When Jimmy Dean first recorded the song, one line had to be changed. When you were a kid, the last line was, "At the bottom of the mine lies a big, big man, Big Bad John." Originally that line was "At the bottom of the mine lies one Hell of a man, Big, Bad John."
Did you know that Jimmy Dean recorded a sequel to "Big Bad John? It's titled "The Cajun Queen", about Big John's lady coming to rescue him. Give it a listen.
Psst! I'm 72 and listened to Jimmy Dean, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Roger Miller and even Red Sovine.

And Good Sir, I'm 20 yrs yer junior, well 16 really but : )... I know these gents and some of their musics; the 70's I must say, I was stuck on Roger Miller (had one record and I knew every song). Probably 1 45 of each of the others, then had 8-tracks and later cassettes. Country's my jam ... classic that is! : ) LOL -- "Name That Tune", I can of many many (and nearly the year!) Be Safe

Story of a big man with an even bigger heart. One of the great storytellers of the past was Johnny Horton who my mom and dad played when I was very young Now my sons 30 and 28 have his stuff on their playlists. Good music NEVER goes out of style I am so glad these guys with their covers can bring it to new generations ❣❣❣❣#jeffcastellucci #voiceplay #lowbass #bigbadjohn #redheadedneighbor #bestreactor

Glad you enjoyed Geoff's video! He's not only a really good singer, but quite a storyteller as well. He's even got a number of short stories and poems on his website that he narrates, and the few I've listened to have been really well done!
I'm going to recommend one of his videos that doesn't seem to get the attention I think it deserves - Till Then. It's a song that originated in WW2, and Geoff did it without having it recommended to him by any of his patrons - he just likes the song that much! Plus, there's an interesting story about the piano he plays in it - I'll be happy to tell you if you react to the video!

@Badger77722 I totally agree. That song ALWAYS brings some tears to my eyes, and they're not from sadness, it just touches something very deep in my soul... As does this song. Maybe I'm using the word in a weird way, but... Both of these songs talk to me of something I call "integrity". Different sides of it, maybe, but I'm not so sure. 🙂
And of course I second your suggestion 100%! :)

I heard this and 16 Tons all of my childhood. During the depression my grandparents lost their farm and my dad and my grandfather went and worked the coal mines. And they both survived but not everybody that they worked with did.
Between the dangers of the minds and the outright thievery of the company stores, those men and their families lead very very difficult lives. And with all that sadness I still love these songs.
He is not only an exceptional vocalist but a great storyteller. He does narrations on his channel but a lot of them are like Edgar Allen Poe and I just can’t listen to them before bedtime. And he’s got the perfect voice for a nice bedtime story.😠

That slight gasp after ‘there was only one left (gasp) down there to save’. It makes me shiver every time, thinking on these miners, probably friends and buddies of another, in their fight to get up, just unconsciously forgetting for a minute the one who has no close friends there, and then realising we got to get our hero. And then the rumble…

Holy SH!T. Got the nostalgia feels from that one!
The bass singers kinda fascinate me.
Every bit as impressive as the women who can sing in the whistle register.
There seems to varying reports on the inter webs of how low Geoff can actually go, some reporting B0, others at C1 to E1.
His highest note seems to be pegged at A5 with the annotation of that assessment doesn’t include falsetto.
Whichever is accurate that’s still a damn impressive range.

Geoff fan and Voiceplayer here. I hope I’m not out of line answering this. Some of those videos are older and Geoff has hit some record lows recently. That said there are technically three answers. Some consider it to be an A0 from Enemy where he briefly hit the note using growl technique. But because the note was so brief others consider the B0s in Halo and Valhalla calling to be his lowest sustained notes. Excluding extended techniques like growl and Subharmonic, Geoff’s lowest chest note is F1 in Whiskey in the Jar.

The song was written by the original singer named, Jimmy Dean (No relation to James). He wrote it back in 1960. In an interview he said that it was based on a story his uncle told him about a Big Black Man he worked with in the mines in the 1930's.

Although amped up a bit, the instrument used by The Harp Twins for their amazing version ( th-cam.com/video/KigLXLJMZJk/w-d-xo.html ) of Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" is an updated model of the instrument King David used circa 1000 B.C. to lay down the audio track for the Psalms.
