Please, Louise, keep the bloopers coming after your videos. I laughed a lot with them all, but this one helped to humour my day and I can't say I'm "convused" about it 🤣🤣
Thank you and I appreciate everything I see too , the withering rose does have beauty and grace as we all have a beautiful time and in my eyes we are withering and changing daily and life is beautiful when you appreciate all you see. I grow plants and am so thrilled with the beautiful beginning and know that I started those beautiful flowers and as it changes I appreciate every step and I loved the video. Thanks Louise I’m Sharon and I’m 67 years old and in Louisiana, USA I’m learning from you . I just love your videos. Have a great day.
I love this rose, and I look forward to your tutorial on Patreon whenever it’s available. The amount of beautiful work you produce for us is just amazing. Truly I think you are the gold standard of watercolor artists/teachers/on-line learning.
What a gorgeous, noble rose in the most beautiful of muted colors. How lucky are those of us who have access to your Patreon site, Louise. You are such a phenomenal teacher guiding us every step of the way. Thank you, thank you!❤️
Hello professor. Thank you so much for this beautiful roses. By watching you painting. My roses are coming to alive. All your roses are a little gift 🎁 to me. I enjoy it endlessly..we'll meet you in your next video. Cheers.
I love your tetorial on tones and watercolor, because these are frequent mistakes I make in watercolor and searched through all watercolor tetorials I can get and none have actually really gone through every detail like you have, thanx for helping me and I will look forward to your other tetorials as I need it desperately as a beginner ...
I love how you captured this dead rose. 💕Simply beautiful. I would have never thought of using the olive green in this painting. 😮 It definitely makes a difference in the painting. Thanks for sharing this tonal value video with us. I have learned quite a lot about this subject.
Beautiful painting Louise! I love the way you do tutorials, you repeat things several times so it really stinks in and also you repeat what colors you’re using and how water down they are at the moment. I really appreciate that!
All your vids are fun and great learning opportunities, but THIS one was particularly so. The ending was classic! Tonal value really IS super important to understand and grasp. I read that many beginner artists only achieve 85% of the darkest tonal values in their paintings- which basically means that all the other values would also be under achieved in relation. I thought the finished painting was gorgeous.
"Tonal videos in this value" brilliant. Thank you for this beautiful video, your rose is stunning. I admit I never have understood the difference between tone and colour.
I love your teaching style and explanation… I’m starting to understand layering and that paintings aren’t always done in a day. I’m not failing if I stop and continue the next day or another day…that is so liberating! I watched someone do a lifting technique with a tissue and I was horrified 😱 😆 but I can understand your discerning eye for light / dark..shadows and color, I have it too! All subjects are interesting and if they are not, make it so…tones can be made to be amazing….groundwork is where it’s at!🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️👍🏽Mia
Excellent explanation of tonal value! Thank you for your teachings. I really appreciate your explanation as well as the subject you painted. A lovely rose! Thank you
There is so much beauty in senescence and even death, as though you are hearing a long weary, melancholic sigh. I must say I was hoping to see you paint that gorgeous abstract shadow, but I can see how it would overwhelm the delicacy of the near dead rose. It would be interesting to see you paint it again, but with the shadow the main subject and the rose reduced to a soft suggestion. Lovely video, thank you.
Your "dead" rose reminds me I have a birthday next week :( .... But what are numbers anyway?! So I can't wait to paint this! THANKS SO MUCH for a wonderful lesson on tonal values, which I have been avoiding during my rookie year but am finally starting to understand, thanks to you!! Most of my confusion and questions about all the intracacies of watercolor were cleared up this past year thanks to your Patreon channel, which I urge EVERY BEGINNER watercolorist to join, as I consider you the best on TH-cam or anywhere on the subject, seriously!
Love your reference to puzzle pieces.. I do the same, and make people laugh when I call some of my detailed works “ paint by number”! It helps To ” let go” of the subject and think of shapes and tones just like you said. Love this one. It has so much light and depth and beauty. Going to dig out my olive green and play with it with your two other colours. Will really enjoy this tutorial when it is ready. Hope Dom is back to himself and NOT climbing ladders. Thanks for sharing and all the hard work you do. Saturday morning breakfast and Louise... nice way to start the day.
Louise this is a great lesson as we artists tend to get so caught up in the colors that we forget about how important the values are! You are such a wonderful teacher, and sometimes when I get frustrated with my painting I will watch one of your tutorials to see how you break it down as you’re working, not to mention that your voice calms my blood pressure 😜 and helps me to slow down! Thank you for that! 💕
I am so thankful to you for creating these videos on watercolor painting technique. I am getting back into painting after 30 years of focusing on other things in my life. My last painting classes were in high school and the teachers weren't that knowledgeable about watercolor painting techniques. It's amazing what we can learn on our own in the internet age. Thanks again - You are an amazing painter and I will continue to watch your videos! :-)
Louise, thank you for this. I love how you break down your process so that instead of showing how to paint a specific subject, you're teaching us techniques that are useful for painting any subject. There are varying opinions on when to add the darkest darks. There are some watercolor artists on TH-cam who advocate starting with lightest lights, then darkest darks, and then the in-between values. The curious thing I've noticed is that they almost always end up finding that the darks they added at the beginning were not dark enough and they have to darken them further. I'm not drawing any conclusions from that; it's just something interesting that I've noticed. I'm experimenting to see what works for me. Thanks again for your excellent instruction.
What a gorgeous rose. Can’t wait for this one. The contrast of the bright lights and deep shadows is what keeps me practicing! It’s so real when it’s done. Someday I’ll get it right!!!!
Exceptional watercolor tonal lesson ! Louise your artistic talents shows by transforming a rose fading beauty into a magnificent masterpiece! Very enlightening ! THANKS ! 💜
Gorgeous! I’m so appreciative of you sharing your knowledge of tonal values painstakingly slow, Louise. I’m just over a year on my watercolor journey and you’re right, I do struggle with this however, I do understand that tone is what keeps our paintings from looking flat. I know I’ll get it as time goes on. Thanks too, for sharing the length of time it took to complete this piece. It helps a lot. Blessings to you!
Thank you Louise for your clear teaching. I have been working on watercolors for a year, and have gotten nowhere. Now, things are starting to fall into place. I will join Patreon soon. e
Brilliant painting of the rose. When you were showing the bloopers talking about the light hitting the subject and then you did an eye roll 🙄. That mad me lol. I do that to myself too when I do something wrong. You are so funny. I'm convused 🤣🤣
Just beautiful! Thanks for the tonal lesson! I learn so much from your videos. Could you explain in future videos how you decide what parts of a painting is wet on dry or wet on wet? Thanks and blessings to you and your family! 🥰
Wonderful Louise! Explaining in terms we can understand the critical importance of values. Plus an up-close view of tones as beauty fades from each petal. The end result still beautiful! Thank you for sharing this process.
Your so Sweet! Thank you for the free tutorials. I have just been to your website to download the freebie and will look at your Patreon page after this. Beautiful tutorials, no background music YAY!
You're an excellent teacher, aside from an incredible artist! I was afraid of tackling layers but after listening to you, I think I can handle it! Thank you for your videos.
I think you must be psychic Louise! I have just picked one of my parrot tulips which is coming to it's end and was thinking of painting it as such - also have been considering doing the sunflower as a 'spent' one; so this video is just what I need - and how very beautiful it is, so pleased it will be on Patreon! Thank you for all the wonderful information, enjoy your weekend.
I'd drop more 💖💖💖 if I can do so. Thank you Louise for breaking down tonal values and everything else the way you do. Loving your very fine art and your humour, too! Subscribed right away and wondering Why your channel wasn't not recommended so much sooner !
This video was incredibly instructive for me. As a beginner, it will some time before I tackle this lovely painting tutorial in patreon, however I look forward to applying what I've learnt to my simpler efforts. You are such a gifted artist and teacher...thank you for sharing your gift! And your bloopers...too funny! I think you should have included the one of the light hitting you in the main video. It really was a great visual representation of what you were teaching too. Thank you (if I knew how to insert an emoji from my Surface pro keypad, I'd add a big smile face and heart here).
thank you so,so much for this beautiful and informative video.i would highly appreciate if you could make videos on the the water color wheel and the color chart.you are simply amazing.love you, take care, stay safe, stay healthy.
I was hooked after the first tutorial ( 3 garden leaves?) . Beautifully painted. This one is outstanding! But do you want to know why I’ve subscribed? ( & everyone must say this to you) ...... Louise, you are one very funny lady!! Please, I really hope this doesn’t offend you. Of course you are first and foremost an exceptionally talented artist, but if you were one half of a comedic duo, you’d be the straight guy. Do you play poker by any chance? I’ve only watched 2 videos and both had me laughing out loud at the end. Fabulous!!! Thanks so much. 🙏🙏🙏🤗
Thank you for this, and for all of your videos Louise! I’m looking forward to the Patreon video. Getting the tonal values correct is something I definitely struggle with. I have a tendency to want to blend too much and actually have to walk away to stop myself 🙂. One small ask - is it possible to include a small thumbnail of the photo you are painting from into one corner of the video? Personally I know it would help me as I’m watching you to understand better and learn why you make the choices you do in your painting. Thanks!
Please, Louise, keep the bloopers coming after your videos. I laughed a lot with them all, but this one helped to humour my day and I can't say I'm "convused" about it 🤣🤣
You have a wonderful ability as a teacher. Not everyone can do this.... thank you.
I love that you used a rose that was dead and faded. Your painting is just beautiful!
OMG, LOVE THE ROSE BUT THE BLOOPERS ARE TO DIE FOR!
Thank you and I appreciate everything I see too , the withering rose does have beauty and grace as we all have a beautiful time and in my eyes we are withering and changing daily and life is beautiful when you appreciate all you see. A special complement. Thank you very much Barb. 💕
I agree, whole-heartedly.
What a gorgeous, noble rose in the most beautiful of muted colors. How lucky are those of us who have access to your Patreon site, Louise. You are such a phenomenal teacher guiding us every step of the way. Thank you, thank you!❤️
You're very kind. Thank you Cindy. The feeling is mutual. All of you help me to keep learning and pushing myself. 💕
Hello professor. Thank you so much for this beautiful roses. By watching you painting. My roses are coming to alive. All your roses are a little gift 🎁 to me. I enjoy it endlessly..we'll meet you in your next video. Cheers.
Fantastic tutorial. You have possible the best teaching method I've come across on TH-cam. Clear step by step.
I love your tetorial on tones and watercolor, because these are frequent mistakes I make in watercolor and searched through all watercolor tetorials I can get and none have actually really gone through every detail like you have, thanx for helping me and I will look forward to your other tetorials as I need it desperately as a beginner ...
Like the way she paints the edges of the subjects
I love how you captured this dead rose. 💕Simply beautiful. I would have never thought of using the olive green in this painting. 😮 It definitely makes a difference in the painting. Thanks for sharing this tonal value video with us. I have learned quite a lot about this subject.

After using far too many superlatives in my comment I just send you my Gratitude and best wishes! 💜💜💜

Tonal values aside--what a very tricky color palette! Brilliant!
Thank you Donna.

Excellent tutorial! I know I've sometimes confused color with tonal value and this vid has definitely helped. Thanks for sharing, Louise, you rock!
Beautiful example of tonal value.
Beautiful Louise ! The colors are amazing. You made that rose come back to life. Miracle! Call the pope 😊
Lol- Thanks Suzanne. 💕
Louise you are an inspiration....whatever you paint.
Thank you Gwen. 💕
It. Is. So. Beautiful. My goodness.
I’m working on roses, but this video gave some really great pointers!
I’m learning so much from you! Thank you for the amazing way you teach. I love to watch the end of your videos! You’re so cute and adorable!!!!
This tutorial is great for showing how important it is to always ‘plan out’ your painting. 👍🌹

🌺 Thank you, Louise.
Such a beautiful picture! I really want to try more paintings like this once my skills improve. You are my favorite watercolor painter on TH-cam!
Roses are beautiful even as they fade. I keep them until the petals fall off then I sometimes keep the faded petals in a bowl! 🥀
Louise this is a great lesson as we artists tend to get so caught up in the colors that we forget about how important the values are! You have become my teacher - your videos are so detailed. Thanks and keep up your good work! Stay blessed!
So beautiful and pleasing to my eyes ❤
You explain things so well. Thank you.
Hubby took a photo of a dying rose years ago and I keep wanting to paint it. I’ll be digging it out again to have a look.
So gorgeous! I am so glad I stumbled on to your channel ❤️❤️❤️
