This was explained in books. He didn't go to college because he wouldn't age and they wanted to stay a few years in the same place which wouldn't be possible if everyone notice that they aren't aging. So, they will claim to be as younger as possible.

From what I remember of when I read it at like 14, some vampires will occasionally run into someone with blood that smells so good to them the need to drink it is almost drug like. But it’s like specific to that vampire. Apparently Emmet ran into someone with blood who smelled like that to him and he downed them like a kool-aid packet. So you put a permanent teen next to an actively smoking weed bud and expect him not to end up with the munchies? Nah. Not gonna work out.

I think they did a good job in the movie, considering they decided to use Bella's point of view. Even before I read the books, I always felt that in that scene there was a lot going on inside Edward's head that we couldn't understand, because we knew nothing of him at the time. So when I read his part, it made a lot more sense the restrain i saw in the movie.
