    I’m am not downsizing or decluttering for my move to Mexico. I am PURGING. I won’t be doing storage or shipping huge items. The things I have now in my nyc apartment have served me for years, and now it’s time to let them go. ❤

      Purging, yes! We love to hear it 👏🏼 I have a section with advice about downsizing/purging in the new Move to Mexico QuickStart Guide (link in the description) 😃

  • @Mexicobeanpole
    @Mexicobeanpole ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Don’t. We moved to Mexico twice from the US.
    The first time we paid $8k to bring our stuff. We were temporary residents. This was in 2006.
    Family obligations sent us back to the US and now we’re back for retirement and we came with mostly our clothes, medications, and extremely sentimental small items. And pet stuff. It all fit in a car.
    We regret the hassle and the money it cost to bring a household full of stuff. If we had it to do again, we would have sold, donated or given to family everything in our house except for clothes, jewelry and valuables and just went on a $8k shopping spree once we were in Mexico.
    Honestly, we put to much value on “stuff”.
    Everything is replaceable except for the 4 living creatures in our car. 🐕🐈‍⬛
    Edit: a $3k shopping spree would have been plenty.

      Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! I get a lot of questions about how to ship belongings to Mexico, so I wanted to create a video to address them, but I agree with you. It’s very costly to ship, but it’s not relatively easy/cost-effective to furnish a home in Mexico 🇲🇽

    • @Mexicobeanpole
      @Mexicobeanpole ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The furniture, linens, household goods, artwork etc that I had in a 4 bedroom 3 bath beach home in Florida either didn’t fit in our small 2/2 house in Chapala or were just not matching in style.
      Buying handmade furniture in Mexico is very affordable.
      If you’re looking for something out of a magazine and going to Liverpool in Guadalajara you’re going to spend a FORTUNE.
      If you buy as you go and shop on your local Facebook ads, you can get steals.
      You wouldn’t believe the deals I got doing this.
      But then, I’m retired and have the time to do this.
      No one needs to ship a table or a frying pan to Mexico.
      It makes zero sense.

    If it helps anyone, when I moved to Mexico for the first time, I brought two large unpopened containers of vitamin C and Zinc suppliments, stuff I use to protect myself from COVID, i stored them in my checked baggage and only had to pay an import fee for my custom PC desktop because I didnt know I needed to show receipts as proof of ownership. Customs told me that they wont even check for that same kind of receipt if it is a laptop and laptops you can bring in a carryon. The international airport in Mexico city is where i went through customs before traveling to Guadalajara as my final destination. Hope sharing this helps someone save some money.

    • @P38Z350
      @P38Z350 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Did you ship your desktop PC in your checked luggage? I will need to take my Alienware desktop with me to Mexico and I’m afraid i’ll have issues with customs

    • @GringoPicante
      @GringoPicante 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@P38Z350 I can't tell you exactly how to do it right but I can tell you how I did it wrong lol. I wanted to put my desktop in my carryon but it was too big. So I dismantled my pc, wrapped every pc part in bubble wrap for protection and decided to purchase a new case once I was in Mexico and then put it back together. What I did WRONG is that I did not bring a reciept proving that I purchased this PC so I had to pay a fine. After that I was good to go. So from what the customs worker explained to me, if you got a laptop or a desktop, doesn't matter if it is in carryon, back back or checked luggage, bring a receipt as proof of purchase. That way they know you are not bringing it to Mexico to sell it. It's something they do to protect their economy as they have a growing electronics economy that they want to protect. Hope that helps.

    Wow! It sounds like a pain in the butt to move things from the US to Mexico! Probably cheaper to just buy new things! My husband was able to bring his supplements when we drove to Mexico. They quickly “searched” our car at the border not thoroughly and just wanted to know if we had gone shopping and if the items were ours 😅

      If you're transporting items in your personal vehicle, you shouldn't need to go through the consulate, but I recommend having an inventory list of everything in your truck (translated).

    What sort of prohibitions on shipped items do Mexican nationals have when returning to Mexico?

    • @alex-wittman
      @alex-wittman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mexican citizens must get a notarized inventory list (menaje de casa) from a Mexican consulate. They have a six-month window during which to import their items.

      Yes, you can. It will cost you. The person packing and moving the items will be super important. Even with a great mover, expect some damage. It’s just a fact of life. Even in a U.S. move.
