  • I finally got a CNC! Carbide 3D recently released their new Shapeoko 4, and I got one of the first models out of the door. In this video I will unbox the CNC, assemble the CNC, and give you my initial thoughts on the machine and why I chose this particular model.

    Really glad I wasn’t the only one who had issues assembling the Shapeoko 4. My gantry had also come loose from the foam packaging and I also had to use some of the spare hardware.
    I missed that there were no paper instructions when I ordered so assembly was more frustrating than it should have been.
    Most frustratingly I emailed Shapeoko with some detailed feedback on the assembly process and they haven’t even replied.

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I am happy overall with the machine, but there were certainly some small details that were missed.

    I was in a toss up between the X-Carve and the Shapeoko. Glad I seen your video...minus the "issues" I did decide on the Shapeoko 4 XXL with the upgrades. Do you have any content on 3D CNC work?

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In an upcoming video I’ll show a bit on geometric 3D drawer fronts I am making. No tutorials on the process though.
      I think you made the right choice over the X Carve.

    Did all your endstop switches work as they should'ave out the box? i Just finished building mine today and my Z end stop wires were reversed lmao, otherwise have had no problems.
    Loved the video!

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had some issues with my end stops. My Z had some loose wiring at the middle connection. I think the break in the cabling is really a weak point on these machines. I also had an issue with my Y motors being wired in reverse, but that was an easy fix. Thanks for checking out the video! I am glad you enjoyed it!

    I just finish my Shapeoko 4 assembly yesterday Thursday June 17. The same thing happened to me with the grub screw. Luckily

    • @gh64055
      @gh64055 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It only caused a small nick. I noticed that all the x y and z motor pulleys also had loose grub scews so I tighten them down as well. Hopefully all will be good now

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, mine damaged it enough that I think it will degrade the V wheel over time, but Carbide 3D was awesome and replaced everything. I used a little bit of loctite on all the grub screws to prevent the problem from happening again! I have been using my CNC a ton, and hope you love yours. I am currently editing the video about the CNC enclosure, so stay tuned!

    The missing hardware and shipping damage would bother me after spending that much money.
    I decided to order the Onefinity Journeyman X-50 due to the stiff rails and ball screws (no belts).

    Another video on A Shapeoko that pulls me to wish I went that direction rather than buying my Stepcraft 2/D600 back in 2018. Things have blossomed lately for doing a small batch "job" of wood cutouts for my borther. I just have issues with it try to get where I want to be with it. Likely make some money for providing the CNC capability for him. Its just been a hobby all these years but its been stressful. Kinda stuck with what I got and make do for what it is. It might've been a mistake purchase back then for me but definitely better than the lil wimpy chinese machine I had before it.
    What I like about the Shapeoko and the XCarve type of routers is that everyone has one, which drives development and a new revamped product practically every year. Kinda like Mustangs. Everyone has one, and the aftermarket feeds off of it. In turn gives what we want.
    I like the Shapeoko hybrid table shown compared to what Stepcraft puts out. Definitely preferred

    Getting ready to order either the shapeoko 4 XXL or the pro XXL. Trying to decide if I'm really going to need the extra rigidity of the pro. How is the rigidity of the 4 now that this video is older?

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want rigidity, you probably want the pro. The router mount has a little more play than I would like.

    Good video. I have had my Onefinity Woodworker for a year this month. You should really look into them 2,000 for a 32"x32" (Really easy to build, up and running in under 30 min.) upgradeable to 50"x32" I think 800$ more? getting nice accessories as well. you can mount it onto the wall. +more no belts, or the longmill 30"x30" for under 1000$ no belts as well (I think?¿?). I thought shapeoko would ditch the belts by now? I know they work fine for light work loads. But i wanted to dabble in aluminum is Why i went with onefinity.

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, their customer service ended up being extremely helpful and got the replacement parts out, no questions asked. They overnighted new extrusion and V wheels via FedEx.

    • @JustusScottJr

      @@CombsDesign good to hear. I'm about to order my first machine and I like the price point, but I've seen some videos with similar issues to yours and the customer service was not always so spot on. I think they might be growing a little faster than they can handle.

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, on their last release they took a ton of pre-orders and were overwhelmed with demand. Their new approach is to only take orders they can handle, and then mark everything out of stock until available again. You can tell they are a growing company, but at the end of the day, I can tell they are trying hard and do care about the customer. I am willing to deal with some of the smaller business problems because they seem so customer oriented now.

    can you help me out on connecting the connections?
    Shapeoko does not do a very good job of explaining it clearly. They have a picture in the manual but no close-up of how the wires get connected. Instructions are not very well explained...thanks

  • @TheUsernamechris

    I know you've already got the machine, but in the video you mentioned that you didn't think there were any other equivalent machines out there at a similar pricepoint so I figured I'd stick my hand up and mention the LongMill CNC which just had it's MK2 version released and is coming out with a whole range of similar attributes for a great price 👍

  • @markgreene8600
    @markgreene8600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Their instructions specifically tell you to take the grub screw out once the router is installed for that very reason. It's used to separate the collet during installation, but it should be removed afterwards.

    • @bjarteladden1
      @bjarteladden1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It`s not the grub screw in the spindle mount - he specifically says in the video that it is a grub screw that is part of the Y-axis motor assembly. That said - I am pretty sure C3D support will take care of this.

    • @CombsDesign
      @CombsDesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The grub screw I am referencing is part of the motor assembly that sits directly over the extrusion and V wheels, not the mount for the router.
