It is a constant source of amazement to me how sophisticated and polished some old games are, especially given the power and audiovisual limitations of these 8-bit computers.
Once I was playing this and it was really exciting and immersive so I was bending my entire upper body in my chair in accordance with the airplane turning. My mum was watching and asked "do you really have to lean over like that?" This old masterpiece provided me with gaming experiences that were way more immersive than that dam Oculus Rift I have ever can.
I sold all mine when i got my 1st 386 i had a Commodore 128 with a 1571 then a 1541 disk drive. I had them all Gunship, F-14, Project Stealth Fighter, Raid on Bungeling Bay. Tho the games i played to death were the Forgotten Realms series, Cures of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and so on.
@@goslpa I'll hold on to this message in case I decide to do so. FYI, it does look used and I think the keyboard overlay is a bit damaged, I think I had to tape it in one place. Also, there is a little bit of water damage in one spot around one of the corners (I don't have it in front of me). My mouthwash leaked on it in my luggage one time when I went to visit my dad. It's in decent shape, though. I still remember that after all these years. :-)
I spent many, many, an hour playing this game! I'd play so much and I can remember looking at the clock and realized i had been playing all night and lost track of time, and I had to get up for work in like 3-4 hours!
I remember the hour it took to load from cassette. I finished a career. That was 100hrs minumum, loading. I bloody loved this manual, and its free game.
Such a great game. Excellent presentation and documentation. EDIT: My first proper mission was over Libya, Cold War situation. Got the primary target, then got hit. Had to bail out right over Tripoli. - Canopy blown! Hold on! - Got captured, fortunately was exchanged for Soviet spy. 'After an embarrassing international incident, Lt. So and So returned to his squadron.' One minor point: no collission detection between different planes. Used this as an exploit, letting enemy interceptors fly through me as their radar could not lock on, then shot them from behind. Gunship was better by a slight margin I believe, although I have never been able to ram a Hind out of the air. EDIT: I found out you could destroy pretty much any ground target just with guns. Except the sub pens and other bunkers.
Hi, Great videos, I see that we played the same games. Personally, I took the direction of the military flight simulators but without leaving aside the other games. I still have all my machines and games, Atari 2600, Commodore 64 and 128, Amiga 500 and 1200. Obviously PC ..... Good continuation !!!😃
i bought this off a teacher, one day I got the CMOH, and i think upwards of 2000 points. Man I planned the mission well, took out targets of opportunit.. Climbed to ceiling knowing I was running out of fuel, then glider in from about thirty miles out and 40000 feet. dont remember but yeah that was so cool
Like the first game I ever really got into, awesome for back then, and to think played this on a yellow and black monochrome lol (talk about hard on your eyes 👀)
The graphics are wireframe, which the C64 never really had an issue with. Check out other C64 games like MoonFall, Elite and Mercenary for other examples.
@@AchtungBaby77 Mercenary was cool one, played it through you escape in a rocket in the end.. the sequel was too hard for me.. the game came in a paper envelope with "top secret" documents .. xD

There's that old saying, "less is more".

I still have this game in it's original box. Good times.

I played this religiously when it came out. This was my first real flight Sim.
This takes me back! The game was difficult as hell.
Used to love this game. This and Gunship.

I made it to colonel in 35 missions back in 89 - 90 , loads of fun
I played this simulation a lot 87/88. Loved it.
I played this to death. Didn't it come with a keyboard overlay as well?
Yes, I think it was the first overlay
Not to mention an instruction manual the size of a phonebook!!
Gunship was first with keyboard overlay I think.
Amazing game, it's hard to believe they were able to program it for the 8bit home computers of the 80's

Played a lot!
OMG, didn't know about C64 version of this. Played a lot in DOS version on 286 pc. 30 years ago...
Good memories for this and Gunship.

I had a little metal toy jet that looked like the jet in this game. Back in early 90's.
I would land with zero fuel after I lit up everything lol this was ahead of its time.

I loved this game! I had the cassette tape version it took 3 hours to download 😂😂😂
This looks amazing
damn it looks so good
I use to love this game! Wonder if they got an updated version on game consoles today?!

And all this came before the F-117 came about. Remember the F-19 was just a smokescreen.
super impressive framerate for C64. Is this actually real speed?
Yes from what I remember it is. I put quite a few hours into this game when I was a kid.
The graphics are wireframe, which the C64 never really had an issue with.

How did you manage to make this run smoother without the sound coming out distorted?
SantaClaus
I remember this on the c64 really, the zx spectrum with sh!te though
2014
Omg, take out the SAM first!
He picked Cold War at the start, destroying anything but the primary target lowers your score.
But that's a Persian Gulf mission...
