The one thumbs down is from a bacteria that grew up in a filthy studio and now wants to train BJJ

Soap yes, but you shouldn't use anti-bacterial every time and I've heard that even weekly anti-bacterial is bad. There are a lot of germs on the BJJ mats - however most of them are beneficial bacteria that fight off the ringworm causing etc 'bad' bacteria. By using anti-bacterial you get rid of ALL of the bacteria and if someone on the mat has bad bacteria, then that will overtake the mats. This has happened in a school I was in. They scrubbed too much and that caused near-fatal infections right after. They changed to normal soap for the regular cleaning and all is well now.

I’d love to read from the source you gained the info from please, if you don’t mind sharing. I have searched and can next to nothing on this topic. I know for sure our resident flora on our skin behaves the way you described the mat, but I would love to learn more about what you are saying, if you don’t mind sharing. We traveled the US for two years visiting Jiu Jitsu gyms everywhere and there were three altogether who, each time our daughter came home. Her Gi would have a horrible odor. The odor was the same exact disgusting smell from all three different gyms in three different states. It took so much soaking in vinegar and even Pine-Sol to get the odor out of her Gi and rash guard. Now we are settled down and she has a permanent school. Unfortunately they are one of the three. We are new so it is kind of tricky bringing it up in a way that we will not seem like complainers or snobs. There’s definitely a problem with the mat. Our daughter said every person she rolls with does not have body odor until after they’ve all rolled on the mat. I smell the exact same smell on her Coach and everyone else after they roll . Strange thing is that when you walk in the gym, it doesn’t smell. That’s the only thing different from the other two schools. I’m wondering if they use all natural cleaners or what… Somethings not right and we need help! When we finally address this with them, I am going to offer to donate any cleaner that they are willing to try, different than what they have now. I also love this video because it gave us ideas such as our daughter, arriving early and offering to clean the mats. Something has to be done because it is really ruining the experience.
      Thanks so much.
