Fantastic review, Great Job!!!! This would be perfect for my wife and I as we live in a apartment complex and we have a small deck but no grills are allowed.
I just bought the newer model and did a test compared to my ThermoPro Instaread thermometer and it was identical I used a glass of ice water and they both read around 33-34 Farenheight.. Great video. I am wondering if the probe issue is a unit by unit issue. I have used the previous version of the Ninja XL indoor grill for over a year, and I have never had a problem with it. Next time I will compare with my $5 Walmart instant read thermometer which I use with the Ninja Speedi.
Nice video! I just wonder if it is because when you were testing the steak, you pushed your thermometer too deep and the tip was closer to the surface, that's why it was 55 degrees off other than 30?
I have the old non XL ninja foodi smart grill. I use the probe all the time for steaks and whatnot. Works great and I've verified with another probe. It is slower to register but not enough to matter, and its accurate. Note that because your cooking from both sides at once, your meat temp will go up twice as much in carryover. 10-15 up on a normal grill, becomes 30 degrees up when cooking with an air fryer. Another note, at least on my model, when your not cooking. or while your resting the meat, you can hold down the button for 3 seconds and it will show you the temp currently on the probe. Useful if you want to watch the temp go up during carryover.
Also you can test your probes without making food. Just heat up a bowl of water in the microwave. Put both probes in and compare. Heat the water some more to compare at a higher temp as well. I did have a bad wired probe, once. but it was a different common brand.
I don't have that grill but I did buy their 10Qt two drawer air fryer with probe (you guys have reviewed it) and MINE undercooked my single chicken breast. It said it was 170 degrees but my probe said it was 153 degrees. I was only a little bit disappointed by that because the unit works so well for everything else.
@@TheAverageKitchen yeah, I've only tried the built in probe on mine once. I've been doing a lot of frozen chicken breasts and you can't probe the frozen ones. I have the time down pat now so I just use my own instant read for verification. only takes around 12 minutes to cook one from frozen. it's really a great machine.
@@TheAverageKitchen I didn't have anything else to do so I just checked my probes using a glass of hot water from the sink. My standalone probe was 112.6 degrees and the Ninja said 111 degrees. I don't know why there is such a discrepancy once the probes are in the meat and cooking in the machine. super weird though.
Great review. I have my father my first generation grill, and i miss making my salmon and fries…so this review convinced me to buy the 2nd generation. Im from the states NYC and i still use ketchup never gets old. :-)
I think one of the problems with the probes is the cable I’d touching the grilling plates so it will be picking up the heat on that as well as the probe in the meat so the readings are way off
I have several Ninja devices with the built-in probe. What I normally do, given the known inaccuracies, is either set to Manual and then set degrees 15-20 degrees below my real target goal. I will then keep an eye on the device. When it gets within 10-degrees of set temp, I start checking with one of my other temp probes just to be on the safe side. I have no clue what the heck Ninja was thinking when they did the Chicken Preset for 170F. That in itself is overdone. Most of the US prices on these devices is only around $20 difference between non-probe vs BI-probe. Even given the inaccuracy of the BI probes, it is nice to have imo because it allows me to not have to hover as much.
Do you have a preference between the gen 1 or gen 2 foodie xl ? I can’t wait for the video that you spoke of comparing the 2 - I have to order now for a special discount - Love and appreciate your videos. Kaden
Great Review! I am looking for a new air fryer/crisper and this one looks really nice! My first question is will the lid t open all the way while sitting underneath upper cabinets? Is there enough room? Your cabinets in the video are just like mine and probably everybody else's so could you check this please?
I have similar cabinets, where this unit is used fairly regularly. No, the lid does not open all the way underneath unfortunately! You might get away with it if you pull it out closer to the edge though. Thanks for watching! - J
This is gonna be a great video! I look forward to the Gen 1 vs Gen 2 video as well, recently bought a gen 1 and came across the channel while researching that model. Love the content you guys put out!
Thanks for the support! I think they're comparable in that regard. The big advantage the Instant brings is the glass top to see your food, causing you to open the lid less often and therefore releasing less smoke. Hope this helps! - J
Just got this thing on sale! I have this and an instant pot duo so I am covered for pretty much everything! plan is to upgrade to the OL701 at some point but wanted this for grilling inside and it was on sale for $150 so totally worth it. Thank you guys for the awesome no BS reviews! What do you suggest for a cookbook for this thing besides the one that comes with it?
Is the air crisp with it just as good as using an air fryer? Trying to figure out if I need to buy a grill and air fryer separate or if this is just as good.
i wanna see the probegate video!! also the gen1 vs gen2 grill is super interesting to me. i am in the market for one of these and I would love to know the differences. my gut feeling is that due to supply chain stuff they are removing materials from the new units and the old version is better.
The vs video is shot. Will be uploaded soon. Stay tuned ! And we are def gonna shoot probe gate. My opinion, but which ever is less expensive, basically the exact same. Cheers. Marc
Great review, and love the Canadian accent lol. I grew up in Ontario, but moved back to the states for my teen years. Still a Maple Leafs fan tho. I just bought this, so getting smart watching your review. Also, ketchup on hotdogs is must. Nice to see you guys love Ketchup too
A suggestion for when using the probe: use your meat thermometer to check the temp before inserting the probe, that will establish a baseline of temperature difference, and set the cooker accordingly.
@@TheAverageKitchen great review! As this grill is super quick: The temp does rise quite a lot after removing the meat from the grill. Put both probes in and check the difference: I think it will be a lot less then 30.
This might seem weird, but for reasons, i sometimes have to cook on a desk instead of a kitchen counter. Does this make whatever surface its on super hot? It doesnt need to be perfectly cool, but if its going to make the desk i use "dangerously" hot, id like to know ahead of time.
Yeah shouldn't be an issue. Maybe watch any splatter from grease depending on what you're cooking, but the unit itself should be fine. Let us know how you like it! - J
I'm kind of a data geek, I just bought my DG551 and am going to start cooking today. However, I am trying to find specs for the different cooking functions and cannot find it. I'd love to know exactly how each function differs when it comes to the heating elements, fan, temperature range, etc. If anyone can find that information please comment..
You mentioned that the ninja without the probe might be about $80 cheaper …do you know what model number that is called? I can’t seem to find one, without the probe included.
@@TheAverageKitchen I just went ahead and ordered the newer ninja w/grill type without probe and ordered a bluetooth probe that will show on my phone. 😁. Thanks anyways.
I think dehydrating something like fish is perfectly acceptable to expect it to do. I’m surprised more aren’t made to be dehydrators because all you need is very low heat. Maybe it’s difficult to put low heat in idk how that works
@@TheAverageKitchen I know fisherman use it, we tend to have a ton of fish and need ways to cook it. I think you’re right about fruit though, but drying an entire fish overnight seems something I’m interested in at least. U guys do great vids I like the editing. I was cracking up in one vid tonight when he slow mo your voice it was pure gold
This is definitely the best air fryer/ grill that there is. After a couple of months, it is great for regular things, but I want to learn more. I know it will do tons more stuff. It will cook super fast, I'm trying to figure out the slower options. That might not sound right, but for most things I want to cook, and eat after a while, not right this minute. Of course, air frying is different, I am talking about the other options...
Ketchup on a hotdog/sausage is fine. My 67 yr old BF does it. I was wondering if you could make toast with this appliance. I need to replace my toaster oven and I know some people make toast in air fryers. Love your video!
my thermometer has been accurate almost every time, if not a few degrees off. I think twice it's been really off, But I didn't place the thermometer in a great spot the first time. Burgers really smoked up my house.
Currently considering purchasing one of these and just finished your video on the older model. I'm interested on whether it's worth waiting for this to be available in the UK, or just get the previous one. Looking forward to the shootout video.
Guys, you are awesome, I really liked your videos. Will you also do like a tips&tricks kinda videos specifically for indoor grills and airfryers? That would be great. (Maybe you do but I couldn't see in the channel.) By the way, for the probe, I saw some videos with the pro version (probably the probe is the same because it seems like a pretty standard thermocouple) and it was just consistent in the manual measurement mode. Maybe, It could be a good idea with side to side manual mode testing with the probe and thermometer you have. Anyway... For the FG551 vs. DG551, I couldn't see your new video but I wanna buy Dg551, and I really wonder if there is a down side of the 2nd gen. Because 2nd Gens are not always better than the 1st even manufacturers always claims so. :) Which version would you recommend? Also in the website they mention about FG550 and DG550 in owner's manuals. Do you know the difference of 550 and 551 codes? Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment! We've tossed around the idea of doing videos like that, so stay tuned! I don't know for the difference between the models. I just tried checking with no luck. It might be one model having a probe and one not? I've used both generations now and I would say all things being equal, go with the 2nd gen if for no other reason than a better user interface. That being said, if you find the 1st gen at a significantly lower cost, I wouldn't hesitate to go with that. Hope this helps! - J
@@TheAverageKitchen Yeah that was all I need as a comment. I found a good deal with just $10 difference, so, I will go for the 2nd gen after your comment. Thanks a lot and wish you guys a great success on the channel!👍
People that care about other people putting ketchup on hotdogs are the same people that will comment negatively about the beer you're drinking, also known as people you shouldn't be friends with. Ketchup and hotdogs are a match made in heaven. Hotdogs are great with a variety of condiments; my favorite is coleslaw dogs. It looks gross but I was brave and tried one once and was instantly hooked.
@@TheAverageKitchen I just had Peanut butter on a hamburger last weekend, so I don't doubt that its great on a hot dog too. peanut sauces are fantastic on meats.
I like your guyses shows like I said it's the average kitchen for the average person great job guys keep going I look forward to seeing more thank you Tim from Seattle keep cooking guys
@@TheAverageKitchen Sure why not? It would/could have been another example of clear evidence showing (or not) your assertion that the probe is inaccurate. Would'nt have taken much longer either...
Thank you very much for the videos, I've been thinking for a few days whether I should get the Ninja air fryer or the Indoor Grill but I think I'm going for the Ninja Speedi, which seems to be the most complete at the moment for my use. Regarding the probe it seems that it doesn't make much sense to get the more expensive one just for this feature if it fails so much, a pity because it is a very useful thing.
Great Videos, Ninja also has great customer service, I had the original XL, it malfunctioned after 3 years of daily use, I called and got through with no waiting... Not under warranty they still sent me a new unit for a small fee, ( unfortunately) the unit arrived damaged twice,) they are sending me for the 3rd time the new one DG551, they have been very helpful ... After watching your videos I can't wait to try my new one ..
Love the review, was really keen on buying the 1st gen after your review of it but held off and now I found this one, awesome! Can you try and get a response from Ninja when you do the video with the temperature probe to try and get to the bottom of the issue? I would buy the 2nd gen (w. probe) but with so many poor reviews of the performance of the probe I'm not sold on it. Another question: Was the 1st gen also named "DG551" just as this one (but this is "2nd gen")? Just so I make sure I buy the right (latest) generation, don't want to trust the product pictures since they can be wrong.
Hey. Thanks so much for the comment. I’ll try and break down your question. We have never reached out to ninja about the probe, but it appears to be a common theme. As for generations and models , that’s tricky. Depends on where in the world you are ordering from, and where you order from. We get super confused ourselves as their US and Canada website have so many models that all appear to be the same, we can’t figure out the differences. Hope this helps. Marc
Here in the states people have vastly different tastes in different regions and hotdogs are eating many different ways. Example here in Michigan the favorite is a coney dog, In Illinois people love the Chicago style. New York has the new York style and so on and so forth. There is a video here on youtube showing all the different ways people enjoy a dog across the states, but needles to say a lot of people enjoy a lil ketchup and mustard
@@TheAverageKitchen nice must be closer to the border? The more North you go in Michigan the more you find similarities with rural Canadians, if you are ever in the UP make sure to try a pasty
Got one of these. Cooked chicken legs, using the probe. Those werent too big, and no matter how you insert the probe, it will be way too close to either the outside surface of the leg or to the leg bone. End result - legs came out may be 1/3 under cooked. The probe reached the temp way too quickly (reading being affected by the probe's proximity to the bone or the outside surface). So, dont use the probe with smaller pieces of paultry/beef etc.
I'm in the US and I call BS on that ketchup thing. Ketchup is a mus (at least for me and almost pretty much everyone I know).! Along with mustard and relish and onions and chili if available.
Abt the steak & the ProbeGate. When using regular propane grill, I end up with med-rate steaks using grill at 400F, doing 4 minutes per side, for avg side steak. I use a Costco griddle plate inside of the grill - more thermal mass, better heat transfer & searing effect, MUCH easier to clean, no mess inside of the grill & on the grates. Highly recommended. The Ninja XL (which I too, now own), IIRC, gets the inside of the grill to 450F, on its default HIGH GRILL setting. So right there, 8m is bit too long for med-rare, for that size steak methinks. May be 6 minutes would get you the med-rare output. Admittedly, 6m is on short side, not leaving much room for error. So instead, it might make sense, to change the grill itself to MEDIUM heat, for cook time around 8m. None of it explains the 50F+ discrepancy that was observed when cooking the chicken breast and the steak in the video. May be the probe itself is hosed, bad/contaminated junction weld that retards the read-out.
Guess I'm getting the double-whammy then. Am (let's just say) WELL into adulthood + a life-long Chicago native. Tho I've gotten crap for it my entire life, esp living in Chicago.. to this day, if I eat a hot dog, it must have ONLY KETCHUP on it. My thoughts... I'm the only one who has to eat it. So I get to decide. :) Enjoy!
Having bought the xl pro version with has a proper electrically powered grill plate, which works very well, can't help but think this is a step backwards...
Could be wrong, but w/ the steak... looks like you put your temp probe ALL the way into the steak (so would end up way past center) hence the higher reading towards the ends. Sucks that it still tasted overdone tho. :(
If you truly want to compare the probe from ninja to your trusted one, don't take it out, push on 'manual' bottom for couple of seconds and ninja will display the current temperature. The internal temperature of chicken breast will still rise after taken off the grill.
😋Standard dog for me: Ketchup, Mustard, diced onions, pickle relish. BOUGIE dog would be: 🌭HILLSHIRE FARMS TURKEY SAUSAGE CHEDDAR DOGS! HAS TO have a slice of cheese wrapped around it (after grilling) with Ketchup, Mustard and Onion.
'Murican here: what kind of barbarian does *not* put ketchup on their hotdog?? jk, do what you like, but even though I don't really love ketchup, a hotdog is one of the few places I'd add it..
Well, I can tell you looking at the color of that steak it was not 170 degrees. As for the chicken, you pulled it off. At 1 seventy, you pulled the temperature probe out at 170. Not looking at the temperature immediately when you pull the probe out. You do understand when you're cooking that hot that fast? There is a 20 degree increase in carry over cooking temperature right.. Ask for the stake if you set the smart grill technology on. It pulls a rare steak off at a 103 degrees to account for carry over cooking
Hate the idea of this kind of appliance for burger patties, I want a flat top griddle or a cast pan, nice and flat and able to get a burger press down onto them to keep away shrinkage
Every bit of this video was great, except the part with the probe. This is not a fair comparison of probe accuracy, you should have realized that the minute you saw a 55 degrees temperature difference. A probe measures at the tip, so you should try to align the two. If you want to compare try to boil some water or heat up some cooking oil and judge the probes side by side. Probes famously work better on thicker cuts. You can get good results with this probe, but it takes some practice. The probe is not smart. It cannot intelligently tell you the state of your steak. It can only inform you of the temperature at the point you inserted it and Ninja should make a better effort at explaining this. As with any tool or device, using them for an extended period of time, is the only way to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. If you cooked 5 steaks back to back, the last will likely be a lot better than the first.
Never puncture or cut a sausage before serving. And I agree that ketchup is a child's condiment. I personally don't like red sugar water...I try not to judge. Worked on the road with a drummer who put ketchup on everything. I saw him eat apple pie a la mode and put ketchup on it. Vanilla ice cream and ketchup is gross to imagine tasting and an even worse visual...

Thanks for the tips! - J
We’ve never had any success with their probes being accurate. Marc
Awesome thanks for the comment. Marc
I think one of the problems with the probes is the cable I’d touching the grilling plates so it will be picking up the heat on that as well as the probe in the meat so the readings are way off
That’s a great point. And very possible !!

How do you get the bread to stay soft when making a grilled sandwich it gets too hard?
I haven't actually tried that yet. - J
Wow. Thanks for the amazing comment !!!! Marc
Thank you for these reviews! Which indoor grill controls smoke the best - the Instant Pot grill or the Ninja grill?
Thanks for the support! I think they're comparable in that regard. The big advantage the Instant brings is the glass top to see your food, causing you to open the lid less often and therefore releasing less smoke. Hope this helps! - J
You just saved me 200€, I was going to get this grill mainly for having the integrated thermometer but being that inaccurate it's useless. Thanks.

Just got this thing on sale! I have this and an instant pot duo so I am covered for pretty much everything! plan is to upgrade to the OL701 at some point but wanted this for grilling inside and it was on sale for $150 so totally worth it. Air crisp is definitely just air fryer. Different branding is all. Thanks for watching! - J
i wanna see the probegate video!! also the gen1 vs gen2 grill is super interesting to me. i am in the market for one of these and I would love to know the differences. my gut feeling is that due to supply chain stuff they are removing materials from the new units and the old version is better.

A suggestion for when using the probe: use your meat thermometer to check the temp before inserting the probe, that will establish a baseline of temperature difference, and set the cooker accordingly.
Good tip! Although you really shouldn't have to do that, assuming the probe worked correctly. - J
@@TheAverageKitchen great review! As this grill is super quick: The temp does rise quite a lot after removing the meat from the grill. Put both probes in and check the difference: I think it will be a lot less then 30.

Guys, you are awesome, I really liked your videos. Will you also do like a tips&tricks kinda videos specifically for indoor grills and airfryers? That would be great. (Maybe you do but I couldn't see in the channel.)
By the way, for the probe, I saw some videos with the pro version (probably the probe is the same because it seems like a pretty standard thermocouple) and it was just consistent in the manual measurement mode.

I don't know for the difference between the models. I just tried checking with no luck. It might be one model having a probe and one not? I've used both generations now and I would say all things being equal, go with the 2nd gen if for no other reason than a better user interface. That being said, if you find the 1st gen at a significantly lower cost, I wouldn't hesitate to go with that.

Can you try and get a response from Ninja when you do the video with the temperature probe to try and get to the bottom of the issue?
I would buy the 2nd gen (w. probe) but with so many poor reviews of the performance of the probe I'm not sold on it.

Was the 1st gen also named "DG551" just as this one (but this is "2nd gen")?
Just so I make sure I buy the right (latest) generation, don't want to trust the product pictures since they can be wrong.
Hey. Thanks so much for the comment. I’ll try and break down your question. We have never reached out to ninja about the probe, but it appears to be a common theme. As for generations and models , that’s tricky. Depends on where in the world you are ordering from, and where you order from.
Good to know ! Marc
I'm in the US and I call BS on that ketchup thing. Ketchup is a mus (at least for me and almost pretty much everyone I know).! Along with mustard and relish and onions and chili if available.
Well we're happy to hear that! Thanks for watching. - J
Lol. Thanks for the comment ! Marc
Guess I'm getting the double-whammy then. Am (let's just say) WELL into adulthood + a life-long Chicago native.
Thanks for the comment and the insight. Marc

Thanks very much for the insight and the comment. Unfortunately we’ve tested several ninja products with probes, they are never accurate. Cheers. Marc
