Almost all of Joni's songs really happened -- she's quite literal. So much emotion, yet not one bit of emo / melodrama / sentimentality.

She paints beautiful images. I'm glad you played this version, the clarinet at the end is the perfect final brush stroke

My favorite part is when she says, "I heard his refrain as the signal changed" meaning she passed him by like all the rest of us. So human and so brilliant!!!

This is one of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs, she just really puts a piece of herself out there and even portrays the shame she felt for not stopping for a moment. Any of us who have known musicians know that the best don't always make it, the opportunity just never materializes. Even some who "made it" never made it to the extent that they should have (I cite Jeff Beck as one of these). Joni had plenty of fame but now, sadly few people know her music and her outstanding poetry. She is such an important figure in music history, but I fear that she will too soon be forgotten all together. Just a little bit of clarinet in the song because she would only hear a bit of his music each day in passing, so that is what we get in the song. Nothing in Joni's songs happens without thought and purpose, she is a musical genius. Thank you for this reaction.

From Joni's 3rd album, "Ladies of the Canyon" from 1970. It's written about a blind clarinet player that Joni would pass everyday on the streets of New York, and she was comparing her life to his. It caused some controversy as when found the clarinet player didn't appreciate her writing about him but would appreciated being hired to play instead.
Beautiful piano, strings, clarinet and vocals by Joni make this an amazing listen. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Michael. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Always got to me this song. Used to so amaze me when people walked past a busker without acknowledging them at all. Even to simply play music on the streets takes such a lot of practice and there are some beautiful souls out there playing their instruments. Harri, I could listen to you any day.

Hi Harri, no one writes better lyrics than Joni Mitchell. The song reminds me of some TH-cam videos I have watched of people nicely playing a free-access piano at an airport w/ people rushing by, oblivious..

In August of 1970 Joni Mitchell did a televised concert for the BBC in London, you can watch the full show on TH-cam. One of her best songs “Cactus Tree” is in it, and well worth reacting to.
What made her so great was she did almost everything herself. She played guitar and piano extremely well, she wrote her own music, she wrote her own lyrics, she did the paintings and artwork that appeared on her albums, she picked the musicians she wanted to play with.

Michael, I really enjoyed this submission and performance by Joni Mitchell. For anyone interested in discovering more about Joni's incredibly talented career and contributions to music, it would be a venture worth pursuing. Joni is often overlooked as one of the most influential singers and songwriters since her emergence in the 60s. Excellent review, Harri!

I had albums, cassettes, now CDs & I re-listen often. Sometimes I have an ugly cry at a song I've 'heard' for years due to a fresh struggle through a hard life lesson. Joni had mapped it out in 1972 or 1976 but I didn't have the life experience to appreciate it then. Then theres the music. That's where i first heard Jaco Pastorius & Wayne Shorter & Pat Metheny which led to further explorations. Last week I gave Turbulent Indigo several listens, esp the title song featuring the impeccable Wayne Shorter (RIP)

She certainly plays 'that piano'. It was a big surprise when this album came out, as until then very few fans knew that Joni even played the piano, as all her gigs featured her on guitar or dulcimer. Great live verrsion when Joni played at the BBC in 1970, and did some UK dates, including the IOW festival.

I love Joni Mitchell's music but on occasion she hits a high note that to my untrained ear sounds off-key. An example of this is at the end of this song. Now, after Harri's comment that he was disappointed that in her lyrics she decided not to join the musician, i am wondering if the "off-key" note she sang was meant to convey her missed chance at harmony.
