    Waiting for my lathe to arrive (backorded 6 weeks - ugh). Thanks for sharing your mini-shop with us, Glenn. Looks like a great place to spend time.

    I appreciate the time you took to make this video, its a great demonstration of the lathe. I will say though, theres a high pitched noise in the background of most of it thats pretty annoying, might wanna find the source of it.

      @GlennNowOnYouTube  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The annoying sound you're talking about is the crappie little motor that comes with the Lathe. This video is a few years old and have learned to remove most of that noise. I'm also in the process of changing the motor for a less annoying one. If you like these types of videos I'm in the middle of a video series "The Big Motor Upgrade " . Thank You, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That is what my channel is all about, Hobby Machining. In fact I am putting together a Mini Lathe Video right now. I also do old machine restorations, which in turn creates more machining projects. If you have friends that are into Hobby Machining let them know about my channel. Thanks again for the kind words and I hope that I can create many more hobby videos for you to enjoy.

    One of the main things I have done on my lathe is making little shaft adaptors like that and thick washers out of aluminium, very handy for that. I would assume the disk is rated for the RPM of the grinder, only issue will be if you have sufficient of the fibre rim clamped.

    • @GlennNowOnYouTube
      @GlennNowOnYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jack, The disk is rated for 13,300 RPM's and my angle grinder tops out at 11,000 RPM's. No problem there. I was adapting the disk & grinder for a up coming video I'm doing called " Testing the Gator Paint Stripping Wheel" . It's coming out on June 18, 2022. It was a fun video to make, I hope you find the time to watch it. Thanks for watching the video and commenting.

    Those Mikita grinders you just flip the 2 pieces around & they fit the larger sized hole perfectly at least that’s how mine all came.

    Would it be possible to make piston rings on a mini lathe, the originals are cast iron I believe, the piston OD is 65.95mm and the thickness of the rings is 1.48mm, I was wondering if I could turn down bore out a piece of cast iron bar stock and then part off the the rings, I have no lathe or any idea if this is even possible
    Thanks

    • @GlennNowOnYouTube
      @GlennNowOnYouTube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure, its possible. With the right type of cast iron the right tooling/fixtures precision measuring instruments and a way to heat treat the finished product. But as far as doing it on a mini lathe. Why not? Yes, it depends on who is running the machine.

    hi, technically a good presentation but what RPM is that stripping pad rated for? Usually disks and pads have different diameter center holes so they match machines that have appropriate output shaft speed in RPM for the pad or disk that is used with it. Adapters like this can be a significant risk if the speed rating (RPM) is higher than the pad is rated for, your only protection is a really good face shield.

    • @GlennNowOnYouTube
      @GlennNowOnYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank You for the concern, One of the first things I checked into was the RPM's of both the grinder and the disk. The disk is rated for 13,300 RPM's and the grinder tops out at 11,000 RPM's. Also, when machining the spacer I did my best to keep the ID and OD concentric, by machining them in the same setup. I also tried to keep the fits close so not to have any runout or balance problems. That's why I was calling this precision machining, I guess that I should have mentioned all of that in the video. Like I said, Thanks for the Concern. And Thank You for watching my video and commenting.

  • @tourdetinus1743

    Can that disk handle the rpm of the grinder or does it explode?

    I am looking to buy a mini lathe and there is so many out there. Why did you choose the Harbor Freight model? Does it meet your expectations?

    • @GlennNowOnYouTube
      @GlennNowOnYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The number one reason for buying a Harbor Freight Mini Lathe is, it was the easiest to get my hands on. But, When I looked into the manufacturer of the mini lathe and mini mill, I found that most of the china made lathes were made by the same company. They painted them a different color depending on the customer. So, I guess it depends on the price. Harbor Freight has good prices. You asked, Does it meet my expectations. Yes, as far as China built mini lathes go. It can do everything I asked of it, and I've been machining with it for 18 plus years. I have always been told that its not the machine tool its the person running it. Good Luck with your hunt for a mini lathe. Thank You for watching my videos. I bought a Sieg Chinese made lathe, a bit larger than yours but looks almost identical. A great lathe as long as you respect its limitations. The comments stating to just go and buy the bushings miss the whole point of a lathe. It’s fun to make parts and work with the lathe. Since buying mine a couple of years ago the lathe gets used almost every time I go to the workshop for something, whether it be turning parts, buffing, polishing, etc.
      Great work mate.

      Hello John, If you watch most of the videos about Mini Lathes you'll find that everyone is doing upgrades and fixes. ALL, of the china built mini lathes have back lash. I haven't done any fixes yet. Mostly because in the 50 years of machining background I've had to run some pretty shitty machines. There are ways around all of those problems.
