  • Hi Everyone :)
    Welcome back!
    I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.
    Purchasing items from the links on these pages will help support my IG page of science and wonder.
    Buy physicsfun toys on : bit.ly/2MOjFET (Official websit 🇺🇸)

    This video contains :
    👉🏻 Perspective Anamorphosis: oblique graphical projection creates a wonderful 3D illusion, implemented here with color printing and cutout card-stock.
    👉🏻 Magneto Top: a top that generates electricity and lights LEDs when spun.
    👉🏻 Laser Fog Light Show: making the invisible visible - a rotating mirror produces a cone of laser illumination revealing the complex and beautiful patterns of nondiffusive turbulent flow as the air sodden with fog droplets mixes into the ambient air. Looks even better in person without the flicker from the frame rate aliasing during video capture (although I was able to minimize it somewhat- well...when I posted it the Instagram process made the flicker worse).
    👉🏻 Bouillant de Franklin (Hand Boiler): reversible liquid-gas phase transition device made famous by Benjamin Franklin who was one of the first to describe the physics of its operation.
    👉🏻 Floating Hourglass Puzzle: famous physics puzzle- why does the hourglass not start rising right away?
    👉🏻 Pin-Tumbler Lock: simple and accurate model of how a basic lock works.
    👉🏻Pendulum Snake: 15 independent swinging pendulums, each with a slightly longer period than the one to its left side, create mesmerizing wave patterns.
    👉🏻 Sodium Fluorescein: this organic compound acts as a special dye that absorbs energy of blue and UV light and then emits it as green light. In daylight a solution of fluorescein will appear to have a strange green highlight, but when illuminated from behind it is yellowish gold in color due to absorption of all the blue and green light that tries to pass through. This sample of fluorescein solution is encased in acrylic and made in to this odd paperweight I found on eBay. A fun physics find!
    👉🏻 UFO Mirascope: two parabolic mirrors create a 3D image above the actual object.
    👉🏻 Thermochromic Chiral Liquid Crystals: the thin layer changes color as the molecules of the liquid crystal change orientation and spacing during the phase transition from liquid (warm) to crystal (cool). A postcard from the amazing Exploratorium museum in San Francisco.
    👉🏻 Tesla Zero: a top that generates electricity and lights LEDs when spun.
    👉🏻 Rainbow Twirler: shaped by angular momentum and centripetal acceleration- when the speed of the ribbon is faster than the flicker fusion frequency of human vision it looks like a bubble. As the rotation speed increases the shape flattens- similar to the way the Earth bulges due to its rotation. Found this fun motorized base for this item in a toy store last week.
    👉🏻 Spiral Kinetic Art: hanging by fishing line a single rod of aluminum is shaped into connected helixes- one clockwise the other counterclockwise.
    👉🏻 Moiré Necklace: kinetic art jewelry by David Derksen Design utilizes Moiré interference to generate pattern and motion.
    👉🏻 Bismuth Crystal Pendent: element 83 on the periodic table, bismuth becomes crystalline when melted and cooled.
    👉🏻 Piezo Film Flicker: a neon bulb flashes from electricity created by the mechanical deformation of a strip of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) piezo film.
    👉🏻 Ghostly Lenticular: changing the angle of view produces a subtle morphing from a Victorian era photo to an unexpected ghostly version of skeletons.

    For the hourglass floating in the tube "puzzle": When the bottom of the hourglass is empty it is more buoyant than the top, so it tries to flip to the top, but its stopped by the sides of the tube, wedging it in place. Once just over half the sand is in the bottom it floats upright and rises.

    • @royitaqi
      @royitaqi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Allow me to add more details to what Robert said. The reason that it's "wedging it in place", is because of the friction between the hourglass and the cylindrical container. If the surfaces were to have zero friction, the hourglass would have ascended at the beginning.

    • @roberthobbs6318

    1:54 - hourglass itself is lighly bouyant in this liquid with this preasure. When you rotate the tube - hourglass center of mass is higher than center of bouyancy and it tries to rotate (to position when sand at bottom and empty part at top). When it trying to rotate it touches walls of the tube so friction prevent hourglass to float up. When sand pass the half way - center of mass become lower than center of buoyancy and there no more force trying to tip hourglass and no more friction to tube's walls so nothing now prevents hourglass to float up.

    • @physicsfun
      @physicsfun  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here’s my best take- sand moves within any hourglass and the property of the hourglass that changes most significantly as the sand redistributes is its center of mass. When the assembly is initially flipped over the hourglass is very top heavy with all the sand in the top chamber so it tilts and presses against the wall of the tube with enough force that friction holds it in place. When enough sand moves to the bottom, the hourglass straightens up lessening the friction, and it then begins to rise.

    Recently, we saw the butterfly with ant biting it poorly, We gently hold the butterfly's wings while carefully remove the ant below it. We found no puller as quickly as possible to remove the ant biting butterfly poorly, but we found nipper and use it carefully to remove ant without any harm to butterfly's legs. That was dangerous, but fortunately, we manage to do it carefully and now the butterfly is save and free from that annoying ant.

    Yes that is effect of centripetal acceleration.Centripetal force is a type of force that acts inwardly to the center of rotation and Centrifugal force is an type of force that acts outwardly to the center of rotation.Centrifugal force is a pseudo force.
    Fun fact-Centripetal force is an action force where as centrifugal force is not a reaction force.

    • @physicsfun
      @physicsfun  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Centripetal force is the component of force acting on an object in curvilinear motion which is directed towards the axis of rotation or center of curvature. Centrifugal force is a pseudo force in a circular motion which acts along the radius and is directed away from the center of the circle.

    your quiz is uncannily timed since i just relearned the definitions of centripetal and centrifugal on the same day you posted this vid.
    centripetal is the force that keeps an orbiting object near its axis of orbit, which can be thought of as opposing the centrifugal pseudo-force that is causing the orbiting object to move away from the axis of orbit. 7:25

    centrifugal force is real, it just doesn't work like you think it does. The spinning liquid is prevented from flying off at a tangent by the centripetal force exerted on it by the wheel,, but the liquid in turn exerts an equal and opposite centrifugal force on the rim. If you sit in a cushioned chair on the edge of a spinning wheel, when you get up the cushion is indented from the weight of your body pressing on it, more than if the chair was stationary. What you experience as "centrifugal force" is the centripetal force of the chair acting on you; what the chair experiences is the centrifugal force that you exert on it.

      @@physicsfun 🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️
      🔴 Islam is not just another religion.
      🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
      🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
      🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.
      🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine.
      🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as:
      📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚
      🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus.
