It's been 6 months since the 3080 launched and I am just starting to realize that 3080 doesn't refer to the name of the card but rather the year it will be in stock.
it's actually three R's if you count the fans. Which makes a lot of sense given this is basically a Reduced, Reused and even though the chip isn't recycled from the 5000 line (as there was't a 5800), it certainly feels like that because it's not even close to the 6800. Except on price
local stores in europe will post the 4 they have at 680€+ (before taxes) ... that's 6800xt MSRP so yeah :/ screw msrp! €dit: oh and another problem, the low supply in europe is also met by system-integraters who will reserve cards to be able to build PCs with them. So it's not just customers but also companies competing for those, what was igor suggesting, a couple thousand(?) units.
Yeah, it's kind of a shame that so many of this generation of cards were reviewed only factoring in the inflated prices of the time, makes trawling for new PC parts difficult when all the reviews are "doesn't matter, gonna be sold out or marked up"
I believe this card needs a review again in 2022. It's just got its price slashed and still offers great performance and even the AMD drivers don't bottleneck older systems as hard as NVidias.

To be fair, they never needed to be good... the last 20 years of 3d GPUs are littered with cards that weren't good even at the time. I feel like this point in time people need to let go of the hate of the AMD cards. The 6700XT is retailing at pretty much MSRP, it beats the 3060ti which retails for $100 more on average and comes close to the 3070, which is literally $250 more on average. NVIDIA cards are impossible to get and these cards are actually available and beating them in price pretty well.

Standards sinking like a bowling ball thrown into an ocean. It sucks, but I'll hold my money close to my chest for now. AMD and Nvidia can both suck it. I'm at the point where I'd even consider an intel GPU (shudders).

Just to clarify one small thing: When Steve says "It's fine", it's a code for "This review is pointless. Tech companies have created a situation, where the consumer will buy literally anything that remotely looks like a graphics card."
Consumer is too vague. Personally, I think it's all miners and scalpers. Mostly scalpers getting MSRP cards and then miners buying them from scalpers because they don't even care. I just want to upgrade my GPU. I got two PS5s for cheaper than some GPUs that I want.
@@James_Bee I have a R 9 fury sitting off to the side that I bought and had the option to get a second, since the one I have can’t be sold because I had it in my computer and the power supply burned two of the traces I wish I got the second one. I am just really glad I got a RX 580 for $180 from newegg as a replacement when prices were decent and it was on sale.
Why shouldn't the consumer be willing to buy any GPU at almost any price right now? What other point in time could you make money with your GPU? If a consumer isn't at least mining with their GPU part time, then they're throwing money away. So when you throw that into the equation, the only people getting screwed right now are the gamers who don't mine, but they're only screwing themselves. In other words, if you pay $100-200 over MSRP, and mine with your card, it's actually a better deal than buying at MSRP and not mining. If you don't want to mine, then yeah it's a bad time to buy a GPU. My only concern is not being able to find a GPU to begin with. I don't care about paying $100 more for it cuz I'll make that back in less than a month, and eventually the whole card will be paid for while I sleep.

I did some price/performance comparison and nothing really was able to convincingly beat 1060 3Gb in price/performance until 1650 Super showed up in 2019. And even then, it was only 20-25% improvement in price/performance. In 3 years. 1060 3Gb was a king.

Thanks for pointing out the lack of improvement in the price to performance metric. That's what's most disappointing with these 2 last generations of cards from AMD and Nvidia.

@Nick 2006, I wouldn't know I wasn't into pc gaming at the time. I was probably just trying to buy an overpriced playstation 3 or something. 2014? For Nvidia the gtx 900 series was cheaper than the gtx 700 series across the board and really good value. The only thing I remember people complaining about was the 970 with "3.5" GB of vram. And yeah 2018 with the 20 series was pretty meh and the beginning of the stagnation we are seeing now, the only thing they really over last gen was raytracing, but in price to performance there wasn't much gain. In 2019 AMD radeon tried to beat nvidia and released the radeon VII, which was a complete failure then the rx 5000 series which had good performance but terrible drivers. Since then? Paper launches, scalpers and stagnation... I would say anybody who complained in 2014 can go eat a bag of dicks, but anybody in 2018 was pretty much correct.

Literally one year later, I was luckily able to pick up the 6700 xt directly from AMD for the "unicorn MSRP" of $479. LOL! It's a good card, but there is no value compared to the previous generation. Unfortunately, the GPU market is still crazy and only recently started to decrease in price. I'm probably going to pass it to a friend who still needs a GPU, or finish and SFF build and sell it to a friend.
My biggest fear is that when everything "normalizes" scalpers are not gonna go away, im afraid they might've found a niche market that they can profit of to oblivion.
I just built systems for my kids and the 6700XT's were the best bang for the buck at 599$ with free shipping. It looks amazing with FSR 1.0. I am hoping FSR 2.0 will give it a significant boost.
what about a "stagnation" chart somehow analyzing the performance per dollar (based on MSRP or something "normalized") to compare products across generations?
When msrp has bee pure joke in resent years and pure fantasy in this year... so very hard to make! 2080ti was suposed to be $1000 gpu... in reality it was $1200+ gpu... 3070 was suposed to be $500 gpu.. in reality it is $1000+ gpu... 3060 was suposed to be $329 gpu... in reality $500 to $600 gpu... how can you make any price comparison... that would be extremely hard...
I think the best conclusion years later is, STOP BUYING brand new GPUs. Just wait a year or two and get 90% of the experience for 60% of the price. (And if you are a real champ just buy all your games at the same pace and you get the SAME experience as everyone else, and everything is cheaper.) FOMO is all you, you can stop it.

All in all, I feel lucky I bought my EVGA 1660 XC Black 6GB for like 350$ before the supply shortage. Managed to flash it with a EVGA 1660 XC Ultra BIOS to remove the power limits, and overclocked to 2100MHz core and a 500MHz memory OC, it still carries pretty much any 1440p workload @ 60FPS and stays below 85C... Looks like this gen is gonna be skipped for me... Bummer cause I wanted RTX, but not for 2K$...
Just bought one of these on Ebay for 300, still drastically cheaper than a 3060 but you get more for it. Was gonna wait for the Intel Arc, but I still would have spent more for equal performance, and would have been gambling on a first gen card.

The problem is that tech reviewers and the PC Master Race will only accept the latest and greatest. Everything else is junk. Not everyone needs to be able to play 200FPS RDR5 at 8K you know. Not every market condition is going to line up at the moment you want to buy... so either you participate in a fucked market or you don't.
Yeah, funny if people really think companies are making products for them. They don't, they only in for the money, they cut corners as much as they can, only fix problem that came to spotlight. That's how companies work, deal with it.
Had the "privilege" of being able to buy this card at MSR yesterday. Jesus christ. This reminds me how i spent 7 years with a GTX 660 and a i5 4430, i couldnt even play shit anymore at some point and just used it as web browsing. Thats crazy how some of us dont upgrade for years and just expect it to be enough for damn near a decade. Anyway, it should last you, if youre using it for 1080p, like… for most people prob 4 years if they really wanted to keep it around. For you? My guess is ypu’ll usenit on low settings so prob 6-7 years
My country(hungary) revealed the 6700XT prices...the cheapest modell is 2143 USD!!! (this is retail price not scalper) EU and especially my country is sick... good luck to buy one. :(
Idk all technicalities but these chips are produced on waivers. Each waiver has a failure rate. The failing chips are used in the cheaper models. So the chips are there, it doesn't really affect the production of the top tier cards. Unless they throw the failed ones away but that's destroying capital and from a business perspective not really advisable.
Fabricating different microprocessors on the same process doesn't really require any retooling, and generally different tier GPUs in the same generation are just from different performance bins rather than different designs anyway.
The idea is that you make a chip with a smaller die, so that you can make a lot more of them. The problem is that RT cores and infinity cache waste a lot of space, so the new die in the 6700xt isn't that much smaller than a 6900xt. RTX chips are also way bigger and more power hungry compared to previous generations thanks to all the RT and Tensor bloat. I would love if one of the companies came out with a smaller/simpler low-end GPU that could be made cheaply in massive quantities, but neither of them have much reason to do that right now. The margins are higher on the big GPUs. You have to build/ship and sell ten $150 GPUs to make up for one $1500 gpu

Just to clarify one small thing:
When Steve says "It's fine", it's a code for "This review is pointless.
Including drawings of graphics cards on ebay.

Thanks for pointing out the lack of improvement in the price to performance metric. That's what's most disappointing with these 2 last generations of cards from AMD and Nvidia.
Just shows how stupid consumers are. They would have a big power - the power not to buy anything above 500-750 which was high-end for many years and prices would drop at some point. Barely anyone needs a new gaming pc - they just want.
The price to performance for 30-series was MASSIVE compared to 20-series, but of course only when MSRP mattered.

@@TheVeratrix is it the same wafer/process?
