bought my 2000 excursion with 420,000 on clock and bad trans from a old guy who drove long haul to visit his kids a lot. trans gave out so he parked it thinking of getting trans replaced. never did so he sold it to me. i put in a used trans out of another f250 I bought with it and been driving it for 80,000 miles now. replaced vac lines and about to replace plugs and coils. nothing else and runs flawless. it was quieter than my 2002 f250 i bought new with a 5.4. I get 12-13 around town and 16-16.5 on the highway and 11.5 towing my 23' boat. just came back from a vacation run of 500 miles and averaged 14.5 town and running 75 most of the time. before anyone calls bs, cut the ford muffler off and replace with a flow master or equivalent and a k&n. DONT cut off the cat though or you will definitely lose your milage gains.

My dad's got one, a 99 he bought new. It's been solid reliable living its whole life pulling 10-12k lbs. Doesn't tow as fast as a diesel, but has alot less upkeep costs. Fuel economy isn't bad. 8-10 towing, 14-16 unloaded. It blew its 1st plug last year, but still pulled 10k and got us home on 9cyl. They are a fantastic alternative to a diesel especially these days how expensive and complicated diesels have become.

Another channel did a 6.8 excursion vs 8.1 suburban 2500 and both got 13.4 and 13.5mph after 100 miles.
They made the 6.8 for 20 years because it was amazing in fact they still use them for school busses and large generators because they are extremely reliable with good maintenance. My f350 6.8 is sitting at 478,000 miles and I haven't had to open up the engine. My biggest problem has been old sensors and exhaust manifold bolts breaking. I already rethreaded for a larger size bolt and that has fixed the issue thus far.
Its been the most reliable vehicle ive owned and has never left me stranded, i bought it at 211k miles for $900 it had been sitting since the owner passed away and his son was a cheby guy and disnt want it.
Change the oile every 7-10k miles at least clean the spark plugs around the same time torque the plugs to 20-21ft/lbs and just do your maintenance and they'll go on for a long time. At 500k miles im gonan do a rebuild and do some upgrades to help it keep up. I will never get rid of this truck until the fram rusts away.

The reason most people hate the 6.8L V-10 is because they don't perform regular maintenance and bitch and moan when something goes wrong and they assume that the engine is a bad engine...
FORD V-10 is a great reliable engine as long as you maintain it

Yepp, generally true about all engines out there with the exception of the few that are built with inherent flaws. The V10 is a great engine, I generally prefer a pre-emissions diesel myself, but these things will last near as long as a diesel when properly maintained.

  • @paulanderson388

I agree with some of your observations regarding the problem areas of the V-10 engines. That said, many of the issues can be improved by better maintenance. Many of these engines are used in heavy duty towing applications and can benefit from frequent fleet schedule (3000 mile) oil change intervals rather than the 5000 mile intervals suggested. (Oil is cheap compared to engine replacement). The cams and cam chain components will live much happier lives with clean oil. I would disagree with your opinion on the mileage numbers. Unless you have your right on the floorboard all the time, I find that these engines can achieve decent mileage in everyday use. I normally get 11.5 to 13MPG around town and slightly better on the highway when not towing. Towing a 6000 lb. trailer it drops down to 8-10 depending how much climbing is needed. That is very good compared to the 460 V8 truck it replaced which could never reach 10 MPG empty or better than 6.5 towing. The V-10 is a better engine for towing. Based on what is available in the truck market today, I will keep my 2001 F-350 4WD until it turns to dust.

What’s some of the problems you’ve had with your motor

    • @paulanderson388
      @paulanderson388 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@thebear6751 Other than maintenance, (3000 mi. oil changes), belts, filters, etc. I have had no problems whatsoever. I changed the factory spark plugs at 110,000miles- all were worn but tight in the head. I recently returned from a 200 mile trip (not towing anything) and averaged 13.5 MPG which included mountainous regions. My son has an almost identical 2001 F-250 V-10 truck with 320,000 miles on it with no major problems. We had to replace the radiator due to a plastic tank splitting so we replaced the water pump and hoses just because they were old. I am very pleased with the performance of these V-10 engines. After doing research it seems the unfortunate spark plug blow-out problem is caused by the factory by not putting enough threads in the head, and also by the factory issuing a 13 ft lb. torque spec. on the plugs that is not sufficient to keep them tight. When they loosen, it causes cylinder pressure to blow past the threads eventually damaging those threads and launching the plug. If you torque the plugs to 20-26 ft lbs. and do NOT use any anti seize.it is highly unlikely you will experience plug failures. One guy ( I think it was on TH-cam) took a pair of old heads and tried to see how much torque it took to strip the good threads out of the head. He couldn't do it as the spark plugs kept breaking at about 100 ft lbs.

@@motormouth2472I have a 1999 crew cab. If you live where they use salt these trucks rust out the rocker panels at the bottom of the doors, and the cab corners. If it was equipped with the nerf bar steps they too will rust out. I was looking at repairing mine but I may be doing a cab swap instead due to rust. Otherwise I personally have owned 4 superduty trucks and the chassis has never given me a moments problem. Make sure the frames not rusty, around here the rust is the main issue. As for a triton v10 the only issue I’ve had was blowing a spark plug going through the mountains with a fifth wheel camper and speed boat on the back. After that me and my dad swapped in a 2003 engine. No problems since but it’s rough looking until I do the cab swap.

Bought my '01 used with 117K on the clock. Had the plugs replaced at the dealership, never been an issue. Over a decade later and 165K no issues with the drivetrain. I've got the heaviest truck you could get outside a dually, I get 11MPG in mostly city driving and about 13 highway only. Best tank I've ever gotten was a flat stretch of highway where I cruised at 60MPH with a tailwind, and got 16MPG. Never touched that mileage again, it's consistently been 11-13 MPG. This truck seems to have about as much torque as either of the Cummins trucks I owned in the past. Had 2 coil packs go bad, I replaced them myself. Original transmission and it shifts fine. It's powerful enough to stomp on the gas and burn rubber on dry pavement even with brand new tires. Worst thing I could say about the V10 is the gas mileage. Of course the modern choked-down diesels aren't doing much better and cost more per mile to operate.

I make it a point to make sure to check oil level every 3rd fill up and usually have to add about 2 quarts between a 5000-mile oil change. Also as mentioned the V10 gets terrible gas mileage, but I only use the truck to pull a travel trailer 3 times a year, and on weekends going to adnd from the hardware store.

    Sir,
The 5.4L Triton V8 does not share the same timing chain set up as the 6.8L Triton V10.
The 5.4L Triton V8 utilizes the Variable Valve Timing using cam phasers with their timing chain set up.
The 2005 and up 6.8L V10 uses a variable length intake runner intake manifold to offset the loss of the VVT Cam Phaser set up.
None of the 6.8L Triton V10s ever used a VVT Cam Phaser timing system.
It is Cam Phaser wear and failure that will jack up the 5.4L V8. Poor engine maintenance will exacerbate premature VVT Cam Phaser failure. Regardless, eventually, the Cam Phasers will wear out and need to be replaced with improved Cam Phasers from Ford. Never install aftermarket Cam Phasers. They’re junk.
The 4.6L V8, 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10 do have one thing in common with each other. Behind the timing chain cover on the driver’s side of the engine. Is a small oil return plate that sends oil to the other side of the engine. This can, over time, leak. This reduces pressure to the timing chain tensioners, the tensioners allow the timing chain to slap the tensioners thereby eventually breaking the slippers or tensioners.
So far, my ‘05 Lincoln Town Car with the two valve 4.6L V8 has 197,500 trouble free miles
My ‘06 F250XLT withe the 6.8L V10 and German ZF6 six speed manual trans has 165,000 trouble free miles. Yes, the exhaust manifold studs are junk and need to be replaced in ye old V10.
Anyway, great channel! Keep up the good work.

I'm in Massachusetts but I take my iron beast to northern New Hampshire a lot in the Winter her we will get negative wind chill but usually our coldest days are 0-10°
And that's when this started this winter doing it. When I'm up in northern New Hampshire I've been in the bush negative 20 and she always fired up. So once this started happening I haven't gone to back country. But finally I diagnosed it. It had a tiny bad spot on the armature bar I think it's called so it was Russian roulette if it stopped in that one spot it wouldn't start. And I fiqured it out with my rubber mallet lol like you said, I was cold pissed needed to plow and it wouldn't start so I keep a mallet under my seat because I run a Fisher minute mount 2 and some times I have to set the pins the last half an inch. But she is all fixed now. Now all I need is to find a short bed since I have king ranch super crew, some DUI clipped my truck fucked up my bumper and the impact combined with the weight of my toolbox factory bed rail collapsed so now I don't look as professional for jobs as I fight this insureence. They want to total my truck over a bumper and bed rail. I won't let them if I have to I'll go flat bed not sure how it will look with an extended cab though

I'm looking to buy a decent gas-powered older class A motorhome over the next few months. I've of course been absorbing TH-cam videos to gain as much knowledge as I can regarding engine options and the pros and cons of each. The three flavors that stand out are the Ford 460, the chevy 454 and the Ford Triton V10. The reputations so far for the Ford 460 and the Chevy 454 seem to be favorable. The V10 is much more, shall we say, spotty. Case in point, and one not mentioned in your video:
A TH-cam video from about 4 years ago described a Class A motorhome with the Ford V10 that was making a knocking noise. This engine had around 65,000 miles on it. After a couple of mis-diagnosis incidences (valve train, exhaust manifold gasket) it was found that the cylinder #7 fuel injector was malfunctioning and pouring excessive fuel into that cylinder. The tear-down revealed that this excessive fuel had been washing the oil from the rings and cylinder walls, causing the piston skirt to score both itself and the cylinder wall and the piston to slap - which was the source of the knocking sound. Several thousand dollars later the engine was rebuilt by a reputable Phoenix-area shop.
I vaguely recall another TH-camr mechanic (car wizard) strongly recommending avoiding these engines as well as the Triton V8s. While most engines have their pros, cons and gotchas, with everything I've uncovered thus far about this particular powerplant I've decided to avoid the V10 like plutonium.

It always amazes me when the subject of fuel economy comes up with gas trucks, its a simple fact that nox emissions are combated in two was EGR and rich mixtures to reduce combustion temperatures and in general piston and exhaust valve temperatures by the ability of the unburnt fuel being able to remove some temperature and making engines more durable under heavy towing and high load conditions, manufacturers program for worst case scenario as no one knows which truck will be used by whom for what at what frequency !

I think a lot of times it's just easier to build something from the ground up rather than try to reengineer. 7.5 V8 was a good engine but was antiquated and manufacturers were moving to smaller engines for weight and fuel economy reasons.

    • @prevost8686
      @prevost8686 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The 7.5 wasn’t a powerhouse when you consider the poor fuel economy. It was so inefficient and was horrible as far as emissions. Engines are essentially air pumps. The more air that you can move the more power you can make. The Triton engines were much more efficient at moving air. Thanks to the deep skirted cross bolted blocks the 6.8 was also much smoother and quieter.

As others mentioned, emissions. But Ford still needed a large gasoline truck engine for that specific market. They couldn't resize the modular V8's any more as the 5.4 was about as big as they could get, so they just bolted another two cylinders to the motor and had a big-enough engine to do the job

Where were you with this video 3 years ago? My 1999 F350 was driving almost fine, it developed a random misfire. But, the real pisser happened at 143k miles the F'en timing chain on the passenger side broke. It's a truck and Fords used to be reliable, I couldn't afford the diesel so I got the gasser. So let down by Ford, big time. I really should have known better, after all, who in their right mind would put an OHC engine into a truck? That alone should have pushed me away from Ford. But I bought it anyway. At the end of your video you said these were overall pretty reliable engines. No they were not, blowing plugs, burning valve, exhaust leaks, timing chain failures, etc. And if a chain failed it does valve damage. If you truly want a reliable engine you buy the Chevy with the 6.0l engine. Those were great trucks all the way around.

So when i bought a truck labelled "Super Duty", that's kind of what i expected. Instead at only 143k the engine became a boat anchor. All my Chevy friends cruised right past 300k with their trucks. But in the bright side, I didn't buy a Dodge. The friends that bought Dodges didnt even make it to 100k.

I just wanted to let you know that youre completely butchering and blending the spark plug issues
Also the 05-08 3v motors also had spark plug issues in the 3v form (btw the E series and bare chassis motors were almost always 2v up to 2019 where all F series v10's after 2005 were of the 3v design.
So thr plug issues. The early 97-02 motors had a HEAD CASTING issue. The spark plug as fine, but someone goofed up and tapered the plug holes too much meaning while the plug had like 11 threads on it, there were only about 4 threads in the head. They fixed this issue in mid 2002 and it was great. Some people would overtorque the 4 thread heads leading to weakening of the threads that would cause a blowout (if they didn't just pull the threads while tightening), others would under-tighten the plugs causing the plugs to come loose while the engine was running and rattle and rip the threads out, leading to a blowout.
Then in 2005 they came out with the 3v, like 14 threads right? But they made the plug 2 pieces pressed together and thwy had a long stem that would press into the head below the threads and help seal. This long stem would sieze, and then the threaded part would come out and leave the cores inside, or the core would twist in half. Quite a fun time, and then you had some people over tighten these and the cores would shoot out and leave the threaded sections fully intact. Then in 2008 they moved to a 1-piece spark plug and from them on the only issues were sludge buildup and the plugs being tight enough to break cheap ratchets on by the time their change interval came.
Thank you for atte ding my ted talk. I will see myself out.
Edit: so the timing chain issue.
They used plastictensiomers from somewhere around 2003 to about 2008/2009, before and after that time period they used cast iron chain tensioners. The plastic chain tensioners would crack and fail early, the cas iron tensioners would survive as long as you kept up with your oil changes for the most part.
Also plastic guides suck but many other families of engines also use plastic chain guides. Also the v10s frequently got iron tensioners even through the plastic tensioner era because they were known to be a heavier duty application. The v8's had more chain issues and also the 3v v8's got VCT systems (that sucked balls) and the v10 never got those that i'm aware of.
