Thankful to the person who asked this question. I wanted to ask, but held off because I figured it is not fair to keep pressing Diane for watercolor questions when her channel is an oil painting channel. But these watercolor videos are priceless. You made my day Diane!
Actually, Lisa, it's not an oil painting channel. I like to think of it as an all-about-painting channel. It just so happens that many of the questions asked are better answered with oil techniques rather than other mediums.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction I only paint in acrylics and find the transition from "oil" analysis to "acrylic" practice really easy, with some small exceptions. For me, yes, it's an all-about-painting channel. :)
Wow!!! This QT was chuck full of information - pasty consistence (been there done that), varying lengths of value ranges and blotting your brush, etc. - thanks, Dianne!!
Diane you are the maestro! This is the best video on how to do a tonal range in watercolor that I've ever seen. I am amazed that I've never seen it done this way before. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent!
For me, this is your BEST video ever! Super helpful. Now, I know how to design some exercises to learn how to gain control over my values, which is critical. Thank you, Diane!
You are a very talented teacher and you passed on so many great tips that I had to take notes. I am going to swatch all of my colours in the way that you showed us and I can’t wait to dive into your other quick tips especially if you have one explaining warm and cool colours because I don’t know who to believe as people seem to have VERY different opinions. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us beginners 🌸
@millydaisy29 , opinions don't matter. What matters is how colors behave in the presence of one another, whether mixed together or adjacent to one another. That understanding is achieved by working with the color. Using the traditional color wheel as a guide is always a good idea.
Thanks for replying, Dianne. I just read today’s email from you regarding the two blues which is helping me to get my mind around colours and how they behave. You have such a deep knowledge in regards to art theory so I am looking forward to reading more of your Quick Tips. All the best 🌸
I love watching you balance the Antwerp blue, orange and purple to create the neutral. I am hoping to get to the point where I deliberately reach for the orange And the purple , not just the orange. I am using my color wheel to see that the Antwerp blue leans blue green so I know that more readily. Thanks Diane! You always boil it down sooooo beautifully!
Such a great helpful video Dianne. Thank you! One question: are you willing to share what watercolor colors are on your palette? I’d like to upgrade from my daughter’s “play set” of elementary school watercolors but don’t know what to buy. Maybe you have an older quick tip about what colors you use in watercolor? Many thanks for your generous sharing of all of your wisdom and experience!
No, regardless of the brand, in general you need to activate your watercolor so it will not be sticky or cake and flake off later. The beauty of watercolor is also in its transparency, which one obtains by adding water to the pigment. Within watercolor, specific colors are more or less transparent, semi transparent or opaque than others.
Could you please do an entire video dedicated to adding complimentary colors to darken tonal values? (i.e., beyond the few colors you've demo'd here where you've added their compliment) Please excuse if you've done this already, and I've missed the video. Thank you! BTW, this video has been EXTREMELY helpful. I was wondering how to darken a yellow beyond what's in the tube. And it's important to know that its value range is, quite simply, going to be limited. Learning, learning, learning.... thanks again.
We've done a number of Quick Tips about color. Go to th-cam.com/users/inthestudioartinstructionvideos and scroll down to find them all. The best way to darken yellow is with its complement purple.

Thank you! I’m grateful for these lessons showing how watercolor is its own beast in many ways.thank you for the technique tips!
You're welcome!
You are a very good art teacher Dianne. I hope you do more with watercolor.
Thank you, I will. The reason most of these are done in oils is because it is the best technique to use when showing a principle.
More, more watercolor. I bought several of your course lessons, but was using acrylic for 3 years. Recently switched to watercolor and loving it.
Watercolor is a delightful medium to work with. Enjoy the journey.

Thanks, Laura. All this stuff comes together the more we work with it in practice exercises rather than trying to learn while making paintings.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thanks for that solid advice. I’ll make certain to do the exercises.
Wonderful, wonderful explanation! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Thank you Dianne....much appreciated.

thanks for the beautiful video I was amazed really very nice congratulations ❤❤
Thanks for watching.
excellent video on watercolour
Thanks.
Is the stickiness brand specific? I understand each brand is formulated a little differently.

Ditto to Linda's comment. Watercolor is not to be used straight out of the tube. It must be activated with water to work.

Brilliant tutorial. Thanks 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Diane, how about a quick tip about dealing with the color shift in acrylic paint?
Barbara, it's the same as with oils. See Quick Tip 295.
T. VANN: Thank you this was very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
"...so don't anyone argue with me about that..." 😅😂🤣
😇
Thank you!! Very clear.
My pleasure.
Thank you so much!
You bet.
i haven't touched watercolors in years as I am poor at it so I'm reluctant. maybe I will try this.
Have fun with it.
Thank you very much
You bet.
I understand now!.
Great!
First time i use a watercolor and a realize before you start painting you need to add clear water
Yep! Water is your most important ingredient in watercolor painting. Without controlling the water, it will only act like oil or gouache.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction yeah i make a lot a mistake because of that my homework become mess 😅
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction can i ask ? If i only have one paintbrush can i use other materials like cotton buds ?
