  • This video is about Planting Paw Paw Trees. I had an excess of paw paw trees this year that I would not be able to sell at the nursery do to the Spring 2020 pandemic and lock down. Therefore, my daughter and I went out and planted them in our 30 acres of woods.
    Here are some subsequent videos on paw paws that we have made:

    Below are a few amazon links that I talked about in the video. Enjoy!

    Here is a link to purchase 5 paw paw seeds from Amazon - the link does not state anything about stratification, but it did have one remark stating that they were growing for a customer and that would not happen without stratification. Also, I'd only purchase and plant paw paw seeds in the Spring. amzn.to/3dy3AM8

    As an apprentice electrician I worked with a welder who was in his sixties. I was in my early twenties. He had made a tool just like the one you used. He told me he was making those tools every night after work and he was selling them to George White Nursery in Licking, MO. He said he couldn't make them fast enough. He allowed me to use one almost 45yrs ago to plant pine trees. Worked fantastic. He encouraged me to purchase ten acres and fill it with walnut trees for my retirement. Never got around to it. Never saw him again after that job. All I remember is his name was Jim. It is driving me crazy to know if he was the original inventor. Blast from the past to see that tool in your video.

    That's amazing, spread the pawpaw love. In Canada they are almost extinct in the wild, but fortunately in the last 5 or 10 years there has been a bigger push for native plants so they are appearing in the nurseries

    one can get bare root seedlings from the kentucky and missouri Forestry divisins for less than $1 each in bulk they go for sale sept 1 on their website. the grafted varieties are $60 or more pretty expensive for such small saplings.

    Did doing this method shock the tap roots? I have a bunch of seeds I want to grow as saplings to give away and I'm probably going to do what you did and throw them all into one pot and separate them in the fall

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does not shock the plant as long as the plant is dormant (no leaves).

    Hi i have 2, 3 year old young trees they are very lanky and i was wondering if i could prune them back to encourage new branches?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just let them be for a while. Mine sometimes grow very slowly for the first 2-4 years and then they really take off. I have never pruned them in the first 5 years.

    Great video. Thank you for sharing.
    While the paw paws were growing in the pot how often did you water them?
    My store bought paw paw trees produce a couple of pieces of fruit for the first time this year. I saved the seeds and have them in the refrigerator. Excited for the spring to try to grow my own trees from seed. I only have about 3 acres of woods, but I hope to get one or two clusters of trees going.

      The plants like moist but well drained soil. That said, they will grow around streams and river banks, so I would think they could handle short periods of wet feet. I generally water the plants when the soil is visibly dried out on the surface and is not very damp when I stick my finger in the soil.

    Can you plant them in a raised bed? I have clay soil with boulders under the ground.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, as long as there is no bottom to the raised bed. Even with boulders, the tap root will find a way around them and go deep.

    Starting collecting some pawpaws this year and prepping for stratification.
    Can you offer any tips as to Increase success rate?
    Soils used, mixtures ect.
    Thanks

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome! I generally use paper towels because it is easy and I always have them around. Many people use Pete moss and that actually works a little better, usually with no mold issues. The most important thing is to NEVER let the seeds dry out. Some people eat the pulp around the seeds and lay the seeds to the side. Then they go to stratify them hours or days later and the seeds have dried. If they dry even for a few hours, you'll lose 50% viability (according to readings I've seen). I put my seeds in a bowl of water when I'm cleaning them so I don't have to worry about the drying issue.
      I hope to have an updated video out later this year showing the process from seed to 1st years growth. I have the footage, just need to find time to edit.

      I dropped the seeds in a cup of water and noticed some floated and some sank.
      Have you experienced this ? And is it a reliable indicator of seed viability like peach and blackwalnuts ?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaekarManastorm Mine usually sink. I can't remember any floating unless there was a fair amount of pulp left on the seed.

      Very few made it through the excessively heavy deer pressure we had last year.

    • @greatescapefarms

      We have other videos on our channel on how to protect plants from deer. Because we did so many out in the wild, we just tried to beat the deer with quantity.

      I did a walk through a couple of weeks ago and did not find any :( We have a lot of deer pressure and I'm guessing they had a pawpaw party right after I put them in the ground.

      I looked a few months after planting them and there were several I could find that were doing well. Most were hidden in deep grass, so I couldn't even find them. I have not been back in that area for a year or so. I forgot all about them. Thanks for the reminder. Once the other pawpaws leaf out I'll take a stroll back in the woods and see what the status is.
