I have a pair of DALI Opticon 2 Mk2s for about a year now. This is my third pair of DALI speakers in 20 years. The Mk2s do an amazing disappearing act. I call them my ugly little black boxes that sing the most beautiful music. They disappear visually and sonically but can turn your listening room into a jazz club, concert hall or take you to outer space with good electronic music. Dim the lights in your room and you will be captivated by your music. I am never listening to the speakers but only the music they reproduce. With these speakers it is all about the sound not the looks. BTY I tilt the speakers back 12 degrees for better vertical dispersion. DALI says and you should aim the speakers straight ahead for the widest horizontal dispersion. No toe in for any DALI speaker. This is my third pair of DALI speakers and I believe them. These speakers deserve the best stands you can afford. DALI could easily charge 3 times as much and these would be worth it.
I absolutely loved this video. You spend a fair amount of of time talking about the music and recordings you used. Your knowledge and breadth of genres in music is impressive. The way you blend the descriptions of the recordings and how the speakers translate that into sound, what you could and couldn’t hear. Very nice speaker. And I have a great idea of what it would sound like just from the detail you included. Thanks for another great one! And of course you’ve turned me on to more than a few great records this way!
Great review! I own the Opticon 2 MK1. Mainly listening to Rock and live recordings and the MK1 are doing a great job imo. Greetings from Germany. Rock on!

Hi Ed, I'm listening to Swiss Movement as I write, excellent. After hearing Danny at GR criticize steel speaker parts & seeing the Dali technical video, SMC makes sense. The Dali Oberon 3 is their least expensive with SMC. The Audio Factory online sells refurbed Dali at a significant discount & is the official NAD recertified store, that's how I discovered them. I havn't purchased from them yet but online reviews are good. Happy Thanksgiving & keep up the good work!
@OldGuyHifi The Annie Lennox album Nostalgia you referenced is really good. God Bless the Child is very good, and New York State of Mind would be great to show off these speakers' ability for sound stage with the crowd.
The discussion in a couple of comments on this video made me consider how we define bass/midrange/treble lead me to thinking ... The 20Hz to 20kHz range of (ideal) human hearing covers slightly less than 10 octaves (as we now define octaves - which is based on how we tune our musical instruments). Every octave going up from 20Hz is a doubling of the frequency - so the bottom octave is 20-40Hz. I think of bass as the bottom 3 octaves, then midrange as the next 3 octave, and then treble as the next 3+ octaves. Bass: 20-40Hz 40-80Hz 80-160Hz Midrange: 160-320Hz 320-640Hz 640-1280Hz Treble: 1280-2560Hz 2560-5120Hz 5120-10.24kHz 10.24-20kHz+ This makes it easy to then define low bass, midbass, and upper bass, lower midrange, midrange, upper midrange, for each octave. Lower treble, mid-treble, and upper treble is also nicely defined. And having a way to place musical instruments in the spectrum makes it tangible to what we listen to: Lowest note on a grand piano is ~27Hz Lowest note on a 5-7 string electric bass guitar is ~32Hz Lowest note on a 4 string electric bass guitar is ~42Hz

Using dali opticon 1 mk1 and on a small sub its nice. My guess, is dali refined the treble a bit and boosted the mid bass abit on the mk2. Resulted ina bit less sensitivity but still easy to drive. The older opt. 1 actually has a bit higher sensitivity than claimed which works well for me.
I have always been curious about Dali speakers. I like their look. I have that recording by Annie Lennox...also like her version of Ladies of the Canyon.

Interesting that you say the midbass performance on that speaker is great and you reference 80- 200 Hz. In car audio, we referred this base range as mid where I've noticed in home Audio some referred to the subwoofer range as mid bass.
To me bass runs from 100Hz to about 50Hz and sub bass below 50Hz. Mid bass runs from about 100Hz to maybe 250Hz. Then it becomes the lower midrange. Does that make sense?

That's a big ask. I don't know your preferences. Off the top of my head: Advance Paris X-i75, a WiiM Ultra and an SMSL PO 100 Pro reclocker. That's less than $2k.
@@OldGuyHifi By my preferences do you mean in music? If so, I like all kinds of music, but mostly I like vocalists to seem like they're in the room with me. My preference in an audio system is one that sounds warm, rich, full bodied, transparent, holographic, and non-siblant and has a healthy amount of detail. After learning my preferences, do your recommendation still stand? Thx
Yes.
I don't understand why manufacturers don't use hemp fibre in their cones as its light and strong. These are really nice but way outside my budget. Love stand mount two ways.
I am a stand mount 2-way fan as well.
I am considering this Dali opticon 2 mk2 and KEF Q concerto meta.
Can I have your opinion?
Thank you.
I can't offer any advice. I have not reviewed the KEFs. Sorry.
Thanks.
