I really like James Taylor in this song but then, I don't think Richie Havens can do any song an injustice. It just becomes a totally different song and tune. Great stuff!
I was awaken at 2:30 a.m. today with this song running through mind. I was young when this was first released. I remember his original "Younger Men Get Older" ...and we do. Getting older can be cool!
I woke up with this song in my mind too... I'm a lot younger (I wasn't born when this was first released!), but not a kid anymore, although this song in many ways framed a lot of my youth... I'm very grateful that he shared his gift with the world and I'm trying to stay cool as I get older too -- probably would have helped if I'd been cool in the first place. ;D
I met Richie in May,2009. He did a benefit for my Elks Lodge. Great guy! Noticed I was alone. When I told him my wife was home with a cold,he insisted on calling her.May,2009 Manasquan,NJ.
So yummy! James Taylor can write it, but Richie Havens makes me feel it. The clouds move in and raindrops seem to fall from the notes when he plays it. My favorite version. Hands down.
i feel its so special to have had an amazing soul touch us all. So much heartfelt music in our past....hard to recognize the music of today wen im just getting caught up on the best of yesterdays...
Can't express the loss the world has experienced in his passing. I saw him only once. And feel blessed that I did.
This guys is probably one of the most talented folk singers ever.
God bless and keep you Mr. Havens. You were a huge personality and a great musician. You will be sorely missed.

Your music -- and this song in particular -- made a big impression on me in my childhood and into my adulthood. Rest in peace.

What a special man Richie Havens was to call your wife to wish her good health.
