As far as I know, the Finnish D marking on M39s is actually to specify that the throat of the chamber has been opened up to accommodate the Finnish D-166 round as well as captured Soviet ammo. I've got a 1944 VKT M39 with the D marking as well, and have shot both Lapua D-166 hand loads and surplus 7.62x54r in it with no issues whatsoever.
My M39 is usually my first choice for target shooting, I really enjoy shooting those irons and I have confirmed 900yd hits. Mine is a 1944 VKT barrel on a 1909 Sestroryetsk receiver with a Sako stock. Its an Inter Ordnance import.
Far and away my favorite rifle detailed by one of the most informative guys on TH-cam. The history is as important as the shooting, if not more so. Thank you!

Mines a beautiful 1944 Sako as well, and has a unit disk embedded on the side of the stock, and evidently saw some service into the Cold War with a Finnish Karelian Coastal Artillery Unit. Even if it’s a Mosin, it’s hands down one of the smoothest milsurps I have which astounds me lol
Great video Misha. I have a post war refurb M39 and it's just fantastic. Great bolt, trigger, and bore. I have a lot of milsurps, and the M39 and K31 are pretty much neck and neck in the accuracy department. :)
recently picked up a 1941 dated VKT M39 built on a 1905 dated M91. it has the WW1 Austro-Hungarian capture mark on the receiver (AZF mark) and still has the imperial russian eagle on the receiver also. i took it apart to clean it and there was some dirt inside of it like that thing had not been cleaned since the war, but the bore is BEAUTIFUL. has the wartime stock with a Sako mark barely visible (probably from the wear in the elements) and another little cartouche next to it. probably the most historical gun i have now, knowing that at its core, that rifle has most likely served in both world wars
Reason they were exported to USA in 2000s, like 2007 was that they were, finally, removed from Finnish Defence Forces armory. No kidding. And there might still be some deep in some rock cave somewhere. Of course for a long they have been as SHTF weapons, only to be used when everything else would have been consumed. I would not be surprised if some 2 000 x M39s wait somewhere as backup for sniper rifles, possibly with some picatinny adapter design already done and tested, but not rolled to mass production :D
Back in the early teens of this century there was a guy who sold these online. You could get one with the plum colored Belgian barrel in all but new condition for around $400 dollars. At that time your average Soviet M91/30 could be had for around $80 to $150. I am a fool for not having taken advantage. I did purchase a beater grade Soviet Mosin with the accessory kit, but it sits in a cabinet unused because it wont shoot leas than 6MOA because of pitting and throat erosion.
I had a VKT that came from classicfirearms. It was the least expensive at $289 (cracked, bluing all gone, cosmoline) I traded it for a pistol. Still have a Sako that i picked up from checkpoint Charlie’s which is a doppelgänger to Misha’s Sako. Highly recommended because ammo is always going to be available and they are only going up in value.
Interesting video as always. I have one not D-marked. I finally got to fire it a few months back and the bolt was REALLY sticky. I was told by a Finn that the M39 was not intended for use with the 54r round. I've already reloaded about 100 rounds of 53r ammo, so I'll try that and see if that corrects the bolt issue.

My m44 had been collecting dust until I pulled down some surplus 148gr and swapped to hornady 123sst meant for my sks. I just shot the best group out of any mosin in my life and now I'm itching to get her back out. Good luck to you!

I have a M1891/59 that shoots 2" groups with it, no problem. If I could get similar results (or better) out of 123 grain handloads, I'm sure my shoulder would thank me. If you don't own a 91/59, they're dandy little carbines.

I've always wanted an m38 and 91/59 although m39 is the top of my list! And just so you know I used the same powder and charge in the surplus 148gr cases with the 123gr and I've got to tell ya they still kick!
You should be proactive and move everything to Rumble before they take you down permanently without notice. I also suggest not to wait for your follower to go to Rumble 1st because as long as your on you tube they won't.
Can you possibly help me track down an M39? My brother is looking for one. We can't be absolutely sure but it's most likely the rifle our grandfather carried as a Coastal Artillery rifleman in the Continuation War. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Not sure about today? but in the past among Finn collectors at least they were highly reguarded. The problem is relatively few survive today and are in the USA. With more M39s here, there will be more interest/attention.

might wanna watch your camera angles a little bit closer when on the table. You have a tendency to angle the camera lower than what you're trying to show us

My rifle is a 1941 SAKO that wasn't refurbished and saw HEAVY use. Despite its outward appearance my M39 is best functioning and most accurate Mosin.

Some of those "Russian receivers" were actually done in USA, for the Imperial Russia, before/during WW1.
