      Fun facts:
-The cast is mostly made of Broadway singers.
      - A lot of mannerism of Belle- like flipping the loose hair over her ear- is based on mannerisms of the actual voice actor
      - Be Our Guest, in the original script, was supposed to be sung when Maurice entered the castle. But, the writers did not want this huge song to be sung for a side character so they saved it for Belle.
      - the signs in the woods that Maurice looks at actually name different places and streets of the studios
      - Tale as old as time was written in a different key than what the actress that place Mrs. Potts sang in the past. She was originally against singing it but tried it out and did incredible.
      - The gargoyles you see on the castle throughout the movie are original designs for the beast
      - When recording Something There- the voice actor that played the beast had a cold so they had the actress that plays Belle his part “New and a bit alarming, who’d have ever thought that this could be”

Belle actually doesn't have Stockholm Syndrome, contrary to popular belief. She only warms to the Beast when he shows a warmer side, and makes it clear that she will not follow his orders. He also willingly lets her go to Maurice.

Belle never once tries to “fix” or “save” him, she has NO problem calling him on his crap behavior, and she doesn’t start liking him until AFTER he genuinely begins to change.
There is no Stockholm Syndrome here.

I love the importance of color in this film. Belle is the only character that wears blue in the village. Gaston wears red which suggests anger and arrogance. The Beast’s cape first starts as maroon/red, and then as he falls for Belle he starts wearing more blues, suggesting their compatibility (esp the fact that they are both outsiders and love to read).

The importance of the cape in that scene is that it is a covering. He still wears red in the scene but the blue cape is trying to cover it up. It’s symbolic of the fact that he is trying to trick Belle into thinking he and her are perfect and that he cares and will save her father. So the symbolic blue and red idea still holds up. The blue cape was a cover and didn’t actually change the red underneath.

I absolutely LOVE how you guys recognized Beast’s childishness and awkwardness because it really does add to his complexity. Its very subtly mentioned and hinted at in the movie but Beast really was only a child when he was cursed and so a lot of people miss that detail. In the monologue the narrator states that the rose will “bloom until his 21st year” and during ‘Be Our Guest’ Lumiere sings a line saying that they’ve been cursed for 10 years meaning Beast would have been only 11 when he was turned. From 11 to 21 he had interacted with basically no one and hadn’t developed any social skills from when he was a young spoilt child. The only people he was around were his servants who had known him since he was a child and just like you guys said they knew he wouldn’t do anything to them because he’s basically just like a spoilt angry child who is scared and mad at the world. I think that detail really helps to appreciate his childish qualities such as sulking when she's cleaning his wounds and how excited he is when showing her the library! I have to confess I’m usually a silent viewer but I love your reactions and had to comment on this one because this is my favorite Disney movie and this is the best reaction to it that I have seen!

Gaston is mean and foolish, but he's something the townspeople can understand - he's strong, talented at useful, physical pursuits, charismatic, and good-looking l. These are admirable traits in a place where everyone spends much of their time doing hard, practical work. They don't have time to read and dream about things that they have little chance of doing. And after a long day that lasts from dawn to dusk, they want to unwind by chilling out, drinking, socializing, and resting.
Remember, the prince has been missing for years, so it's possible they all pretty much forgot about him once the curse fell upon the castle.
So, why wouldn't they listen to the guy they know and admire?

Well that does come through when he’s human again, his voice when he’s beast was done by mixing his voice with real panthers and lion growls. 28:52 when I was younger it never clicked for me why the Beast was so very depressed and defeated, even with the attacking mob. Only much later would I realize that the mob arriving so soon after Belle left, and holding *the mirror* as well, must have made it seem like Belle herself sent the mob after him, which would of course be devastating to him. In my mind the fact that he regains his strength/will the moment he sees her call out to stop *Gaston* from hurting *him* makes it even more likely that was his thought process :( (also it kinda makes a lot more sense to me than "oh my love left *on good terms*, let me just lay down to die now" )

    • @stephw1702

I also wonder if it had to do with what little time was left before the curse was final. Then as you said what's worse is seeing this mob arrive holding the mirror meaning all of it was for nothing.

I think Belle being something of an outcast is often misunderstood. Women reading at this time wasn’t an issue, in fact it was encouraged. She’s seen as odd because of her love of fantasy and her desire for more than what the townsfolk think is proper for a girl to expect out of life.

one of the cool things about belle is that she is a static character, not a dynamic character, which is fairly uncommon for main characters. she remains the same throughout the story, does not have any growing or unlearning a believed lie to do, but she doesn't at all feel like a mary sue or annoying in any way really (she still has flaws/makes mistakes, wherein she deliberately went to the one place she was told not to go in the castle, and she showed the town the beast in the mirror which caused the angry mob, both of which are largely what helps humanize her, but otherwise she is a very kind and mature person from the beginning). overall her personality never changes and she never needed to unlearn a lie she believed, or learn any particular lesson in the story. she was already willing to look past outward appearances, which is basically the main moral of the story.
it's the beast who is the dynamic character (one of the very few disney princes of the classics who had an actual fleshed out personality _and_ wasn't a perfect prince charming). it's the beast who needed to work past his temper and his self deprecation (how could she love me, i'm a hideous beast) and ironic inability to see more worth than outer beauty. but he works past that throughout the film.
idk just pretty cool distinction imo, not something you usually see. and in fact, i would say that because of that, the movie is almost more about the beast than belle, even. maybe this is the first ever disney prince movie and we just never realized it 😳lmao. anyway, enjoyed the reaction as usual. looking forward to the next!

A couple things I wanted to point out I learned are:
    1. Belle and Beast are the only ones who wear Blue and to help Belle stand out in a crowd. Plus Beast and Gaston both start wearing red and both have blue eyes making the audience question which is the hero or villain, but only Beast changes to Blue while Gaston stays in Red.
    2. When the spell was done to the castle it not only turned the people who lived there into objects, but brought the objects of the castle to life (coat rack, suits of armor, dishes etc) so it wasn't as though the Beast had 10,000 people living there that were all turned into objects.
Other things I wanted to state include:
The prince was turned into a Beast at the age of ten.
The voice of Miss Potts is Angela Lansbury who you will remember as the Grand Duchess in Anastasia and she sang the title song in one take.
The animation at the end when Belle and Adam are dancing as it zooms out is the reused animation from the end dance from Sleeping Beauty.

It doesn't make sense that he was turned at the age of ten because that would mean that Chip was born a cup. If you look at the portrait that's ripped up in the west wing, it's obviously not a child's portrait and the stained glass in the beginning shows an adult. What makes more sense is that time stopped when the curse was set.

It was close to happening by the beginning of the film, hense why Beast only wears pants and the cape, and why he walks on all fours. The stage play expands this plot point and includes a sweet scene in the library where Beast admits he has forgotten how to read, then later excitedly echos Belle's love for fantasy as a way to forget where he is.

This movie is an absolute masterpiece, and by far my favorite Disney movie. It's got everything. One thing I think that really sets Belle apart is that the screenplay was written by a woman (who was incidentally also the first woman to have written an animated feature, and she also co-write The Lion King). I read an article with her where she listed a few of the initial decisions she vetoed and rewrote because they were reductive and took away Belle's agency. Belle is such a different princess than those before, and influenced those since, and that's one of the main reasons.
Another thing I find so interesting about this movie is that despite Belle being the focus character, it's the Beast's story. From the beginning of the movie until the end, Belle's character didn't change much at all. From the outset she was independent, confident, sure of herself, and didn't care what people thought of her. It was the Beast who had a transformation (literal and figurative).

This will always be my favourite classical Disney movie. Belle, just like Cinderella, is often misunderstood as being weak or unfeminist. Belle is intelligent and one of her main character traits is that she forms her own opinions about things regardless of what's popular. She's doing her thing and just calmly refuses to be put down by the villagers for it. Her character in a way acts like a mirror for Adam(Beast) allowing him to properly see for the first time how his behaviour really is affecting both himself and people around him. He's probably going to keep being somewhat of a dickish brat on occasion for the rest of his life but their personalities are so well matched that she can deal with that in a healthy way. This also shows that in relationships we don't have to be perfect humans, it's enough to be well matched and willing to work on it.

Unfortunately Howard passed before finishing Aladdin, which Tim Rice came in to assist with (fun fact Tim Rice actually came in to write new songs for the Beauty and the Beast live action film), and before Beauty and the Beast was released. If you watch all the way through the ending credits there is an absolutely beautiful dedication to Howard that reads, “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful.”

The Stockholm Syndrome thing only came about from an old Buzzfeed post and, true to form, the internet masses just read it and thought, "Yeah!" and that was that. She stays of her own volition to protect her father, but she takes none of the Beast's bullshit. And when she finally does get scared and fed up, she just leaves! What does she and the Beast have in common? (The part about both being book nerds was really cool, bc as a prince ofc he'd be well educated even at a young age) Where are his parents? Why do the servants not resent him for basically making everyone get cursed bc of his arrogance? They developed every one of these points well without taking anything essencial about the original one. In my opinion, the only mistakes were Belle's casting (I like Emma, but I think they could've found a more charming and better singer for the role) and toning down on the expressions. I'm so glad you guys keyed in on Belle's compassion and patience in this movie. These traits are what really define her character (especially in relation to Beast and Gaston) and what makes her such an amazing role model for young girls.
It's the main reason the live-action remake frustrates me to no end. Because this kind, compassionate, patient young woman was suddenly turned into a deceitful, mistrusting, rude young woman who took offence to EVERYTHING and made sure everyone knew it. Her entire character was changed for the sake of percieved feminist strength, and it completely undermines the whole story because of it. Her and the Beast have NO chemistry in the remake, and I blame that in large part on the new Belle's personality. The whole point of the story was that Beast needed to learn to control his temper and be more kind and patient - things only a kind and patient person could teach him. New Belle was not those things. Rather, she had similar, if not the exact same problems as the Beast - Temperamental, illogical stubbornness and the seeming need to insult others they feel superior to. (In New Belle's case it was more passive aggressive insults, but she was directly insulting a couple of times. Old Belle would NEVER.)
It's almost like they wanted to make them more similar for the sake of making the romance more "believable", when the original story's very premise was based on them being OPPOSITES. The Beauty and the Beast. They aren't the same, but they don't need to be in order to fall in love. That was the whole point, and it upsets me so much that they thought changing her personality so drastically would be a good idea.

It was hard to make him look like a villain and a hero at the same time. He had to be animalistic and terrifying, but also human and warm and comforting. The animators had to take countless field trips to study different animals and come up with a good combination.
Also, I would love to see your reactions to the live action version! I personally think they did a good job. Either way, would be cool to hear your opinions and comparisons

I will disagree. The only thing about the live action I liked was Gaston's moments. Not trying to start a fight, but as someone who does love longer movies and going into character development, I preferred Mulan (with its many many flaws) and Aladdin because they tried to put some originality in them.

Your point that the writers struck a difficult balance with Belle's character is a good observation. She was head strong, intelligent, and tough, but also still feminine, vulnerable, and compassionate. It's not always necessary to make a female character a warrior/physically strong for them to be a strong complex female character. I think Belle is a pretty good example of that.

Fun Fact: the actor that played the fairy godmother's son/the prince in the second Shrek Movie was originally considered for the role of Gaston. The casting director/producers turned him down though because they felt he didn't come off as "narcissistic enough" or too gentle/nice. He remembered that, and took it into consideration when voicing his character in Shrek.

14:13 I actually agree. I think the only difference between the two is that Gusgon shows traits of a narcissist. He doesn't love Belle, he sees her as a trophy. Where as the Beast was a spoiled teenage Prince that needs to learn how to be compassionate, humbled and selfless. I like that small detail

YAYYY! BATB is my all-time fave Disney movie and Belle's my fave Disney character and princess - I always get chills during the Transformation sequence and it's also why I really miss hand-drawn animation nowadays! Btw, small animation tidbit that I noticed after watching behind the scenes on the movie, during the scene when the Beast is talking w/ Lumiere and Mrs. Potts when waiting for Belle to come to dinner, the animators added a pillow for Mrs. Potts to jump down safely from the fireplace mantel w/o shattering - I had never noticed it until the directors mentioned it and I just love the detail and thought that went into this movie as a result! :)

  • @gracemon2oe

I like how at 14:15 you guys start the comparison of The Beast’s perception of Belle vs Gaston and how he’s SO self-aware even self-conscious whereas Gaston is completely oblivious to his own shit. Insecurity v narcissism. And I think this is getting at what Belle says later “He’s not the monster Gaston, YOU are.” It’s very true and the whole point of the movie, obvi, a lot like the Quasimodo/Frollo juxtaposition works. But it’s interesting to think about how the reason the Beast is a beast is bc he used to be a Gaston. So like… many different ways to answer the question, “What makes a beast, metaphorically and also in the story, literally?” What made him this way in the first place? There’s a lot of circular narrative and symbolism in here, it’s awesome.

  • @chuckrothans7535

@White Noise Reacts so originally in this movie Gaston was actually supposed to survive the fall, an then getting eaten alive by the same wolves from earlier 🐺 but the studio thought that would have been to dark of a death to feature in a kids movie at the time. However the idea of having a villain falling down from a high place to get torn apart and eaten alive would later be pitched for a later Disney movie. An that movie was the lion king 🦁

  • @randomfish18

I like how they made Belle to have the perfect balance of galant hero and female sensitivity. She can carry herself with authoritative strength while maintaining a feminine gentleness. She is moral, intelligent, adventurous, self-assured and nurturing. I think that's a major reason why this movie is so unique and memorable; Belle is the one Disney princess that best encapsulates what it is to be a woman. She's the kind of woman that young girls should strive to become and that young boys should plan to pursue.

I was terrified of this movie as a little girl because of Beast (fun fact: his name is Adam. It is never said, but it has been confirmed his name is Adam). Seeing this "monster" with a temper, always angry and screaming and yelling and being mean was scary to little 3 year old me. I didn't actually watch it until I was 14 after playing Kingdom Hearts 2 and musted up some bravery. I did still close my eyes every time angry Beast was on screen, but I got braver whenever I watched the movie. Now, I really like watching it! My mom and I even went to go see it when movie theaters were showing it in 3D in 2011 I think.
