  • Transplanting and Potting Paw Paw Trees shows how I transplant 1+ year paw paws grown from seeds into their own pots. After they are in their own tree pots, I keep them in a partially shady area before selling them at year two. At and after year two they can take being planted in full sun. Here is a link to an awesome book "For the Love of Paw Paws: A Mini Manual for Growing and Caring for Paw Paws--From Seed to Table" that gives the best details I've seen anywhere on Paw Paw plants and fruit: amzn.to/3oXxq26

I bought some potted ones last week. They are 2 years old. Best to plant now or spring in Tenn.

Plant them now. The best to to plant almost any plant is when they are dormant.

Could you share a link to the tall narrow starter tree pots you are using here? I need to do the same thing to some pawpaws and persimmons

Here is my supplier. Please note that you will have to customize your order - there are various different height pots. www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/plant-pots/treepots?dfw_tracker=43186-CN-SS-TP&adpos=&scid=scplpCN-SS-TP&sc_intid=CN-SS-TP&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw_H-BRD-ARIsALQE_2OEL-ccVbREOdXGiL6Y_kBxDtzGtk_yn7mLr_qSTu_Y0EBTr1CB4WQaAoAcEALw_wcB

Hi Todd! I started some PawPaws from seed and they are in pots about 5-6 inches with 4-5 leaves. I’m confused if I should plant them in the ground now (fall) or keep them inside and wait till spring ? Thanks in advance!

Hi Todd. We have a few PawPaw seedlings this spring, 1 and 2 yr olds. When do you recommend transplanting them directly into the garden/yard? Can they tolerate some cold, light frosts after planting? Or should we wait until after the impending cold weather next weekend? Thank you

Are they dormant? Dormant meaning that there are no leaves on them. If they are dormant then yes, go ahead and plant them as soon as the ground is workable. If they do have leaves on them and they were never allowed to go dormant then you may want to hold off until after your last frost date.

Question I have about 15 Paw Paw trees in individual pots should I keep them in shade cloth all winter. Or should I move them to the south side of my house dig a hole and bury them. Or will they survive the winter just fine. And if I do do that should I wait for the leaves to fall off and when they turn dormant

I usually like to put plants in the ground as soon as possible. If that is not possible due to the area not being ready or an upcoming move, I understand the need to keep them in pots. If they are in pots, they can be in full sun during the winter because the leaves will be off. As for your question about burying the pots - well that depends. When I lived in MD (USDA hardiness zone 7) I overwintered pawpaws in the pots above ground many times and they did fine. I moved to WV (USDA hardiness zone 6) and I lost all of my nursery stock pawpaws that were in pots. The issue is the roots are not protected as much in pots as they are in the ground, so they are more susceptible to dying from extreme cold.

How did you get them originally? Im not having any luck transplanting the ones that are *suckers* (the new ones that pop up from the adult's root)

When are you transplanting them? If they have leaves on them and you are cutting suckers out the success rate would be extremely low unless you chopped a lot of the root from the mother plant. You would have better success by transplanting them when they are dormant - late fall, winter or early spring.

Hello. I really enjoyed your pawpaw transplanting video and noticed you said you were going to sell them in WV. Are you still selling them in WV? And if you are, how much for the seedlings? I also live in WV and we have grown a couple from seeds, but looking to get a few more started on our little piece of Almost Heaven. Thank you

@@user-re7hf4xl3i They are seedlings from named varieties. They will not be exact clones of the named variety parents, but they will likely keep many of the favorable characteristics. Seedlings of named varieties are generally called "Select".
