The biggest difference between Indians & Pakistanis is will. Indians had a will to succeed, Indians had a will to get away from the ignominy of going bankrupt and being forced to approach the IMF. India had a system in place for education and population control. Indias had pride in achievements of ancestors and their desired place in the world. Indians knew they had to stand on their own legs and nobody would or could help them do so in the long run. Pakistanis rely on foreign Allah, Anglo & Arabs.

India not only has IITs but a reasonably good university education system and good feeder system to the universities in the form of good secondary education in high schools (private and govt run schools). India still has a long way to go.

I cannot disagree more. I am from IITD and after spending 20 years in the US tech industry I've realized that that hype about IITs is only due to its selective nature, which is purely a demand supply play due to India's huge population and the pathetic nature of other Indian universities. Secondary education in India has nothing to be proud of, except perhaps a few elitist schools, which might be where the previous commentor comes from. Elitism is a civilizational issue in India, which will guarantee that it will never have the kind of scalable development that's needed to compete in future. What makes US and China so powerful is that they took quality education to the last student in the village, not just create a few elite institutions for a handful people and keep bloating in pride.

India's IITs and University system is pretty much the worst in terms of global rankings.
They are a lot better than Pakistan but that's a very low bar.

@@noirdezzir8424 You won my heart brother , this is a sensible ,rational and brilliant brain speaking who hit the nail absolutely on its head. But hidden behind the veil of that ‘elitist structure’ is the millenia old civilizational caste system of graded inequality and indignity of labour , which debarred the vast productive masses( aka the reservation sekking population) from education going to the extent of chopping their heads or thumbs( Ekalavya or Shambuk, although myths even myths are mirrors to some realities) or giving diktats like pouring molten lead into their ears if they learnt Sanskrit. Gautam Buddha was the first person to challenge this, he was a profound political thinker and rationalist. I personally think 75 years are too little to break its shackles. And this structure is all pervasive all over the subcontinent including the apparently eagalitarian Muslim countries of Pakistan or Bangladesh or Buddhist SriLanka , not only India and although there’s a cosmetic veneer of equality in Islam or Sikhism , the followers quickly adhered to the old ways and modes of caste based divides.Revolutionary thinking and policymaking by leaders where they phase out the dubious elitist private English medium and the public government vernacular medium is the first step to equality whereby all learning (specially science and humanities) is done only in English with emphasis on learning the mother tongue vernacular besides important aspects of regional and national culture, this would also be a permanent solution to the black clouds of language wars and the North-South divide that hover menacingly over our skies as a favourable and natural by-product once and for all. English education doesn’t produce Macaulay’s bastards , it creates liberal , rational ,free-thinking humanists!

Excellent discussion between 2 great minds on the stage. Disappointed to see that even the small room is not filled up when such distinguished speakers are there. Even after a day, I see the views are only 13K online. Is it because the student community is not aware of "The Black Hole" platform? Thanks to the technology, we are able to watch where ever around the globe.
I think one fundamental shift that needs to happen in Pakistan's elementary education system is to delink religion and education. It off course takes a generation to see the change.

Visionaries like manmohan/PV narasimha rao broke shackles of license Raj ; vajpayee continued the same reforms - finally Modi got all the tools to accelerate. We should be grateful to all such leaders. Wish that Pakistan will also change direction and priorities- Imagine how much more the region will progress. Religion is a mental model only, humanity is one. An intellectual is an intellectual and we need more of them.

I saw the same formula used by Qatar since 2004 for their Doha development, they called all the companies from UAE to establish branch offices in Doha and give work contractors to them to transform Desert into skyscraper city with high-tech facilities same used in Dubai like JLT, JBR Marina, Plam Jumeirah. simply I would say we need an expert hand to hold us and give us work. I am focusing onto IT because it does not require huge capital investment --- an office with 10-computers = 20-Lakhs with office rent of 1-Lakh per month and salary of 100K PKR for 1st year + 10% profit share to employee of 1st year of profit will lead us to work in software and app development. this would lead to open many doors for our BS in computer sciences to utilize......

Pakistan should have a good secondary education, good university system and other centers of excellence. I feel bad for some brilliant students who are in Pakistan with no opportunities. Pakistan never had a good government since it's creation and never invested in education and other reforms etc.

I am not sure why Elon Musk gets a bad rap in this discussion. His contributions towards clean energy, whether it be electric cars or solar energy products are nothing short of revolutionary, especially in the sense that electric cars like the Model3 are now mainstream and products like the power wall / solar roof are at the cutting edge of innovation. SpaceX, also, is in many ways a trailblazer in terms of both reducing the cost of space launches and improving capabilities. I think this will benefit humanity ultimately on an immense scale. Having seen many interviews of Elon Musk and hearing him speak I don’t get the impression that he is a capitalist (like say Rockefeller was) at all. He comes across as a person that wants to build world class products that benefit humans on a mass scale. His wealth is a byproduct of his success and helps fund his passions.

Pakistanis have to stand up to the army and it’s opportunistic politics of hating India. Indians have to stand up to communalism or religious appeasement. Get religion out of governance and politics should be the goal for all. We have much bigger issues and religion doesn’t help

Dear Professor, for hard sciences you need qualified teachers. We have nothing like that in Pakistan. I don’t know this gentleman went to MIT on a scholarship or not. But then he left hard sciences and went into business consultancy. Nothing wrong with it but that tells you the desi thought process. In the 80’s I know someone who went to MIT on a government scholarship. He did something in robotics ( not so sexy at the time) and came back and was working for a fertilizer factory!
