    moomin meme: "I say morning, not good morning because if it was good, I would still be in bed and not talking to people"

    • @naniyodesu
      @naniyodesu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It's understandable that he was confused by the "tomorrow", because translators won't understand it.
      Because "huomen" is not an actual word outside the phrase "hyvää huomenta" but it closely resembles "huominen", which means "tomorrow". And that's something google translate couldn't pick up on, because "huomen" doesn't refer to "tomorrow" but to the morning.
      "Hyvää huomenta" is a fixed expression and always means "good morning", but if you actually, for some reason, wanted to wish someone to "have a good next day/tomorrow", that would be "hyvää huomista".

    • @kasperjoonatan6014
      @kasperjoonatan6014 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@naniyodesu Huomen is a word, and means morning. Though (younger) people don't understand it and so translate machines don't understand it. e.g. google translate is very good, but it does not use old knowledge very much. Unlike wiktionary, which knows very many old Finnish words. A foreigner should use that often.

    • @naniyodesu
      @naniyodesu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kasperjoonatan6014 Whoops, my mistake then! Didn't know that. That's interesting. I've never ever heard the word "huomen" used on its own.

    • @kasperjoonatan6014

      @@naniyodesu Oh yes it is important! Consider saying to your beloved in the morning in May:

      @@kasperjoonatan6014 That's true, but in that case you can understand the meaning from the context by recognizing it as the same word from the phrase hyvää huomenta, just like the moomin meme :D

    Explaining the ”waka waka vanha Väinämöinen” meme a bit: So the Finnish epic Kalevala is a collection of stories in poem/song form about Väinämöinen and many other characters and their adventures. One of the most popular ”quotes” of this Kalevala is ”vaka vanha väinämöinen, tietäjä iän-ikuinen” which roughly translates to ”strong old Väinämöinen, an eternal seer/wise man” (and I mean VERY roughly bc some of the words are old and thus very hard to translate). The whole point is that the old Finnish word ”vaka” reminds of the ”waka waka” in the song Shakira made in 2010 😂😂 also you got the translation a bit wrong there, what it basically says in the meme is ”therapist: waka waka old Väinämöinen is not real, he can’t hurt you”.

    Google Translate gets hella confused with any nonstandard sentence structures and unusual/multi-meaning words (huomen instead of aamu - both mean morning, but huomen also means 'tomorrow morning' specifically) ... and honestly just Finnish in general. It'd be more accurate to look at wiktionary word by word for example, just a *LOT* more work.

    Memes are tricky because they usually require that you completely understand the sentence and have a good grasp on the culture as well, due to the minimal amount of context provided. So not a good measure for how well you know your basics, but probably a great tool for when you're more familiar with the language and culture. :) Also, as a Finnish translator I'm relieved to see that google translate won't replace me for a while...

    And calling Väinämöinen a hero is wrong on sooo many levels... main character yes. Hero not so much, as demonstrated by the story behind this meme.
    On the one side you have old man Väinämöinen (vaka vanha Väinämöinen) on the other young Aino who's forced to become his wife and the only way to escape Aino finds is to drown herself.

    2:48 "The light at the end of a tunnel is turned off to conserve energy" The joke is referring to the stories that dying people see a light at the end of a tunnel.
    4:29 In Kalevala Väinämöinen is often referred as "Vaka vanha Väinämöinen", thus "Waka waka" joke. I'm not really sure what "vaka" is supposed to mean.
    6:22 The meme is about that when you visit our refrigerator at 3AM all that's there has gotten spoiled except milk & cottage cheese, so no, it's not a story about milk turning to cheese. It's about dealing with what you've got even though it's not much.

The real first chapter starts: 'Vaka Vanha Väinämöinen' which is the traditional three-words-starting-with-the-same-sound-in-a row type of poem. This meme is a mashup with Shakira's song and the traditional Kalevala start- (Vaka -> waka) also fear of old powerfull white bearded mages is a thing, so that is why the therapist is trying to prove Väinämöinen is not real (oikea)

    What this video was like for me: man fails to pronounce finnish words and i laugh at how bad google translate is

  • @livetefter4050

    On a (boyfriends) family dinner, after dessert, someone said in finnish something like "if you sit too long at dinner/by the table you get lazy kids". All laughed exept me. "Oh, you don't speak finnish." And they translated that part for me (rest of conversations still unrevealed though). But what did they say in finnish? I've asked others from Swedish Tornedalen, but noone's heard of it. Is it a saying from "real Finland" (Swedish Tornedalen have it's own "Finnish" called Meänkieli.)?

    7:11 I always say "huomenta" and not "hyvää huomenta" because if the morning was good , I would still be in bed and not interacting with other people.

    Google translator messed up the Kekkonen meme aswell. "Pientä Kekkoa" should be just "Small Kekkoa", as "kekko" is not the same as "keko" which means "pile" in english. Not the greatest meme anyway, but it's kinda shame that the translator messes the words like that. For some reason google translator can't translate finnish to english properly but if you translate finnish to any other language it goes really smoothly.

    I think it was a really smart move to ask for some worthy memes because there are SO many bad ones that basically play with non-existing stereotypes and give a false impression of Finland and Finns. Aaand those memes are usually how foreigners who have never been to Finland view us Finns and it's just not accurate at all:D

  • @mikkoh85

    Some of the memes were just bad like the moomin not saying good morning. And all of them were new ones to me. But the Väinämöinen meme was just hilarious. There is this very well known sentence from Kalevala: ”Vaka vanha Väinämöinen laski laulellen vesiä”, which is kind of old finnish and not said like that anymore, but it is translated like ”Stable old Väinämöinen singing while went along the stream of water (maybe with a boat?)” or as it also sounds to modern people: ”Stable old Väinämöinen singing while taking a leak”. That’s another meme. We don’t know or understand our Kalevala so well at all. But this one just makes the Vainamoinen look like some kind of voodoo man and ”Waka waka” is just sounding like ”vakaa vanha”, and some nonsensical warnings about him. It’s just downright silly. It reminds me of some jesus jokes

    • @mikkoh85
      @mikkoh85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole Kalevala is something we all are forced to read at some point during elementary school. It is considered somehow important national story but honestly it is boring and makes no sense to children that age. The phrases are almost like different language and hard to understand. Reading it makes you wait there was some kind of catch but there is no catch, it’s not funny or interesting or anything. Like ”Ok, there is this guy singing and going down the stream, so what then? I guess it’s kind of storytelling, of what I could understand about it”. Then after you have been forced to read it you’ll never do it again. It kind of makes my head hurt like yours when you tried to understand the memes. Makes no sense for the most part. So maybe the joke is about the nonsense of original Kalevala too. Makes just as much sense. Made me crack a little bit :) Similar to the mandatory cross-country skiing for all children like two times a year at school. Parents have to buy skis and bring them to school because of that. And children need to haul them around school. Makes no sense and no one likes it but it’s part of being finnish I guess? Some old stuff.

    • @mikkoh85
      @mikkoh85 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also in Kalevala there is used ”vaka” instead of ”vakaa”, which means stable. No one uses ”vaka” anymore and it seems like typo. So maybe this ”waka waka” is making fun of that typo

    Dave: I don't get that. This is confusing.
    Me yelling at the screen on most memes: NO!! Dave! It does not mean that!! You don't get it!! IT IS ACTUALLY FUNNY XD
    This was actually fun to watch. Please make more of these type of videos but maybe have a finnish friend with you (on Discord?) who can actually explain finnish memes since most of them are either grammatically challenging. Google translate did not do a good job on most of the translations.
