    I'm imagining a commander pirate captain with the witch archetype picking up lesson of the shark. Going full Davy Jones.

    Devourer of Decay's design actually really sings. You keep the fear up. Then if an ally crits and makes the enemy go below half you can feed them the cantrip heal, devouring the decay. Then put the fear on someone else and sicken the crit target since they don't stack. So "the decay spreads". Mechanical synergy that matches flavor *chef's kiss*

    The wings familiar to me seems like it was designed to have murmuration cast with the familiar as the target. Using the free movement to position the familiar near allies, dicouraging the enemies to move towards anyone the familiar is near, as that would be moving towards the familiar, forcing the save.

    • @TheBearProphet
      @TheBearProphet หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Holy crap, great eye for how that combo works. I was scratching my head at the design choice before. You could even put the familiar behind them to make them take damage while retreating.

    • @toodleselnoodos6738
      @toodleselnoodos6738 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ya, it was pretty clear to me that’s the intent.
      Since you can trigger a familiar ability before the hex effect, you’re essentially getting free action moves, meaning you don’t need to pick Independent and can select something else.
      It’s comparable to Silence in Snow Witch, that is it deals damage and tries to affect enemy movement. It’s slightly better and slightly worse than Silence in Snow. You just have to be intelligent on positioning your familiar to really take advantage.
      An intelligent enemy might realize the trick and play around it. Phase Familiar might end up being more useful than Patron’s Puppet in this case.

    • @deadstones1
      @deadstones1 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The free move seems extremely useful for familiars with manual dexterity. It's pretty short, but if it allows your familiar to move onto an ally, it could take one of their items (such as a healing potion) and use it on them with its actions.

    • @toodleselnoodos6738
      @toodleselnoodos6738 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@deadstones1 Familiars can’t activate items like potions/elixirs/etc..
      BUT, you do give an interesting point!
      You can move your familiar, Command your familiar, and the familiar can get an item out of their bag and place it in their hand.
      So, while they can’t activate items, the action-economy save is extremely valuable.
      Great call!!!

      Is this really that much better than just recasting the spell on a different ally each turn though? Murmuration unfortunately doesn't really seem to come with any benefit for sustaining the spell, aside from the range, so you might as well just recast it?

  • @Iced333
    @Iced333 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I would have combined sheltered wings and familiar of nimble flight.
    When you Cast or Sustain a hex your familiar can Fly up to 15 feet as you cause immense wings to sprout from your familiar; this movement doesn't trigger reactions. If your familiar ends this movement adjacent to an ally, it lands on their back; the familiar is automatically carried by the ally until the beginning of your next turn, and its wings provide them lesser cover while carried. At the beginning of your next turn, the familiar hops off your ally into an adjacent square.

    Feet to Fins at 3rd rank being able to target only willing creatures is still bananas to me. Slap a save on it, write up the degrees of success, and let players point it at enemies. It's competing with some bangers at 3rd rank.

    Regarding the low damage of Blood In The Water, it's significant to keep in mind that the condition for the trigger is only "When you Sustain". This means that you can trigger the spirit damage more than once per turn, as per Sustain A Spell's rule.
    So, for witch itself it might be a bit of a gamble, but for a martial dipping into witch, it becomes an excellent spell to cast in one turn then bash with slashing strikes on subsequent turns to trigger it multiple times per turn.

    Witch's Armaments is a pretty good argument why to pick the dedication on a martial character, if you have nothing better to do (with FA, sometimes without). That improvement makes the choice even more tempting.

    On first read, I thought Sheltering Wings was your ally was on the back of your familiar and was excited theory crafting a Witch that can deliver allies safely through enemy threatened squares without risk of reaction strikes, when combined with the Wing Witch familiar ability. That would have been fun to pick up an ally moving past you and then deliver it 15ft forward and avoiding reactionary strikes.

    I wish Portents of the Haruspex would include, that you communicate that information. If I am not mistaken, as it's written it would mean you need to wait till your turn to tell allies about it and if they attack before that with the correct type, the enemy still somehow takes more damage. But I guess that's an easy homebrew.

    Three thoughts overall:
    1 - Malicious Shadow + Blood in the Water. Round 1 cast Malicious Shadow . Round 2 sustain and hope for a hit to trigger Blood in the Water.
    1b - For a big enemy fight, Non-Primal Witches can Rouse Skeleton round 1, Sustain+Blood in the Water round 2. Round 3, cast Malicious Shadow hex, sustain Rouse Skeleton. Round 4 sustain Malicious Shadow twice, sustain Rouse Skeleton. Or use Organsight for a Recall Knowledge + Sustain Rouse Skeleton (Auto Sustain BitW) + Sustain BitW.
    A Silence in Snow Witch has some serious slotless combat power. Clinging Ice eventually surpasses Blood in the Water, meaning it’ll be better casting Clinging Ice over a 2nd/3rd BitW sustain. But it’s nice seeing the Witch have a way to maintain some constant blasting even when low on spell slots (or even be able to save their spell slots for later threats).
    2 - Sheltering Wings is likely Standard Cover. +2c to AC and Reflex is essentially a Reflexive Shield + Dancing Shield as a focus point. That’s really good! Even better, since your familiar rides along, grab the Crawling Hand familiar via Enhanced Familiar. At level 6 (when you access Lesson of the Flock), your familiar gains an extra familiar ability which can be used on Independent. Now your familiar can provide +1c to attack without needing you to Command it to keep up. If you’re a Spinner of Threads Witch, you’re essentially placing Protection/Heroism + Dancing Shield on an ally for a single focus point. There only Witches that don’t have a solid combat option are Inscribed One (the flanking is useless while riding) and Whisper on Wings (your family is gonna be following the whole time, so the flight is useless).
    So many great combos with other Witch patrons too. My personal favorite idea is a Beastmaster Witch, using your familiar to protect your animal companion (or in another extreme, on a summon). With Hidebound, you can do a much better job protecting your minions. I’ve tried a Physical Wilding Steward using the Spirit Guide and Summon Animal (Wolf) for “Packmaster” type character to decent effect. Wild Witch’s Armament - Eldritch Nails is essentially a solid back-up plan when you’re backed in a corner for a Wilding Steward. And Hidebound/Sheltering Wing can help the survivability of your animal companion/summon.
    3 - Wild Witch’s Armament is unfortunately a trap for Witch. Eldritch Nail is will have approximately 8-11% chance of happening. But it’s extremely action heavy: say an enemy is in your face - 2x Strike then Stride, but you’ll lose your hex if you don’t Cackle it. And most Witches do not have the tools to stand toe-to-toe with an enemy (I think only the Wilding Steward can do it, which I’ve played and tested out with solid success due to Wilding Word + Interposing Earth). Iron Jaw is closer to a 1-2.5% of ever happening. Only Living Hair is a good option as many Witches don’t have a solid free-hand 1A offensive option.
    I’ve always preferred Iron Jaw because a 1d8 free hand Strike is nice. Eldritch Nail being Agile is nice, but I like the idea of having a Staff + Shield in hand, or even Shield + Free-Hand for Patron’s Puppet valet.
    Personally, I would’ve preferred to have a “Sustaining Strikes” (like Bespelled or Psi Strikes) that gives you bonus damage after sustaining a hex.
    2+3: Blood in the Water + Wild Witch Armaments (Eldritch Nails) sounds like a good combo, but I think it’s also a trap for most Witches. It’ll be better getting that symbiote archetype with its Slashing damage save and using that alongside a sustain spell, rather than risking poor martial abilities which will likely cause the hex to drop (and also probably get one-turned KO’d bu an enemy).
    Again, it’s not the concept or the damage that’s immediately on my mind - it’s the action economy and accuracy that makes me mellow on it. But maybe someone will prove me wrong in practice!
    Still, lots of fricking cool stuff in there! I like to play Wilding Steward and the new spells (Hidebound and Albatross’s Curse) are absolutely things worth getting excited over!

    26:30 If it provided lesser cover it would be stated "it provides lesser cover" instead of "it provides cover". It says it provides Cover so it provides standart cover and standart cover can be used to hide/sneak.
    The spell is still bad tho it should've been the cantrip.

    Blood in the Water + Ostilli Symbiote - Magic Spit (with versatile mutation) can do slashing damage with a basic reflex, so they only don't take damage on a critical success.

    Love this book everything coming out seems so flavorful even as someone who wants more villainous or even unsettling nature powers to be the focus I am pleasantly surprised to see witch on point at that front, now we just need a druid grafter subclass and i would say this book has hit almost everything I could want.

    Murmuration's Heighten is written that way because the success says 1d4 piercing OR sonic and the crit says 1d4 of each. So the heighten is written correctly.
    Also the offensive ability to make moving the familar relevant is the Murmuration cantrip which punishes enemies from moving towards the target. You put that effect on your familiar and you can move the direction they are punished for going on sustain or casting.

    • @Pixie1001.
      @Pixie1001. หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the main issue was that the spell doesn't do any damage on a success or critical success - because it's a save, not an attack. The success is the bad thing for the player.
      But also, I'm pretty sure the second part is a typo as well - it just seems unnecessarily clunky. Like, just make it do +1d4 of both damage types, rather than that weird 1d4 sonic + 3d4 slashing thing it seems to suggest? Like, do you need to pick which damage type benefits from each individual 2d4 bonus at higher levels? It kinda feels like it used to just do 2d4 sonic of either type on a crit, and they forgot to fix the heighten text...

    Could you mix the Ripple of the Deeps familiar ability and murmuration? Murmuration doesn’t specify taking a move action, it just says if the target moves towards whoever you name. If that’s true then theoretically you could force the target to move closer to whoever you named if you have two witches and just get free damage by casting or sustaining a hex

    So let's say a thaumaturge in the party puts a personal antithesis on the monster then the witch gives it weakness to acid equal to its level and the thaumaturge is able to make the check to discern that weakness. Does the thaumaturge deal damage equal to its personal antithesis amount or the new weakness amount or both?

    • @Pixie1001.
      @Pixie1001. หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hrmm, I don't think you can reveal that weakness with exploit vulnerability, since they're not actually weak to that damage type until after someone hits them with an attack? It doesn't say 'gains weakness X until hit by X damage', just that they're considered weak if hit by X damage. But if you did somehow manage to exploit it, I guess you'd be stuck doing acid damage to the creature even though that would cease to be vulnerable to it after the first attack, since it's the greatest vulnerability that you discovered?

    I was not happy with Whisperer of Wings. It feels like a downgrade from Mosquito Witch’s Buzzing Bite hex. Buzzing Bite only requires the roll once. Will save is a bit easier to pass I guess as a trade off.
