Yeah bro ,it rarely happens at the wharf except for fuelling ,water, groceries, this one time at the wharf it was blowing so bad dogs were being blown off their chains and I was waiting for something to happen then the blow subsided but nothing happened, that was the only onetime that something could have happened in here but it didn’t happen so I’ll have to wait for it to happen again out there.

He'll of a story with a great outcome. You now have way more in depth experience-based knowledge of your own engine. With that comes recognition of what that thing wants in advance to stay happy and we'll fed b4 the hunger and slow hard working demise sets in on its way to total unexpected collapse.
Buying a new engine is great for as long as the maintenance is ahead of failure which needs to start from day one. . Preemptive maintenance with an older engine is allways cheaper and more satisfying than buying whole new ones. The hands on willingness by the owner to intimately know his own engine comes with the bonus of creating a healing effect on that noisy smelly fabulous metalic lovable little freind and the sweet music it makes going uphill thru the pass. Its similar to the loving way you feel about Alberg 30s and Triatia in particular. Lots of love to you both beautiful souls. Mark from NZ.... spiritual classic auto marine mechanic and Kelly Peterson 46 owner in Whangarei hungry to start the off shore life at age 74. (I saw Triatea in the town basin without knowing u had gone to Greenland... would have loved to had met you)

Many months ago I saw your solar panels mounted outboard port and starboard on your 30-footer. It's a great solution for a small boat. I've done something similar by mounting 2 200-watt rigid Renogy panels on my Pearson 303. It was quite an effort to find mounts for them as there were only 2 places in the U.S. that sold them. The result is beautiful. It keeps both 200AH LiFeP2O4 batteries topped off. Thank you for displaying this mounting method. 🎉

100% agree James with your decision making process about going down the route of sorting out your existing engine vrs replacing with a new one. It makes logical and especially financial sense.
In my own situation, I am extremely grateful that the previous owner of my boat though did replace it with a new one (we only have approx 160 hrs on the clock, even though we have been sailing on the boat for around 3 years since), as there is no way I could have afforded to replace the engine.
Dave sounds like he is not only honest but knows his stuff. Such a shame that JB over in Opua didn’t do the right thing by you in the first place.
Thanks also for explaining the diagnostic process you went through as this I am sure is helpful to all of us with older cruising boats with diesel engines, and especially if one doesn’t know too much about such engines.
At least now you can look forwards to your ongoing adventures. Cheers Dave

  • @justme.9711

I'm 61 I've had several yachts My current is a 43' centre cockpit ketch. Not if, but when the motor needs serious stuff done to it, it's in a huge DEEP hole. Even if I had a 17 year old back, it'd be hell. I saw a cat with outboards and I know they're a thief magnet, but protection etc can be made/added. The ability to stand the SOB up and have all that access etc and 4 stroke is cool. This engine option has dictated my next vessel, cause as we all know, with boats and maintenance, IT AIN'T IF, IT'S WHEN!!! and the stress/issues/NIGHTMARE realities of and engine failure, and on a mid sized cat with two, Ya' gotta' spare.

Dear James. You are absolutely Right in your Problem Solving. Sofa Sailors never understand, how it is with living with a very limited Budget. That will DICTATE always the course of ones actions. I LOVE how your Girlfriend is always touching you, reassuring you, supporting you. I am close to leave with my 33ft Sailboat Dpain, heading towards Vancouver Island myselves.

When having to bleed the engine in the future, skip bleeding the injectors. It’s not necessary on Yanmar GM series. Only the filter and injection pump need bleeding. Bleed the injectors when diagnosing fuel delivery problems, sure. I have a 3GM30f and have done this numerous times. Nice to save that messy step!

Your comments at the end hit home with me. We bought a “ new to us” boat last fall. Early retirement, fixed budget, headed for the Bahamas. Head gasket failure, engine flooded. I had the opportunity to get work this summer so we chose to bite the bullet, work and have a new Betamarine installed. As you said, fixed budget , we didn’t want to take on any debt for this, so plans on hold for a year and back to work. Once we accepted that a new Beat made more sense than rebuild, and that it just meant a delay in our plans, we thought about how lucky the timing was. We were in a great location to have the repower done. This could have happened in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of a tricky channel at night. Anyway, great to hear you are on your way again. These situations also put relationships to the test, looks like you both survived!

I had a similar issue once that was hard to diagnose on my boat motor. Like you I found that while it was traumatic its amazing how many side issues got sorted at the same time, for me it was completely renovated fuel system from hose clips to injectors, renovated cooling system including heat exchanger and both pumps etc etc. Then in my case discovered it was all down to a simple cheap fix (exhaust elbow was blocked). Some clouds do have silver linings, motor was never better after the trauma settled.

Great story and glad to see you got it fixed. We recently had a head gasket blow on our old Volvo Penta, fortunately no other damage so a straightforward repair. But like you say, it takes a while to get your confidence back with the engine. Fingers crossed for yours.

Pleased worked out for you both. Acceptance of the “realities of cruising” seems to be the best approach to keep it all in perspective and keep going. Hoping you enjoyed your time in my home town Brisbane recently. Was stoked to spot the Good Ship T on the hook in the Brisbane River one weekend whilst out riding. Fair winds.

I didn't like the way it sounded before, just got a feeling but I knew it was going to blow so could be something in my head. I really like the way it sounds now. Saw a little smoke on the last startup but probably normal . That said, I picked up on some things you should be aware of that are unrelated to this failure but will probably cause you serious grief in the future if you can't figure them out. If your engine is starved of fuel either by a poor lift pump or a filter problem (growing crap for instance) and the pressure of the fuel delivered to your high pressure pump is low, that pump can be damaged. This is why a lot of diesels have a fuel pressure gauge between the high pressure pump and the lift pump. In some Cummins products it was a serious problem (bigger engines) and it cost a ton for a bunch of people. Everything from Dodge trucks to Busses and fire engines were dead in the street. The high pressure pump blew from being fuel starved and since its lubricated by diesel fuel, BOOM !

I have seen a pretty good top end rebuild done at anchor. BUT, they had a mechanic who showed them EXACTLY what to do and how to do it ON CAMERA ! The Mechanic was amazing and did many things other than work on engines. He does boat tours with his huge steel boat which he built. It was in the Caribbean.
