Choose wisely. I have a policy from a US company that is horrific. It was emergency surgery and was covered according to the policy. They told the doctor I wasn’t covered. I had to pay $20,000+ USD in order to leave. It took six months after denial after denial until they paid me minus what they considered an overcharge plus the deductible . If that surgery was done in the states it would have been at least quadruple.

Healthcare and laws works different in Mexico and the USA. In the USA, they bill you later because there are laws the help hospitals/Health providers to enforce payments. Also, not paying a bill in the US can impact a person's credit score. In Mexico, lawsuits are very rare and collections agencies they usually will call the person trying to get back their money but that's it.

In other words, if you can't pay then no service. The medical system (just like the school system) shouldn't be privatized. Our healthcare system in the US runs at 20% of GDP. But did you look up the worldwide ranking? So many people get their insurance subsidized and we massively protect the market to keep prices high. In a single payer you could lower the prices significantly. But to be fair, in all other countries nurses rent apartments and don't drive around in a Mercedes.

hey i know this may not be the right video to post this comment under but since i watch your channel i thought id let you know. theres gonna be alot of people in the next 4 years who will suddenly end up starting from zero in their later years due to the new administration in the states. those people will understandibly be very upset and if and when they bump into americans living in mexico i cant imagine they *wont* feel some kind of way about having to share living space with the same group of people barring them from the country they came from while living their best life in theirs. its a natural sentiment. so if i where you id start planning on heading back home in the next 4 years, the goverment in mexico may not act on this resentment but i know those folks likely will so id be aware of this and plan ahead.

The best don't take insurance and we cover all the hospital or private care clinic (rented service space) costs so the patients pay us upfront. Yes in advance with extra on retainer (like a good lawyer). Of course any over payment is used to cover follow up visits, home visits, and YES, here we make house calls and hotel calls, only politicians and actors get that care in the USA..... Here, your doctor has many options to be able to help. Especially in cash situations. Sometimes your general practitioner will find the specialist and handle all the details. Here we have many "medical tourists". Medical tourism is a booming market. Dental surgery, bariatric surgery, all taken care of by the GP. Pick up the patient at the airport, surgery, hotel, recover on the beach, transport back to the airport. Many services that not offered in the USA. Plus, here, most medications generally cost less than most Americans Co-pays. And the majority of medications don't require a prescription. Very important note -- here after surgery, most patients are not going to get narcotics (Vicodin, oxycodone, demerol, percocet and items generally provided in the USA). Generally you get anti-inflammatory products. Many Americans complain about pain and push for narcotics. We have it, just not going to find it at most Mexico pharmacies. Hope some of that is helpful. Possible future video for you.

You shared very important info about pain medication. Recovering from a serious major surgery or dying from cancer can be incredibly painful and I think this needs to be shared more widely. If in fact, there is no pain medication for truly severe pain, that will factor in for a lot of people. It seems inhumane if someone is dying or recovering from major surgery and is going to be in excruciating pain. And don't think this comment is from someone who abuses any meds. I've never had a narcotic, never used an illegal drug, and I'm going to be 65 next week. But I don't intend to die in agony.

@SharrellKline I didn't say there are "no", pain meds. Just saying, in general, they are not used as freely as in the USA. Many doctors here have been threatened with their careers. Many have lost their careers and others have been placed in jail. The "average" doctor will not write a prescription for these meds and you will not find them at the local pharmacy. You will have to go to the hospital pharmacy and a few (very few) specialty pharmacies. Drugs, cartels, fake prescriptions, politics, corruption, and changes in laws have all made these items difficult to obtain, not impossible but yes difficult. In the USA, we gave out morphine like candy. We gave out enough opioids to create a "crisis". Here the average doctor will not do it for fear of their career. They will call in a specialist or if you are in a hospital, they will have to get permission from the attending. You can't just say you have pain and expect pain meds. I've been working here for years. Go talk to other doctors here. They will tell you the same. Go get a root canal and they will give you paracetamol (Tylenol), sometimes another analgesic, sometimes a NSAID (ibuprofen, ketorolaco, naproxeno). When you complain, they will tell you to take both together. We are not allowed to sell muscle relaxers (solo, they have to be in a mixed pill) and we are not allowed to sell Sudafed!!! Have a cesarean section today, sent home in the morning, Tylenol and ibuprofen. Have a super bad migraine, you will get an antidepressant faster than some form of narcotic meds. Just like if we give out Tramadol, it is generally in a mixed tablet with paracetamol. Please check. Don't take my word. These are just a few examples. This is why it is critical to pick the right doctor. Worry about the doctor first and then they will tell you which hospital or clinic they are associated. Insurance companies here don't have all these details. Insurance is a scam, worldwide. People in California had their insurance cancelled. People in flood areas of Louisiana and Florida with insurance issues. Pick wisely or better yet, pay cash, faster and cheaper.

@SharrellKline PS, the term "narcotics" as I use it, are legal drugs. Yes there are street narcotics. That term is a classification, it is not referring to street drugs. I'm referring to things like - Codeine (found in some cough syrup), opiates, morphine.....if you have never used a prescription for one of these, that is awesome 👍.

You can hear more from my conversation with Jenny about her experience having surgery in Mexico in this video: th-cam.com/video/vVpqOp06S3g/w-d-xo.html around the 14-minute mark, she specifically talks about pain medicine.

Thanks very much for the info. For financial information, if I have multiple accounts, can I just show the one that meets the requirement. And if we have joint accounts that meet the combined amount for two, would that be ok? Also what is the residency requirement for the permanent residence? Not likely to apply for citizenship because our language barrier and age.

Hi Alex and Ivonne. What a great and informative video. Thank you so much. I have two questions: Once you get to Mexico from your own country, how long would you say the process takes to get temporary residency? We would like to come to Mexico for a few weeks to max a month and then head back because we have kids. Do you think a month is enough time? I see in some places that INM wants a proof of address: how do you proof that? We are thinking of renting airb&b so how can we proof address if we are only there for a short period of time?
