He's 15 and going through an ''ironic sexism'' phase so cute interactions between us are thin on the ground 😅 we had plenty of cute interactions when we were younger though LOL. My youngest son was in hospital with pneumonia last month for two weeks, my eldest went to school everyday and stayed at a grandparents when we had to go to a specialist hospital 2 hours away. Im the youngest of my mum’s kids. 15 years younger than my sister and 10 years younger than my brother.
When I was 3 I thought my sister’s name was ‘Yeah-Yeah’ because that’s what everyone said to her. So I started calling her ‘Yeah-Yeah’ and she got me a teddy bear (I still have on my bed) called Yeah-Yeah Bear. Yes I’m a 26 year old man… if I call her Yeah-Yeah she responds with “What do you want now?” 😂 I’m going to share your Christmas playlist with her because she’s the Christmas fan. I’m more of a Halloween boy myself.
My brother lives and works in the area of the UK one of my favourite kids book series is set, The Famous Five by Enid Blyton, he works on a boat doing tours that go to those areas and he spent his day off showing me where they filmed the 90’s tv adaptation and because he knows all sorts of local history because of his job on the boat he told me so much about the area and the books. He also introduced me to Star Wars A New Hope which was cool of him.

It's also been theorized that Lilo and Nani's names come from the last reigning queen of Hawaii. Her name was Queen Liliuokalani, and their names come from LIL-iuokal-ANI for LILo and nANI respectively. The Queen wrote the song Aloha 'Oe as a farewell to Hawaii when it was colonized and she was dethroned and placed on house arrest in her palace, where she passed away. Nani sings Aloha 'Oe to Lilo on the hammock the night before Mr. Bubbles was to come take Lilo away.

Maybe this is just being an older brother but the more I've watched this movie the more I see just how much Nani had to give up. Not only did she also have to compartmentalize her own mourning and grief related to her parents passing but when you look around the room she has you can see things like her surfing trophies and how she seemingly was about to start on her own life as an athlete and now is a mother figure that barely has it together because she really doesn't know how to do things. Truly THE BEST sister story about mourning for me that Disney has ever produced.

My favorite part about this movie is that Bubbles is not a secondary antagonist. It happens so often that social workers are painted as the bad guy, but Bubbles genuinely wanted what was best for Lilo even if it meant taking her away. I also love how well this movie nails hawaiian culture mostly because the director lived there for years if I recall.

Yes! At 7:48 you’re right! She’s an islander treated like the outsider. I remember there was a whole Twitter thread about a year ago talking about how Lilo had a wall of pictures of tourists and that guy with the ice cream she took a pic of too. A lot of native Hawaiian’s said they remember being little kids and tourists would take pictures of them and act like they were props. So Lilo is switching that up😂 And the guy that made this movie recently spoke up about how this is a movie about sisters, that Frozen wasn’t the first to be a sister movie, which it kept getting credited as. This movie is often overlooked.

@@whitenoisereacts yup, a lot of people can be like that too in many cultures. Same with being a lighter Latino. My sister seems to be treated the way your mom was. I’m very dark and have native features but my sister came out really light and some people don’t consider her a “real Mexican”. But some people here in south Texas have told her she isn’t really American. Like in the movie Selena “We have to be more Mexican than the Mexicans and more American than the Americans, both at the same time! It's exhausting!”. Fitting in is hard when you look a certain way, even with your own family and culture. But yeah, I can definitely see tourists taking pics of Hawaiian children as if they were part of the scenery. A girl I personally knew in high school went to California on a band competition trip and got up in some black peoples faces to take pictures of them because she had never seen a black person. I grew up in rural south Texas with 78 Latino classmates and she was one of the 2 white classmates I had. No black students, Asians, any other cultures at all. She was really out of touch💀 I hadn’t met friends of other races until college but I knew how to act, she was just super sheltered. She’s definitely changed and grown up and is a really nice teacher now, but her reaction shocked me even then.

The reason Lilo gives Pudge a sandwich is as she believes controls the weather and her parents died in a storm so she thinks if gives the fish a sandwich then bad weather won’t happen to cause anyone else to lose someone.
Also if you look in the background of Nani's room you will not only see a Mulan posted, but many surfing trophies and she gave it all up to raise Lilo.
Which going into the next point when they first showed the film to test audiences they were confused thinking Nani was Lilo's mom so to clarify this they have the word "Sister" said many times throughout the film.

So an artstyle note, The background artists used a real watercolor backdrop instead of digital simulated watercolor backdrops. Also, Chris Sanders, the director made sure that the artists who drew the Hawaiian dance moves were strictly following the actual choreography of the movements due to the hawaiian heritage of the meaning of specific movements.

There's footage of them watching and sketching big group choreographies to his songs, and the dancers are dressed a lot like those in the final movie version (especially with the ti leaf skirts, very traditional hula kahiko). I don't *think* those dances were rotoscoped at all? I feel like they just did a lot of live studies from the dancers (but I could be misremembering that). I wonder if that documentary is on TH-cam? Searching for that guy's name (Ho'omalu I mean) and this movie might turn it up.

If you look it up, there's a deleted scene that deals with the racism Lilo deals with as a Hawaiian native in a tourism hotspot. One of the tourists actually calls her "a REAL native!" and takes a picture of her. Lilo, to an extent, fights back by taking her own pictures of fat tourists. You'll also notice that Nani looks at a lot of job opportunities that either deal directly with tourists (hotel) or rely on tourism to be successful (coffeeshop and lifeguarding). I don't want to assume, but I'm pretty sure the job she ends up getting at the general store belongs to another Hawaiian native.
Also, the climax of the movie originally had Jumba and Pleakly hijacking a passenger plane to rescue Lilo, instead of using their own spaceship. However, 9/11 happened, and they had to change it. Looking at the deleted scene, it was a warranted change.

Lilo manipulates the ignorant tourists into running away from the beach by tricking them into thinking that a tsunami is on the way, and as everybody's losing their minds, Cobra shows up, obviously calm as ever, and Lilo looks at him and says "if you lived here, you'd understand." Another perfect example of how Lilo is way more intelligent than what her age displays.

Another interesting change they did, was that early on they had a typical scrawny social worker, but they realized that Lilo would just steam roll him. So they came up with Cobra Bubbles as a the imposing wall of a ex-CIA social worker that Lilo couldn't break.
A cultural tidbit, Lilo (and Nani and David) was being ostracized due to the racism that the native Hawaiian people experience from the caucasian hued residents who often have more money and [stolen] land than the native people (it's a pretty ugly situation IRL) Mertle Evans, the ginger-haired girl is from a family who owns a resort in the tourist industry so there is a deep tension between Lilo and Mertle even if either of them don't know exactly why. (EDIT: I guess you might already know that since you have family from there.)
The story HAD to be located in Hawaii as it gave Stitch clear boundaries, so that he couldn't just simply cycle to New York City or the real San Francisco. Stitch and water don't mix, he'll drown.

There's a deleted scene that explicitly spells out why you got that feeling. That visitors in tourist heavy areas tend to exoticize non-white locals, making them feel out of place in their own home. Though, I feel they do a pretty great job conveying that throughout the film regardless of that scene being cut.
This movie is an absolute gem. It has a way of hitting you right in the back of the throat. Especially when Nani sings Aloha Oe, originally sung by Queen Lili'ukalani, the last monarch of Hawai'i about it's annexation to the US. I wonder how long Stitch had been alive before he was judged and going to be banished? When I think about it, a being that was likely in their toddler stage at best, his behavior seemed completely understandable. Just because he was born with a super computer type brain didn't mean he automatically knew how to socialize or anything. I think it's why he changed so quickly with Lilo too. He finally had someone taking the time to teach him even if Lilo is also obviously struggling to learn how to interact with others too.

There's something about the sense of gravity and weight in this movie. I don't know anything about animation, but when I think of this movie I think about the very stompy way Nani runs, and all the characters stocky heavy limbs, and when they hold Stitch you can tell he's super heavy for his size. I can't explain what it is about it, but everything feels very dense and fleshy.

Kauaʻi is my home island. Hanapēpē (the town it's set in/somewhat featured) has a mural now dedicated to the movie. When this movie came out & we found that out, many of us locals were interested to see how they would interpret our local lifestyle(s), culture, etc.
The story is beautiful & touching. It does get the jist of the concept of "Ohana". I can't take any of that away.
It never was supposed to be a true life depiction & it definitely was never meant to be social commentary about local/hawaiian life, as such it glosses over alot of things locals feel towards tourists & the tourist industry, etc. But you get some of it with Nani at her Luau job.
& Bubbles technically doesn't stick out. Most social workers are mainlanders/haoles & dress like that. You see it more on Oʻahu, Maui & Big Isle.

23:27 i havent seen anyone comment this yet but the song nani sings is hugely symbolic of whats happening to nani and lilo. Aloha oe was written and sung by hawaiis last monarch and translates to "farewell to thee" and was about how she was taken from her homeland when hawaii was colonized by the usa and forced to be a state.

On the subject of the giant red space ship that Jumba chases Gantu with in the finale, the reason it has jet turbines is because originally the sequence featured Stitch hijacking a passenger jet from Honolulu airport, and using that to chase Gantu. And the mountains they chase him through, were originally buildings. The sequence was almost completely finished, and can be found online pretty easily (search '747 sequence'). But right around when the movie was supposed to come out, 9/11 happened. So they were forced to go back and completely redo the entire sequence. To save time, they designed Jumba's ship to be very similar to the passenger jet, so they could reuse as much animation of the main characters inside the ship as possible. They had to trim some shots out, since they couldn't repurpose them. But most of the sequence was salvaged.
Some of the cut scenes include Pleakley on a telephone talking to the airline about luggage, Pleakley with the emergency oxygen mask on, and Stitch & Jumba doing this big countdown before Stitch launches himself out the emergency exit door.
Definitely recommend looking it up. It's a piece of the film's history that I don't think Disney want's to acknowledge anymore, but it very clearly involved a ton of work to make, only for it to be scrapped and repurposed because of an unfortunate event that was completely beyond the film crew's control.

    This movie is definitely underrated
I remember watching the advertisements and different stuff on zoog Disney. They talked a lot about the style of animation and choir used to sing the main song.
This movie is probably tue most accurate representation of normal people Disney has ever done. Two normal siblings who are dealing with a very real situation while also having to deal with this alien that they end up with. I like how it’s not really making anybody the villain. It’s just people with different perspectives on a situation.
Mr Bubbles is just doing his job. He cares about Lilo’s wellbeing, and he knows that Nani is doing what she can, but sometimes “all you can do” still isn’t enough.
The professor isn’t really a villain. He just created this creature and he’s tasked with getting it back. A villain would’ve gotten rid of Pleakly and taken off.

I'm so happy you reacted to this movie as it is probably my favorite Disney movie of all time!! Since you asked for some funny/cute stories with siblings, I'll have you know I am the eldest of 5 siblings, so I like to say I have had a hand in raising all of them. Therefore, I have a story for each of them. *A lot of oversharing below*
My first sibling (who I've mentioned a few times in comments, also named James, currently 18; he watched The Blair Witch Project with me) put up with so much bossiness from me when we were growing up. When I was 7 and he was 5, I enjoyed playing dress-up and he would be so patient as I put him in Disney princess dresses and put kid makeup on him. We have several photos of him posing with me in a sparkly blue dress (Little Mermaid) wearing a giant sun hat and a pair of tights over his head so the legs could be twisted together to look like a braid.
My second sibling (my first sister, who I mentioned in my comment on Pan's Labyrinth, currently 15) is whip-smart and very sassy. I wondered out loud the other day if Amazon delivery was having a worker shortage because the past few packages had been delivered with the local mail service. She piped up "a lot of things have been having shortages...like Katherine." For reference I am 5'2" and she's 5'5".
My third sibling (my second sister, currently 12) loves to do everything with me but is also extremely modest and hates it when people around her don't dress to her standards. We were going to the pool yesterday and I was walking around in my swimsuit (a one-piece with a pretty low neckline) and a pair of shorts. Before we left the house, she came downstairs with a bundle of clothes in her arms, threw them at me, and said "PUT A SHIRT ON!" It turned out she had gone through my room and got every single shirt I owned. I thought it was hilarious, but Mom was mad and made her put everything back.
My youngest sibling is 10 years younger than me and has reached the "I am right about everything" stage...also known as the "sucks to be you" stage. I tried to do a flip off of the diving board yesterday (I'm not very acrobatic) and I landed on my stomach. When I pulled myself out of the pool he was standing along the side, hands on his hips. He gestured at my body, which was bright red from the impact, and said "sucks to be you, Katherine." He then got in trouble with the lifeguard because he tried to run away from me...because I may have threatened to put him in a headlock. He was told to sit out of the pool for 30 minutes because he then argued with the lifeguard about the running (he claimed he wasn't actually running, but speed-walking). Mom was not impressed.

So here's your daily fun fact. the name "Lilo" can be translated as "Lost". So the name Lilo and Stitch can literally be interpreted to mean "Lost and Stitched back together". This symbolises Stitch's role as the one who helps save this struggling family.
Also someone's probably already mentioned this - but the reason Lilo obsessively gives Pudge the fish sandwiches is because she thinks he controls the weather, and her parents died in a storm. She's trying to appease the weather "god" so that it never happens again. Which just makes it so sad.
Also as an older sister (who also kinda had to fill that role of parent, but not as literally and for very different reasons), the relationship is spot on. They really nail that sisterly dynamic lol. That's exactly what it's like.

I also loved that Lilo related to stich in that they are not bad but the situation they were given is sometimes hard to handle so they act out. Lilo gave stich more grace cause she knows how it feels to be alienated. Lilo, Nani, and Stitch are the most loving complex characters and make a great family unit.

So as an adult I find the scene where Lilo freaks out of the sandwich hilarious. Mostly because as a kid you think it makes sense not to feed a fish tuna, but in reality it wouldn't have been a problem. If you know nature you know most fish are omnivorous aka eat both plants and meat. On top of that most fish have no qualms with eating their own kind (At least the none poisonous ones) so Pudge probably would have actually liked the tuna sandwich if we're being honest. lol XD
Also a fun detail is the fact Jumba recognized Elvis' music. I'm pretty sure it's in reference to the conspiracy theory that Elvis is an alien or was abducted by aliens rather an actually being dead. XD

The bizarre thing was that when this movie first came out there was VERY LITTLE Stitch merchandise! I was an adult, and me and my friends were looking for it, and you could find hardly ANY. I think the popularity (and positive critical reception) took Disney by surprise, they weren't expecting it to be a big hit, so they hadn't prepared the kind of merchandise and tie-in juggernaut that they usually do. Of course, they did rectify that later.

Bubbles was assigned to their case before Stitch crash landed, so it's unlikely. Bubbles comes to do a social services check, and later that night Stich crashes to Earth, the next day he's adopted. That night Nani loses her job, and the next morning Bubbles meets Stitch

At the start, I think part of why all the aliens are disgusted by Stitch is because he is actually very different to their genetic makeup. Even though everyone looks weird to us since they are all aliens, the species of aliens shown in that society are all mostly inspired by marine life, whereas Stitch is visually more like a marsupial (koala), not a marine creature. Even their spaceships are definitely designed with marine or water-loving plants and animals in mind. Stitch really goes against the grain of the accepted and liked aesthetic in their society.

I came here to say the exact same thing. Also, it's important to keep in mind that Stitch's only instinct is to be as destructive as possible to civilization, therefore it's impossible for him to ever be a part of civilized society.

Do you know that the actress who plays the role of Lilo is the same actress who played Samara in The Ring?

I saw this movie the summer before 5th grade. My 5th grade teacher that year was obsessed with the movie, she had already seen it 5 times in theaters (including once while on vacation in Hawaii) and decorated our classroom with Lilo and Stitch posters. So this movie heavily reminds me of 5th grade.

2:57 Jumba's explanation of Stitch already paying off. That is a brilliant way to works past dna targeting.

I feel like there's good reasoning behind this being set in Hawaii. It's an island so stitch can't get too far, and its technically a part of America so cobra bubbles being CIA and being there makes sense

So what you're seeing for the background texture, is watercolor paint. The creator wanted it to be bright and colorful like a children's book. Because that was his original idea for Stitch. In the 80's he came up with Stitch as an idea, and toyed with it for quite some time before bringing it to the big screen.

Lilo and Stitch is my all time favorite Disney movie and I’m not ashamed to admit but the ending picture of Stitch being added onto Lilo’s photo of her, Nani and her parents never fails to make me cry. Fun fact that this movie is based on a book that one of the directors Chris Sanders wrote. I’m not sure if the book got released but it was an idea he had for a long time plus he also voiced Stitch too!
These two directors would work together to make How to Train Your Dragon which is why Toothless looks A LOT like Stitch ❤

Lilo and Stitch has always felt to me more like a Don Bluth movie than a Disney movie. Does that make sense? I can't really articulate why.

    If Stitch was a Pokemon:
    Type: Dark/Ground
Ability: Beserk-Attack stats increase after health is less than half.
Move Set: Crunch (Dark), Stomp (Ground), Seismic Toss (Fighting), and Cut (Normal).
