Anyone know the answer to this question? At 1:25, you see Gronk catch the ball, the defender fail to touch him and then other defenders fail to tackle him or get him out of bounds. Washington challenged the play and lost. My question is this: Can a team really challenge two different things on the same play? Can they really say, "We think our defender touched Gronk down and even if he didn't, we think Gronk stepped out of bounds later in the play." That seems to be challenging two aspects of the same play.

Daniel Crane I believe, technically, they are challenging where the ref calls the ball down. In this case the ball is called "down" at about 10 yards, and then they have to investigate anywhere else it could have been "down" in the play.
thedarkemissary--That seems reasonable. What about a situation where an offensive player fumbles the ball and a defensive player picks it up and runs with it. Then the defensive player fumbles the ball and the offense recovers. Suppose the ref says the offense fumbled the ball and the defensive player was down before he fumbled--awarding possession to the defensive team. Could the offensive team challenge and have the ref review both fumbles? Would they have to challenge "possession of the ball" or something to get the refs to look at both? Or do they have to point to one specific fumble on the play to challenge?
Daniel Crane Typically if a fumble is "questionable" the refs blow the whistle. If not, then it's pretty clear and the team usually doesn't challenge less they lose a timeout. As far as I know, all "change of possessions" are now subject to review.
