Making an NFC Enabled Smart Ring with Tritium and Forged Carbon Fiber

- In today's video, Patrick Adair designs a ring made out of forged carbon fiber with a groove cut into it to fit an NFC antenna. He also filled in the rest of the groove with circuit board components, glow powder, and tritium vials. The ring allows you to perform a bunch of really useful functions with your smartphone, so this is definitely one of the most functional rings that Patrick has ever made.

This would actually be a lind of cool wedding ring where when you tap it, it shows what day the anniversary is and wedding photos or plays your wedding song or something

I am an electronic engineer and watching this video and the one that you etch away some copper rings made me think that you are totally capable of making a ring with circuit board patterns. It would be awesome, I wish you do that some day.

Megaman The Second How is the title clikbait. He tells you exactly what the ring does in the title, it's NFC enabled. That means it can do anything an NFC tag can do. It can unlock your phone, store contact information, or even spoof an Amiibo. I don't understand why everyone keeps saying the title is clickbait.
Not a bad idea if he got into betavoltaics he might be able to use the tritium to power the low voltage circuit.

Put some copper coils in it and some LEDs so it lights up when you put it on a wireless charging pad.
Yeah, I also thought of something more practical than dummy components. But one step at a time.
Put the glow powder OVER some LEDs on a charging coil so the charging pad 'charges' the glow powder.

Just a thought for the glow powder next time. Do a layer of glow powder and glue in the channel first. Then turn it flat with the lathe and lay the components on top of that. That might make for a cleaner look between the components and the nfc chip.

The NFC in a card is connected to the actual chip too, you'd need to put that in the ring also.

IT Auditor here with a interest in InfoSec and home automation (OpanHab). It would be awesome to see this used as a tool for MFA, as the “something you have” component. That way control could be passed on to another if needed, unlike your fingerprint. I can imagine cool implementations of being able to link your ring to a smart lock at home, or using a virtual link in a phone’s memory to a hotel app to enable unlocking your room with it (like Marriott’s new NFC room key capabilities). So many real-world implementation options out there, I can’t wait to see what the next 3, 5, 10, and beyond years bring to the world with this type of tech literally at your fingertips.

Awesome. I always wanted to have a ring with some kind of pcb-ish design in it. Many years ago I had a dream: I'd have liked to have a ring with a chip in it (just to show, not functional or anything) with one of those early microprocessors - you know, one of those eeproms with the little window to erase them with uv light.

by far the coolest thing youve made
Next time you do something like this, you can lay the circuit board parts upside down on tape to orient them the way you want to, put adhesive on the ring mixed with glow powder, then role the tape onto the ring. then it dries, remove the tape and your golden.
Would make for a super clean finish product with half the fooling around.

On a safety though - you should never touch a lathe chuck when it's spinning. And putting your finger INSIDE it? Really - don't do it. If it catches it will rip out your entire finger along with the tendon up to your elbow and not even blow the fuse. I hope you'll leave this up - or - delete it but add your own safety message. Wouldn't want anyone to get really hurt like this.

Chris, Patrick explains elsewhere that the lathe isn't actually spinning as fast as it appears to be, he has sped up the footage to save time.

But it doesn't have to be spinning fast to snag you and before your brain has had the third of a second it needs to realise it and the rest of the time it needs to react, your finger is no longer attached. Safety levels are a personal choice we all make. But when we make videos there's a tendency to imply things are safe for others to do without ever intending to, so I think we need to be a bit more aware of the safety of others who may copy us.

They make CA glue gel and CA glue spray activator. This will solve your running issues.

Neat! I imagine you could have even two separate NFC chips on the opposite sides of the ring. The distance and finger as an insulator should be enough for only one to be picked up by the phone at a time.
