It’s their voices. They feel so surreal. This is a surrealist movie, it’s abstraction that creates the deepest connections. You feel drawn to this scene as much as anyone willing to appreciate it for what it is. 🙌

What is amazing is how this scene was total serendipity. They saw the show on the street that was happening in real life, and just thought of this scene on the spot and filmed it.

The fact Kirsten Dunst is the one saying those lines not realising she is the one with the spotless mind, makes it so much more poignant, that once she finds out about her lost memories, she is compeled to send out all the tapes. She knows that to have those memories is better than not. I also like that it isn't the main characters who do it, in lesser movies the hero would somehow bring down the business. But Joel doesn't he plods on with life.

      Soo true
Also how her character is really enthusiastic and fascinated by the process of memory removal until she realizes she is the victim of it, then she flips 180

This is probably my favorite scene in this entire movie. This memory is pretty close to the middle of their relationship. It was a decently considerate amount of time after they started dating, but it was also before all of those illogical arguments and misconceptions about one another started happening. What I love the most is how both of the characters are caught in the midst of true, untainted love. It was so much more than just infatuation. Truly a beautiful moment & theme that perfectly encapsulates Joel and Clem's love.

@@durgaprasada226 Appreciating these lines calls for some background understanding. So here is some history you might wanna dig into-
The poem is based on the clandestine love and subsequent marriage of Héloïse d’Argenteuil to Peter Abélard, her teacher. Abélard insisted that she keep their marriage a secret as it might mar his reputation. However, as the word spread, Abélard persuaded Héloïse to take the vow of silence in the convent of Argenteuil, for her own safety. This act of his was perceived by her family as his attempt to get rid of her. They sought their vengeance by castrating him. Completely mortified, Abélard became a monk in the Abbey of St Denis in Paris. After several years of agonizing separation, Héloïse’s feelings for Abélard were revived. So they exchanged four letters, where they expressed their indignation, anguish, and consternation. However, their conflict of opinions left them both feeling bitter. So she decided on living in solitude than spend an eternity with him.
Now, back to the point -
1- How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
2- The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
3- Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
      4- Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d ..
1- The nuns (chaste women) who devote their life to serving God are cut off from the world and happy due to their ignorance.
2-The vestals forget the world and the world reciprocates it for them. Neither of them has the need to think of the other.
There is bliss in ignorance, but it is insipid, it is like being in deep sleep, there are no worries, no fears, no anxiety, but then there is no fun, no joy being with someone. Devotion to God fulfills this void.
3- A mind that does not dwell upon the tribulations of the past and dissociates itself from any ingrained feelings experiences true bliss, comparable to an “eternal sunshine”.
4- Héloïse feels happy about the fact that her prayer for lapse of memory on events that had bothered her over the years had been answered. Also, she voluntarily demits herself from her wish to be reunited with her long-lost love when she comes to terms with the fact that he never truly loved her.

@@durgaprasada226 it means wouldn't it be great to be someone who doesn't remember all the bad things that happen to them. The movie rejects this and shows how Pope was wrong and it's more poignant as she's the one saying it not realising she has the spotless mind. When she does find out, she sends out all the tapes as she now knows that it's better to have those memories the good and the bad.

it's interesting that even if they erased the memories, the people ended up liking each other all over again anyways, like in the case of joel/clementine, and also that doctor and his secretary...

Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind refers to God or a Supreme Being. Who accepts every prayer. But never grants wishes. That is, it helps you when you most need it. If inferred positively, this could mean that only your urgent needs are satisfied, not every whim. You've got to work for that. But yes, it does help you when you most need it to.
    Just my two cents.
