    I found this video very useful, but what would happen if the critical load didn't occur at the center of the beam? As in if you had a load distance a away from the left fixed support, and a distance b away from the right fixed support?

      Thank you for your comment. The plastic hinge forms at the point of maximum bending moment. If you draw the bending moment diagram for any scenario you will be able to identify where possible hinges can form. As you point out, they won't necessarily form in the center of a beam. Hope this helps!
