  • In this session, I cut all the binding slots. Install the binding around both the body and the peghead. Install the body point protectors, and install the fret board. For all intents and purposes the mandolin is complete after this video.

Jerry another fantastic video for us all to enjoy. Thank you. How wonderful it must be to make heirlooms of the future that will be passed down through generations to come and how amazing for the owner many years up the road to be able to see this work of art being made. You are inspiring so many of us through your videos. Danny 👍

Outstanding work! But not unexpected of you. Here's a trick for you - slice a bicycle inner tube into strips, knot them together, and use to wrap the binding/body sandwich. It pulls the binding in really tight and the glue doesn't' stick. Looking forward to the finishing vid. Thanks!

I like that you say "Split the difference between the looks and the time " . I spent 350 hours on building my first octave mandolin . Just about went crazy over my obsession to make it perfect .Perfection is fairly elusive I,m finding .

Heirloom quality art that will be cherished and handed down through generations of Mandolin Aficionados... A very nice Legacy.
I hope that the younger generation is fortunate enough to find these videos and are intelligent enough to see what is there, going on behind what they can see and hear on the video..... Maybe instead of video games, somewhere there might be a kid doing something with his hands to "create" rather than self-pacify...... Inspiration.

There are plenty of times when I look at the process and think I could do that with the right tools and a quick practice and then there are the other bits where I think, yep that is natural talent and thousands of hours experience or it all goes wrong!

What a super kind present that palm finger plain was from Harry. That should help reduce that painful looking pressure on your poor fingers when you shape the hard maple back Jerry!
It's fantastic how the binding finishes everything off and pulls everything together.
I was really curious to see how you attached the binding to the tight pointed scroll curls and you made it look easy when I know it isn't!
Can't wait to see the final finishing clip now!
    Thanks for posting Jerry.

Well well well... I need to show this video to some people who told me that C-clamps could not be welded or rewelded! I bought some C-clamps from Harbor Freight that are 8" in reach, an inch too long. Obviously, their 6" clamps are too short. I told some work friends I wanted to cut the clamps, remove an inch, and weld them back together, but they said the material (without looking at it) could not be welded, assuming all C-clamps are made of the same material. But now here you are, showing off that you can indeed weld them, or at least weld to them. Handy! Nice job!

M any modern smokless gun powders are nitro-cellulose based. Yeah, celluloid is flammable. It's also what old movie film was made of. Many people died in theater fires thanks to that stuff.
