassess everything I learned. She began on four and moved to five when their songwriting brought in more drop tuned stuff. Plays with a pick most of the time and tucks it like a guitarist for her slap parts, or actually hybrid picks on some occasions.
Miku 🌹 founded the band as the vocalist, but replaced herself as the music got heavier and assumed the role of harmony. She also decided to be the rhythm guitarist, despite not knowing how to play. Kanami, the lead guitarist, became her teacher in 2014. Miku hastily brought her skills up enough to play for thousands around the world in short order.
From here, you would be surprised how the same musicians and the same instrumentation could create an entirely different instrumental track in “From Now On,” but they did.
If you’re ready to meet Saiki, the Ice Queen on vocals? I would recommend “DICE,” official music video
    Enjoy the ride 🚀

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

There is an interesting BAND-MAID song, if you are willing to do a double reaction. Puzzle, is about an ill-fated love, where the singer realizes she will always be the second woman. I always think the full band version sounds like Saiki, the lead singer, is throwing this in the man’s face. This is the version of her telling him what she thinks. It is loud and harsh. There is also an acoustic version, just her and the lead guitarist, that is so emotional that you don’t even need to understand the language. You just feel the pain. This always struck me as the version where she is alone and feels the loss and regret. This version is beautiful, but just so sad. The duality is striking.

Glad to see Band-Maid making an appearance on the channel! Yeah they're more like rock than metal. I'm sure all the other comments will fill you in on the details haha, but the second guitarist, Miku, is shown (her solo part is at 9:41 in your video) but not as much I guess because she is a rhythm guitarist. But she's also the secondary vocalist as well. The bassist, Misa, tucks the pick and can switch between the two styles easily. I'm pretty sure The Warning's Ale has also learnt to do this, but we don't see it often as she usually just uses her fingers.
You were expecting metal here but it wasn't really... But if you'd like to try a metal Japanese female five-piece band, it's Nemophila (I think I've recommended them to you before?). Nemophila are a newer band with a smaller following, but they're currently my favourite band! The song I'd recommend to start with is Oiran (the most recent live version) although just today they dropped a new live video of the song Raitei you could try. They usually have a mix of scream and clean vocals, but if you don't like scream vocals they have some clean only songs too.

I also don't think I've seen Ale play with a pick before, although she very well may have at some point and I haven't seen it (even though I've reacted to over 30 of their songs, they were primarily from 2 concerts, so in reality I don't have many data points to go by there.

Band-Maid is a very talented band. They are more hard rock, groove rock, alternative rock, indie rock with some R&B/jazz thrown in.
Gorilla always smiles when she plays the drums. The second guitar player is a Small Pigeon and is also the founder of the band.
Akane Hirose is the drummer and, yes she not only answers to Gorilla but she embraces the nickname given to her by her band mates.
Miku Kobato is the founder never played guitar before Band-Maid was formed. She was going to be the lead vocalist but she thought her voice didn't have enough oomf for hard rock. They brought in a lead vocalist Saiki (Sigh-key) who they nicknamed Psycho to be the lead vocalist. She is such a supportive person to the rest of the band.
The lead guitar player is Kanami Tōno and she taught her prized pupil Pigeon to play guitar. Her main influence is Carlos Santana.
Misa is an extraordinary bassist. You observed correctly she primarily uses a pick but hides it when she slaps.
This band is the most fun you could have at a concert (they call it a serving). You and your daughters must go see them when they come back to the US.
Domination is a perfect song for your daughters to see. This live version is from the same concert and allows each member to showcase their skills.

They are a hard rock band more than a metal band, This was a pretty early instrumental for the band. Their most recent one is “From Now On” which has a good video and you’ll see the other player more and can see what they’re doing a bit better. They actually have DVD’s with what they call “white room” videos that have cameras that will focus on each individual the whole time.
The 2nd guitarist only picked up guitar after she formed the band and ended up bringing on a new singer. She’s grown into a good rhythm guitarist over the years but she’s more of a chord strummer than a tapping kinda gal. Not to knock her at all, she’s also a great vocalist and is the heart of the band. So she’ll never get a ton of focus during instrumentals.

Congratulations on improving your live today by meeting Band-Maid!!
Arguably the best rock band on the planet! 🌏 Continue the journey and I'm certain you'll agree.
As we know, being an extraordinary player does not mean one is a great musician - not necessarily a creator of truly great music (looking at you Steve Vai 😂 - just kidding 😂). Whereas greats like Eric Johnson neatly always create great songs. The Maids are like EJ that way.
That’s where Band-Maid excels - creating great music regardless of any individual’s playing skill level; even when it’s quite high as lead guitar Kanami or bassist Misa clearly demonstrates here.
I think that perhaps only maybe The Beatles, Zeppelin & Rush have a body of work as Prolific; in terms of writing great song after great song; as the Maids. 120+ songs over 10 years and not a bad song among them. The consistent high level of their compositions, songwriting, arrangements, orchestration, instrumentation, playing and performance is absolutely staggering.
I haven’t been as excited about a bands music since first hearing Rush back in the seventies; that’s how high in esteem I hold the Maids.
You owe it to yourself to hear more of their music. Check out

Thanks, I appreciate the recommendations. I completely get what you're saying (and agree!) about Vai vs. EJ. My only complaint about EJ (and it's a small one), is that I just wish he wouldn't try to sing. I'd Pink Floyd in the list of prolifics as well (being my favorite band ever, I kind of have to). And it's clearly high praise to compare excitement levels to old Rush (which is my favorite Rush by far. Once they started synthing, it no longer quite clicked as hard for me. Still good, just not the same power that captured me with stuff like Bastille Day or Anthem).

@@DadDaughtersandDrinks You missed a lot at great pre-synth music - 2112, A Farewell to Kings album, La Villa Strangiato, Permanent Waves (my favorite album) and ofc Moving Pictures. There’s some synth but nothing like Signals thru Roll The Bones. They did then cut way back on Counterparts and subsequent records. Vapor Trails is a raw, angry album. I adore Snakes n Arrows; tremendous songwriting craft on that album. And the last ClockWork Angels is excellent.

Welcome to Band maid Sir.. You are going to be here for a while, so much to see and hear.. Check out Real existence Live.. It's a banger and a great live video.. The song you were thinking of was by a band called "Dead or alive" and the song was a big hit in 1985..
    Best wishes from France

Its peetty Commonwealth that Miku plays second guitar. This was the purpose why she learned to play. She had the feeling they needed an additional guitar but she didn't want to add an additional member.. Kanami writes the songs on piano/Keyboard anyway. And Misa uses a Pick if she thinks it helps. She is used to play her base part for any Instrument that needs her. And the Drummer does it as Well. They simply have 4 people on stage that can compose. Kanami only delivers the original idea. Ayanami showed the Band 8 different Variations that she could play and all other membets voted for Hell.

The one you was disappointed because they didn't show, the one playing minor part in the background, she is the one who put the band together 10 years ago lol... she is somewhat new at playing the guitar, the lead guitarist has been teaching her but she is picking it up pretty good, think she has a Zemaitis Guitar and Zemaitis use to sell, think it is still available, her own signature guitar, here is one review...

They classify themselves as Heavy Rock not Metal, however that's a little to simple of a description as they do drift in and out of a number of different genres including metal.

Band-Maid is metal-ish. Don't try to stake them to any particular rock genre, as they purposely change up genre to vary the pace and feel of their live shows. Band-Maid always writes for their live performances; they won't release a song they can't perform live. Watch Band-Maid's video for "Giovanni" to see them seamlessly change genre on the fly.. This band fearlessly experiments with their songwriting and they've had very good results.
People keep trying to Pidgeon-hole Band-Maid into a genre, but they're a Pop group metalheads can enjoy while also a being a Metal band that pop fans can enjoy.

I'm certainly not trying to pigeon-hole them; just didn't know much about them and it was metal I was listening to when the recommendations came in. I prefer more compositionally complex and cross-genre music, so I'm all for this!

The only thing I don't like about this video is how dark it is. You can't see them play through half of it🫤.

Sure, but it's the darkest live performance I've ever seen! Just kidding (kind of) Don't get me wrong - it's still great! It just could have been a tiny little bit greater maybe :-)

MISA MISA MISA!!!!! I HATE (I know a strong word) the ultra quick cuts as a side note the second guitar part you where mentioning was a backing track as the rhythm guitarist at the time was too inexperienced to play it. another side note this sounded like a hard rock song cos they are a hard rock band NOT metal tho they do have some heavy metal tropes along with punk, jazz, blues and others (Including rap)

    • @skrrytch
      @skrrytch 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes sometimes the quick cuts are annoying. Best example: "Domination" live where Misas Solos has been nearly ruined 😮 But hey, many music videos from other band never show how they play ... 🤟

      @DadDaughtersandDrinks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for the style clarification; a lot of times I don't know what I'm getting into and I falsely assume the genre of the band being recommended is the same as the genre of the video the recommendation came in.
