    Great video! What I find most interesting is how much damage the ricochet shot did. Even with it bouncing it put a serious dent in that armour. Being in a group of soldiers with stones bouncing around would have been terrifying. The speed of the lead shot was really cool to see as well.

    • @michaelsk1339
      @michaelsk1339 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know where to get them but you could ask a Lokal shoting range for bullets and cast them your self just need some kind of skillet cast iron is good, a burner because you should do it outside or if you do it in your kitchen, at least ventelate the room and breathing protection indoors. Most bullets have a copper jacket so cut them oben with pliers so the lead can run out, then you can remove all the copper and dirt with a big spoon and pour the lead.

      I melted old fishing weights for mines and used a 4 oz torpedo mold

    • @thejackinati2759
      @thejackinati2759 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unless you purchase lead fishing sinkers, you are pretty much forced to cast them yourself.
      I've found that wooden moulds work very well for casting Roman sling bullets and pretty much all you need are some gouges and sandpaper. Melting lead is about as trivial as melting it in a pan over a small fire. You may want to keep a paraffin wax candle with you, if you see a bunch of dross/slag rising up to the surface as the lead starts to melt then you should chuck in a bit of the wax and let it burn up... that should take care of most of the dross.
      Make sure that you pour as soon as all of the lead melts and don't let it rest for too long after, as once lead starts to hit around ~400 degrees celsius, it starts to emit a lot more fumes.

    Now imagine a scattered group of say 50 slingers hiding in tall grass. Your line of hoplites or warriors sees nothing but the occasional head popping up and down, along with the occasional whirling arm. A series of high frequency cracks echoes across the battlefield and suddenly two of your friends are down with rocks embedded in their heads and legs.
    That would be a very bad day.

    • @theprancingprussian

    • @alexanderbertisch1006

      In general, most people nowadays cant really imagine how crazy that would be. Even worse, imagine invading mountainous terrain, you hear a distant crack echoing through them mountains-someone slung a rock, you dont know who or where, all you know is that they did it. You now have to wait for the rock to hit you with so much force that it would easily kill you. The time period between the sound of the sonic crack and the impact of the stone have to be the most terrifying thing ever. Antiquity was metal.

    Well, that stone shot to the neck would have been fatal. Everything else would've been survivable. Looks like the lead bullets didn't do much more damage than the stones, but I imagine they would have done more damage than the stones versus bare flesh. Really interesting to see these hits versus light armor.

    I think it would be super cool if you mounted the dummy on a spring. Something that would match the rigidness of, let’s say, a human spine. Or maybe make a spine-like mount out of a car spring suspension. Actually go to the junkyard, get a leaf spring, sharpen on one end and you can stab it in the ground.

      Experienced sling users can fire the rock at about 90 meters per second, which is less than a third and almost a fourth of the speed of sound. The gunshot sound is just the sling, and i belive the tip does break the sound barrier.

    • @jedfra9172
      @jedfra9172 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My understanding is that the frayed end of the released half of the sling does indeed break the sound barrier in the same way a whip does. The reason they purposely leave that end frayed is to absorb that energy so that it doesn't injure the slinger?

      I would not be comfortable having this action imposed on me without responding with my service weapon. There was at least one Battle during the USA Civil War (which was not very civil) where Confederate soldiers armed with slings ambushed Union troops equipped with rifled muzzle loaders. I used to think the Confederates were insane. Not any more. Reload time on a rifle was 10 seconds plus aiming. With a sling perhaps 3 to 5 times the rate of fire. The slings might have had an advantage. Who can tell.

    • @jabrax
      @jabrax 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamescolton1085 In the right situation, rate of fire is much more important than range! As long as the slingers chose the terms of battle, they could well defeat rifled muzzle loaders! If range was the only thing that mattered infantry would be only snipers.

Sadly I developed tendinitis in my shoulder from slinging so much that I had to give it up. Damn! That must have hurt. This is the equivalent of getting shot while wearing a vest. I'm pretty sure the soldier could have ended up with fractures, or at the very least, a horrible bruise.
    That throat shot was scary

      @@aburoach9268 yeah but breast plate and full plate is different! full plate has more layer! i real full plate armor is not just the plate armor pieces! the gambeson + mostly chainmail and plate armor! so the shockwave is not a problem :S
      but still how simple and destructive weapon! and we all laughed about usopp ":D ok he still us e abit different sling...
      even that full plates ressisted against the bullets (in that time... in that time the gunpowder was weaker cause they use blackpowder and not smokeless gunpowder which is stronger/faster make bigger energy)

      @@gipsymelody1268 If you have a thick gambeson underneath your breast plate, then yeah, that could probably handle the blunt impact force, but if that lead projectile hits your Helmet or limb plates, You will undoubtedly get injured, you could get knocked out or have an injured limb with which you won't be able to fight properly in melee
      One thing is for sure, Horses will be dropping like flies, very vulnerable against sling projectiles
      the Spanish mention how one hit from an Aztec sling stone could immediately knockout a horse with it's shock impact, shatter swords, and leave troops paralyzed in shock on the ground from the hit, they would even pick up Aztec shields out of desperation which only provided limited protection by the way / No arrow or crossbow bolt achieves such devastating results that quickly
      and lead projectiles are even more devastating then stones

    And that is why, boys and girls, plate armor would stop ANYTHING that is not a gunpowder weapon. No matter what books, games and movies tell you nothing wielded by human hands can penetrate plate armor. Even the spike on the back of a warhammer or poleaxe. Even against crossbows they would most likely not penetrate. Man in full plate armor only died when someone would get to the seams or from an unlucky strike they would hit somewhere not protected by plate.

    so I imagine slingshot hits can break or crack ribs through armor not lethal but 100% pain train. I liked the neck shot probably lethal due to throat being squashed and target suffocation. Say did you played that game called plague tale? Protagonist there uses slingshot as the main weapon although gameplay reasons doesnt allow realistic ballistics to be implemented meaning 10 shots to helmeted soldier just makes him dizzied for a bit and his all good.
