In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about history of Tea. According to legend, in 2732 B.C. Emperor Shen Nung discovered tea when leaves from a wild tree blew into his pot of boiling water. In 1610 Portugal and Dutch traders introduced Europe to Tea and in 1662 Tea reached the royal palace of Britain. Initially China was the only Exported of tea in world. In 1838 tensions arose due to Britain's Opium trade in China and it resulted in the Opium wars between China and Westen Countries. Tea also played an important role in American Revolution. Due to tax levied on Tea American revolted against the Monopoly of British east India company resulting into an event known as Boston Tea party when 343 chests of Tea were thrown into Tea by American revolutionaries.
Due to Tensions with China Britishers started a tea production in Assam. In 1839 Assam Tea company was established and tea from Assam reached Britain and overtook the Chinese tea. What is Boston Tea party?

Earlier tea was called "phanap" by local Singhpho tribe of Assam residing at Sadia, Assam-Arunachal border. Bisa Gam was Singhpho king when Robert Bruce visited Sadia. Maniram Dewan cultivated tea for the first time at Chabua (Chah-bua) of present day Dibrugarh district of Assam.

Baruah is an Assamese title assigned by Ahom kings according to administrative workds during Ahom rule, in similar fashion with other Assamese titles like Saikia, Borah, Duwori, Hazarika, Phukan, Borphukan, Borgohain, Buragohain, Kotoki etc. Several main land Indian settled at Assam during Ahom rule because of various reasons (primarily war) & mingled with locals who lateron became an integral part of Assamese society.
