    When I was a kid, we lived in Mallorca and my Dad made me a sling and showed me how to use it. I'd practice for hours and hours down on the rocky beach and eventually got to where I could hit small buoys that people tied their boats up to, out on the water. Dad wound up having to pay for a couple of them that were made of hard plastic that I broke. I still have that sling - made from old bootlaces and leather from an old boot.

The guy in this video was really good, but figure that he got two really good shots, one glancing hit that wouldn't have been in the kill zone for small game and two wild shots. What's more, he was very close to the target and wasn't throwing hard. Then add in that long windup that would scare away your game long before your release and you get an idea of just how impractical a sling is.

      They were in great demand for centuries, as I understand it. As someone who's been in one half-hearted rock fight, dodging one at a time, thrown from some distance away, I'd be terrified to see 100 slingers all throwing in my general direction. People talk about archers, but bow strings get wet and useless in the rain, skilled archers can be in short supply, and the ammunition takes a lot of time to manufacture.
      As I recall, the Balearics were also good in hand-to-hand.

      Slingers would be the grenadiers of the ancient world. In lieu of heavier (and less maneuverable) artillery such as catapults, arbalests and trebuchets, slingers could be the largest force of an army with slings made from simple self-made string tied into slings and, of course, their ammunition being limitless and self-portable in large quantities and easily replenishable. Covered by flank marksmen archers; forward, rear, left and right slingers could constantly reconnoiter the enemy in force and initiate and maintain bombardment from behind when engaged with the enemy yet targeting ahead of advancing pikemen (or, better yet, staff flails who could inflict sling-like bone-breaking and concussive blows with flails -- though more medieval in provenance -- in rapid and endless succession even on the rear of the enemy's front rank but, from in front of the enemy, at close-order, as well as parry and thrust with their staves). Pikes would constitute the infantry. Armored with at least bucklers or shields if not body armor, these forces are nothing to dismiss and at ranges at least 100 meters (and about 400 meter maximum for 50kg draw-weight warbows).

    When I was a little kid my dad told my brother and I a story about how he had a sling when he was younger. I asked him a few questions about it, then recreated a sling for my older brother and I. They are so simple to make and holy hell, you can launch rocks so far away. The funny thing.. We launched rocks at things and when we should have gotten in trouble, no one could believe any of us could throw a rock that far, so the issues being lodged against us where negated by how young we were and how it was physically impossible. Little did anyone know how we did it.

Worst case; if you make a very simple sling (Tod of Tod's Workshop has a video on super cheap slings that can be thrown together in mere minutes) and dislike slinging/don't have the space for it, then you lose a few rocks and negligible materials used and have a new respect for good slingers.

      I tried to count the frames... the quality is not the best, but I have 0,7-0,5 seconds for the 20 meters, that’s 28,5-40 m/s, or 102-144 km/s, or 63-90 mph.
      In order to compare with a baseball pitch, consider thar the home plate is 10% closer(18 meters), and the baseball weights 150grams, while in slinging competition, the rocks weights roughly 250 grams, although they are not uniform or regulation.
      So we are talking of roughly the same speed(the MLB average pitching speed for 2018 was 93 mph) for 10% more distance and 60% more weight.
      Also, this is not muzzle velocity, but rather average velocity, and he is not trying to hit top speed, but accuracy. I suppose he can throw way faster if he wants to, sacrificing accuracy, of course

    • @vitoravila9908
      @vitoravila9908 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Now think about it, 250g projectiles at 40m/s amount to 200J of kinetic energy.
