    She wrote the song on a plane while reading a book that mentioned that due to aviation humankind now knew clouds from both sides. She got inspired and wrote the lyrics, she then showed it to her then husband (who also was a songwriter and was often belittled by Joni's talent) and he laughed at it because she was just 23 and what was she doing talking about life and love at such a young age.

    Omg Joni ! There is so much. Her early work is so great. Her later work is too but for a different reason and a different time. But her early stuff is what affected us so profoundly. Please do more. But try to avoid just the commercial hits. River, A Case of You, Chelsea Morning, so so many.
    Talk about an artist....she was it. The 60’s and 70’s were a time of searching and self discovery. She wrote what she knew and observed. Her meta Ford are to die for. “And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses”. Joni was always in the car with me. For those moments of solitude. There are some great interviews with her as she’s grown through the years. A wise lady of human frailties and deep insights. Superbly talented. Thank you

  • @glenndespres5317
    @glenndespres5317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Think about this: Joni wanted to be an artist (brush and canvass) as her first choice. An early pregnancy changed that plan so she decided to write and perform songs. (Her album Blue speaks of this in some songs). Imagine having the talent to make that choice? And because she writes so truly from her reality, hearat and soul the listener is always deeply touched.
    This song is the ‘early folk’ version of Joni. As you say, people change and Joni surely did. You must dig in to follow that evolution into some really fine jazz.

    • @chris...9497
      @chris...9497 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read an interview with her about her start in writing her own material. When she first started performing in local coffeehouses, many of the other performers were territorial about the material, even though they were just covering other artists or older common works. They would block letting her perform if her repertoire included stuff they relied upon in their own performances. To get around that, to avoid stepping on toes, she began writing her own songs.

    She's a Canadian painter that got sidetracked into being a pop star. She had a tough life early on, survived polio as a child mostly by her determination to dance again, got married young, had a child she gave up for adoption, divorced, had lots of celebrity relationships. Musically she started as a folk singer, evolved into a singer/songwriter, wrote confessional sort of songs using her own guitar tunings, moved into pop and then reflected a jazz influence.
    Start with her album "Hits" which covers a lot of her singles. She had a run of 7 incredible albums starting with "Clouds" in 1969 and progressing through the 1976 "Hejira" which is more mature. They're all most-own, "Court and Spark" is her most accessible, "Blue" is very popular but I like the follow-up "For the Roses" to be even better. 'Chelsea Morning' is an upbeat song, the Clintons named their daughter after it. 'Big Yellow Taxi' is very popular and apparently the only single that charted in the UK. 'You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio' charted highest in Canada, very catchy, a bit country influenced. 'Help Me' and 'Free Man in Paris' are popular too.

    Sir Harri, Joni is my absolute favorite female songwriter and performer. She's one of a kind. She wrote and performs Woodstock on piano and then her friends Crosby Stills Nash and Young did the cover of Woodstock. Free Man in Paris, Coyote, Chelsea Morning. They are all perfect. She's our poet. Best channel on the Tube.

    Joni painted that album cover, by the way. She is an excellent painter and has painted many of her other album covers as well. Joni is amazing, I love her music. There is just so much good music that she has written and so many other artists who have done her music. Joni had the worst luck in love and many of her songs reflect that. Joni once said "I write music for my sadness, I paint for my joy." Thank you for a great reaction once again. Bob Marley said "Sooner or later everyone will hurt you, choose the ones who are worth the suffering." "Blue" is one of my favorite Joni songs. I have to admit that I grew up in a time when we all listened to radio as a part of life so we all were introduced to everything music. Then there was the ceremony of music albums, they were to be listened to from start to finish so you really got a feel for the artists and would hunger for more. Today, we pick a song and listen to it, we don't learn the heart of the writer or the singer we just learn a song. I am so grateful that I was able to experience music in the manner that I did. I learned my parent's music and my music so at this point I am familiar with about 100 years of great music. I hope that people wise up and go back to radio and the vast catalogs of excellent music that has been left for us.

      @@papercup2517 Yes, "Carey" will take you to Matala Greece, in 1970 where Joni spent time with the hippies who were living in the ancient cave ruins. At the time Greece was still under military rule following the '67 coup. This song is about Cary Raditz the firey cook she met on her first days there. She also refers to him in the song "California" ('the red red rogue'). This song is a journey into the 2 months Joni lived there and took refuge from her fans in Cary's cave.
      Mr. Raditz:
      "On April 19, 1970 - my 24th birthday - in my cave. Joni played it for me as a present. She also gave me 10 Mickey Mouse chocolate bars."

    You will absolutely love the journey into Joni's catalogue of songs, you've done it right starting early in her career. This was her really big breakthrough song, Joni wrote it, but before she released her own version on her 2nd album it had already become a hit for Judy Collins the previous year. It has since become a classic, recorded by many other well known artists, including Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, and Glen Campbell. Apart from her very poetic use of language, her use of dozens of open tunings on guitar is a key element of her song writing. She very rarely used standard guitar tuning, making it an ongoing puzzle for many years for those fans who were attempting to play her songs the way she did. Without that knowledge of the particular tuning for a given song, and the capo position used, you might get close with standard tuning but not have the same resonance and mood without those open ringing strings that Joni had.

    Joni is the pinnacle..."We love our lovin', but not like we love our freedom..." An amazing songwriter, singer, poet and human being. One of her greatest quotes from a recent interview with regard to love was something along the lines of : [after she passed 40] "I'm hip to romantic love [now]--it's just a trick of nature.."
