Per Hornady's specifications, the 250 gr. XTP is rated for 800 to 1600. At 836 fps, which if I remember was on your chrony, that is a super whimpy .45 Colt loading. I use Unique and shoot it at 1300 fps with great performance. A lot of factory loadings for .45 Colt are designed not to destroy early versions of the firearms that were chambered for it. Using loading data for Ruger loads from a variety of sources would get you .45 Colt ammo that is much better. Also, some companies like buffalo bore and others have much better loads for it in at least the 1000 fps or faster levels. My bear loads are a 300 gr. XTP Magnum, which is much harder to expand, but with my max Ruger load, it'll print the backstrap of the pistol in your palm for a while.
Yeah, a lot of the wimpy ones are cowboy loads designed for older firearms like you stated. The +p stuff can get crazy powerful. Might be recalling incorrectly, but I do remember seeing a +p from Buffalo Bore that was a little over 1k foot pounds for muzzle energy
@@exhaustus7437 depends on the company. I've seen a lot of whimpy ones, but buffalo bore and some others have some better power loads. I load +p+ for 38 special when used in the charter arms compact we have. Definitely more snappy than factory. 8)
Exactly what I was thinking on this video and the one before.. You can load that .45lc even a little hotter than a 44 magnum, like you said a lot of the long colt loadings are low powered cowboy loadings to shoot out of old week barreled cowboy 45 colt's , There are corbon 300gr 45lc+p that will push 1350fps and 1156ftlbs out of a 6in. barrel... 454 Casull JFN 300gn 1650ftps 1813ftlbs so the casull at an even 300gr 300fps more and like 657ftlbs more energy with a good deal more recoil also..
I always hoped that Taurus might make a raging judge version of the circuit judge one day. Imagine that 454 performance with an 18" barrel!! That would be fun.
Hell yeah, brother. Thank you for putting this kinda content out. God knows we need more real-world info on this stuff. I'm trying to put together some traditional bow info out. Hopefully it stops raining long enough for me to get some footage soon. Anyway, you have a good one. Lookin forward to the next episode.🤙🏾
The best way to maximize the performance of your .454 Casull is to hand load for it. These rigs run at 60,000 psi and if you can stand the recoil, you can build some very powerful loads for this caliber! I have found that you can get along a little easier with the Ruger Bisleys in this caliber when running the top performers. I use a 4 and 5/8ths model these days and run 335 grain Montana Bullet Works hard cast @ 1250 fps for a bear load and use that 250 Hornady XTP in .45 colt cases @ 1450 fps for a shooting load. I will say though, that I can't get to far from my old RSBH .44 magnum using the old Keith 250 grain hard cast bullets @ 1450 fps! This load and pistol have put a lot of meat on our table and has been a great long range shooter for fun over a lot of years! When I ran a Ruger SRH 7.5 inch in .454 Casull, I loaded that 250 grain XTP to 2,000 fps! Extreme power and the flattest shooting revolver I ever shot! :) Thanks for always bringing us a fun and interesting video to watch my friend! God Bless..

Milton again, this chest holster I bought to work in the woods with a chainsaw and or weed eater, mending fences. Works great, heavy it is. You are carrying a quite large gun.
I love that this model has six rounds and is non-ported. I dislike their other five-rounders and top ported short barrels to ensure flash and loss of velocity.
I have the 6.5" barrel version. My preferred shelf round is HSM Bear Load 325 grain. The RJM handles it nicely, with a "creamy" recoil that doesn't punish the hands or wrists. I believe that you would enjoy firing this particular revolver.
The holster’s for my 2 ragging judge’s were custom ordered as twin shoulder holsters made by craft holsters also hunter brand makes a right hand only for the raging judge also hope this helps

Not seen a video from you for quite a while. This first one immediately quite a treat! What a gun, not expecting you can fire slugs from that. Never seen before. I will now more regularly watch some more of your videos also from the past.
Man thats awesome! I remember when the Judge first came out and shooting one that a buddy of mine got. He hand loaded his .45 LC shells, and they packed a wallop compared to the store bought LC shells he brought so we could compare. Im surprised he didnt get a Raging Judge when they came out, but he said that with his hand loads, he gets almost as much power as a .454 for a lot cheaper price.
You need a Raging Hunter in 460 S&W magnum and use 454 Casull and all levels of 45 Colt. Even 45 Schofield and 45 Autorim can be used in it. If you can find those last two. It comes ported and is an awesome design hunting handgun.
The 45LC looks like a pussycat to shoot, the 454 doesn’t. The XTP’s love the speed and hold together well. Sweet revolver and nice test! Thanks for sharing WTW!
Thanks Adam. This Judge Magnum way more powerful than my Taurus Judge Defender Poly. My Judge a bit less $$ than yours. Good results!! I wish I could find the 2.5 inch slugs, have 3 good ,very expensive 45lc. The Casull is Beast. !!
This Taurus revolver is a new one? I thought you had one of these already. I'm a fan of the "Judge" series of firearms from Taurus. Great stuff, as usual. Stay safe brother.
@@Isoeso Yeah, I think I was confusing Adam with someone else but I really thought he had the same gun. Thanks for reaching out though, really appreciate it.
Hornady XTP bullets are awesome. They are used a lot in store bought loads and are available at a reasonable price for reloaders ( I don't know the price during this shortage though). They are used by target shooters because they are one of the most accurate bullets made. The also have a good ballistic coefficient (they slip through the air easily). They mushroom really well and aren't too fussy about what velocity they mushroom at. They will mushroom some at velocities that are really too low to expect mushrooming. I wish they were available at a bulk price. I think a lot of people would buy them 1000 at a time if the price was right. They are pretty much good at everything.
🤔 If two parallel 10” planks were screwed on edge to the table top, a rack to maintain the alignment of the jugs, a consistent orientation would result. This would maintain the linear alignment of the jugs upon impact and increase the odds of bullet recovery. 😎 Addendum: I own a Taurus judge and with the exception of it being finicky about what type of .410 it takes (if the fired casing sleeve is too long it stops cylinder rotation), I like the piece for its design criteria. I get that the S&W governor is a better revolver and is a six shot, but the judge is more affordable and being a 5 shot is more concealable. All that said, I feel that in your case, considering the power of the .410 “ and the .454 Casul that a 4-6” barrel or greater barrel length, probably in a standard chest rig for “bear country” would allow you to experience the more full potential of these high performance rounds in this revolver. The short barrel gives great muzzle blast, increasing the psychological effect, but at the expense of actual potential ballistic performance. I really like the fact that you actually test the loads as do other quality channels like Paul Harrell. It’s so easy to be an “arm chair expert” and merely render opinion, so it’s refreshing to see you take the time and expense to actually test the loads in front of a camera and chronograph 👍.
I think it would be cool to combine the clay block and milk jug tests. Put a clay block in from of the jugs. That way the bullet would already be expanded when it hits the jug (I think).
Never heard of this pistol. Glad you are the gate way to new guns lol 😂. I’ve had eyes on the S&W 460 for a while. It’s a 45LC 454C and 460. Bad part is cost.
I was fortunate enough to get the 460 XVR about 4 years ago. I wanted it to use for big game. I’m telling you it an absolute BEAST. Unbelievably flat shooter. It’s nice the it shoots 3 different rounds. Now I have 3 choices to go broke buying ammo. I must say, it’s incredibly loud being a 8 3/8” ported barrel though. Gotta wear electronic hearing protection even to hunt. You’ll regret shooting it without it. Best of luck on getting one. 👍
Because you can shoot both the 410 and 45 colt in The Judge, I have often wondered if I could shoot a 45 colt cartridge in my 410 shotgun whether it is a single barrel or my pump shotgun what you think
Great comparison of the two calibers. Just a little bit of personal experience I had with shooting both 45 L colt and 454 casull out of my Ruger Alaskan "snub-nose" revolver. The accuracy of the 454 (25 yards) is superior to the 45 L colt. At 25 yards the 454 would group anywhere from 3-4"s into a 5" diameter bullseye target, where the 45 L colt would barely hit some where on the 8 X 11 target which the 5" bullseye was on.
Bought a S&W 460 a number of years ago. Shoots the long colt, 454, and the Smith 460. Topped it with a Burris 2-7 scope and have one deer punching hand cannon! Do not forget your ear protection as it will hurt you BAD!
Wow what an awesome video my friend. That’s a beast of a gun wow. Keep those awesome videos coming. I just subbed to ur channel 👏🏻👊🏻from Denver Colorado
One day I'd really like to own one of those revolvers. That or maybe a Ruger super Blackhawk in 454. Not only can you have fun with the 454 rounds, if you reload your 45 Colt you can safely load it up to its real potential. It's always been amusing to me how little powder goes into a standard pressure 45 Colt cartridge compared to how much volume there is in the case. Then there's the fact that most commercially loaded 45 Colt is aimed at cowboy action shooters, and is loaded far below the safe maximums. Fun video!
Yeah. I like to think of 454 as basically a 45C magnum. Kinda like how 357 is just a slightly longer 38. The way it was explained to me is like you said people who buy 45c mainly want it for CAS where as otherwise most would get a 44 or 454. Also it was originally a black powder cartridge so it only needs like a 10th of the powder to reach the original pressure. Plus we all know no matter how many warnings they put on the box someone would try to use a high powered 45c in an antique gun and blow there hand off and sue the ammo kanufacturer.
@@darthsquidious215 no one that I know purchased their .45 Colt for cowboy action shooting. They purchased them because they offer a really good selection of factory loads for personal defense, target practice and hunting and the ammo is cheaper and more readily available than .44 magnum or .454 Casull.
Fun video, but you sure under played the 45LC... It should have been going faster so could expand the bullet properly. I used to live near the Hunting Shack Ammo Company in Montana. They used to reload all my 45LC ammo. One day I asked the guy at the counter (Been to long to remember his name) if they had a bear load, since I bow hunted near there and some grizzlies were starting to show up. They had a load in the recipe box for my 5.5" Ruger Blackhawk. It was a 300 gr hollow point traveling around 1350fps delivering ~1150Ft Lbs of energy... I had them make me a box of 50. WOW... In a cross draw holster it was perfect. I suspect you can get something similar from Buffalo Bore, Double Tap, HSM (Hunting Shack) and a couple others. Mean down range, but not to bad on the hand and highly accurate.

Wow, that's pretty extreme. What ammo were you using?
Nice video.
I have those same XTPs coming out of my 45 Colt Blackhawk noticeably faster than 800fps, more like 1150.
Wow. That gun makes me smile too. Maybe not a one gun solution for everything but it certainly is for many things lol.
Bought a S&W 460 a number of years ago. Shoots the long colt, 454, and the Smith 460. Topped it with a Burris 2-7 scope and have one deer punching hand cannon! Do not forget your ear protection as it will hurt you BAD!
Another fun video!! Thanks
I hot load my Marlin 1894 in 45colt. 300xtp at 23.5g of H110. Feels like shooting a 44mag
@@brentchristian719 That would be a nice stout load! Have you had a chance to measure the velocity you're getting from that one?
Keep up the good work 👍🏻when are you going to put your stuff on rumble?
No plans to go to Rumble. Idea is great, but it doesn't pay
Do the 50 BMG vs water jugs
Do the same test but with the clay squares. Totally dig your stuff!
I did that already I think. Maybe. I know I did ballistics gel
Great video & well worth waiting on.
GUN'S A MONSTER KILLER!!!
Thanks for watching Snowy!
