@kevinmiller6380 Let me lay it out for you: The process of getting Lou Ferrigno into the Incredible Hulk took 30 minutes to apply the makeup on him and took 15 minutes for Ferrigno to take off. Let me tell you the step-by-step process of it Step 1 - They used hair clips that touched his forehead and clipped it back Step 2 - They made a Hulk-like forehead from latex and used spirit gum to stick the Hulk-like forehead to his own head Step 3 - They made a Hulk-like nose made of the same material as the forehead, used spirit gum to stick it onto his nose Step 4 - They applied green paint onto his face and the rest of his body: neck, chest, stomach, arms, forearms, armpits, hands, legs, calves, ankles and feet (maybe, possibly) Step 5 - They made Hulk-like eyebrows and attached them with spirit gum to his own eyebrows Step 6- The made a wig for him out of hair from yaks, dyed it green and spirit gummed it to his head Step 7 - He was told to wear green eye contacts to simulate the Hulk's green eyes. But there's only one little problem, the contact lenses at that time were made of glass, they were not very comfortable onto his eyes, 15 minutes after wearing them he took most of his time to take them off and then wear them again Just like that, Voi La! You got retired bodybuilder champion Lou Ferrigno as the embodiment of rage, The Incredible Hulk!
A friend of mine had a dad who was retired from the Chicago Bears football team and he said he worked out with Lou Ferrigno and said Mr. Ferrigno told him after shooting the first episode of the Hulk he didn't want to wait around to take off the make up and drove home in full Hulk costume, scaring the heck out of everyone who saw him driving home. Many, many years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Lou make a special appearance in Kansas City at Worlds of Fun. The room was filled mostly with kids, but the funny part was the first row was all local body builders there to see Big Louie! When Lou walked out on stage, took his shirt off and hit his first pose, the place went crazy!
I remember that Mr Rogers episode where he visited Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno on the set. I recall that Mr. Rogers spoke with Bill first, then Bill called Lou over. I was like “Noooooo!” as Ferrigno walked over in full Hulk makeup. The Hulk scared the jeebies out of me. Some 30 years later, I got to meet Lou at a Comic Con. He was very nice and signed an autograph for me.
Another kid who was scared by The Hulk, but got to meet him as an adult. Lou Ferrigno impressed me with both his size and demeanor when I met him. He towered over me at six-foot-fiive, and still had a great physique when he was in his fifties. He smiled widely when I told him he used to scare the living crap out of me as a kid. Not just his appearance, but the whole transformation thing was terrifying! Upon meeting the man, however, you could feel that he was a sweet and gentle guy under the monster makeup.
Bill Bixby said that the contact lenses he was made to wear for "green eye" change were very uncomfortable and so in later seasons they reused earlier scenes when change happened.
I keep seeing it written that the make up on Lou was partly to bridge the gap between his face and Bill Bixby’s, supposedly to make them look more similar. I never thought Lou as the hulk looked anything like Bill as David and I still can’t see it, myself.
That's very true, but fellow bodybuilder and later professional wrestler Ric Drasin (who starred as 'The Demi Hulk' in the two part episode 'Prometheus') DID look like a cross between Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno when in full wig and make-up. So he was perfectly cast.
I remember seeing this on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, when he and Mr. McFeely visited the set of the show. Talk about having your mind blown as a kid.
I bet Big Louie doesn't miss sitting in the makeup chair and having all of the green grease paint smeared on him on a daily basis, not to mention him having to wear those hard contact lenses he had to use. That was the late bodybulder Ric Drasin, who did all of Bill's full body shots as 'The Demi Hulk' for the two part episode 'Prometheus'. Drasin was 6'1 tall and weighed 220lbs at the time, whereas Bill was a mere 5'9 and 140lbs. Lou, on the other hand, was 6'5 tall and weighed a whopping 275lbs. However, the close ups for those scenes were all filmed by Bixby himself.
During a scene of the Incredible Hulk filmed in the desert, the heat was so intense, that Lou's green paint actually separated into its blue and yellow components as he sweated.
That would be a scene in the feature length episode 'Married' from season two that you are describing, where Mariette Hartley's terminally ill character puts David Banner under hypnosis, as she is trying to teach him ways to mentally block his transformations, but he ends up transforming anyway. For that dream sequence, both Bill and Lou were filmed in the desert and shows the Hulk breaking out of a reinforced steel cage and chasing after Banner. It's one of the very best episodes of the series and was scripted by none other than writer, producer and director Kenneth Johnson himself
Lou was a contestant on The Apprentice. He came across as very emotional and a bit paranoid, so I'm not necessarily surprised that he was rough on his make-up artists. I'd have gotten cranky, too! I was obsessed with this show. I can still recall the intense feeling of anticipation I had, sitting on the floor in our living room, just as the pilot was about to start.
Another great video! So, Lou did a Q & A at the Summercon here in Puyallup, Wa. in 2021. He told about an incident where he and the make-up guy, didn't say who, had been on set ALL DAY and when filming was done, they were just too tired to deal with taking off the make-up, soooooo....it was late at night, so yes it was dark out. Lou is driving down the Interstate with all this green make-up on and some random guy comes up beside him, FREAKS out, swerves onto the side of the road, ALMOST has an accident! Lou never did that again! We all had a good laugh about that. He also mentioned the contacts REALLY bothered his eyes and he couldn't wear them for long periods of time.

The process used for Lou's character made the character more real to look at on film than the current approach. The."in camera process that they used worked well. The CGI stuff that is used today just looks bad. It's like looking at a cartoon.
Bixby hated the makeup as wel when he had to put on the green for those quick shots of him changing. They paid Lou great money for this $30 grand per episode. Awesome money back then, specially when he had no kibes except for king of the beach episode. Lou is great..👍🏻💯 rip Bixby 🙏🏻 he eas great too
I agree. I wish the movie Hulk's would use a real person perhaps in conjunction with cgi, but not a fully cgi monster like the way they did with the Thing in the Fantastic Four movie. He wore a Thing suit and then they used cgi to make it look a little better.
I much prefer the wig and make-up that Lou wore in the original 1977 'Pilot' film. That was easily his best Hulk look in my own humble opinion. I just wish that they had kept it for the entire series run, but apparently the studio executives were very concerned that he would scare the millions of young kids who were watching the show and so they toned it down shortly afterwards.
STOP LYING TO YOURSELF CGI HULK LOOKS WAY BETTER COMPARED TO THAT HORRIBLE GREEN WIG AND MAKE-UP FERRIGNO'S HULK WORE HE LOOKED NOTHING LIKE THE HULK FROM THE COMICS.
I met Big Lou at San Diego Comic Con in 2007. I literally bumped into him as I was walked backwards from a display. I heard this deep voice say, "Excuse me", and I turned around and it was him! I shook his hand and he had a booth set up with his autograph and a book for sale. I got a signed copy for only $20 (those were the days). I told him in our short conversation that he used to scare me when I was a kid as The Hulk. I'll never forget the knowing smirk he had when I told him that. He knew he was perfect playing the role. He apparently went through hell with the makeup and the contacts. Another thing that he recalled in the book was the "Hulk shoes" that he wore to protect his feet. They're easier to notice now on a big high definition TV screen, but sometimes Lou wore these things that looked like ballet shoes. In the early episodes it looks like he sometimes had slip-on sneakers spraypainted green. In the 'Terror In Times Square" episode, they're especially noticeable. He said he weighed close to 300 pounds at the time and couldn't stand on his bare feet for long periods of time. Yes, the Incredible Hulk hated being barefooted! Bill Bixby also apparently hated being filmed shirtless, but nevertheless signed up to play David Banner!
I did not know that about Bill Bixby. He should have gotten Lou to give him some training tips to build up some muscle for those scenes. I know he had to be skinny to be Banner, but he could have still been skinny and kind of ripped.
I know I would have wanted to be in reasonable shape if I was being filmed shirtless all the time. I'm not talking bodybuilding shape, but just a little definition in my biceps and chest. It's funny, I'm the same age as Bixby was when The Hulk show ended production. I think my arms are bigger than his. Bixby was like, in no shape at all. Not fat, not skinny, just... nothing. I'm sure he was self-conscious about it.
@@kevinmiller6380I can't imagine anyone else in the roles. I've heard rumors CBS initially wanted Larry Hagman for David Banner, but Bill Bixby was Ken Johnson's first and only choice. Richard Kiel was actually filmed as The Hulk. A strange decision, since he was not muscular. Arnold Schwarzenegger was apparently turned down for being too short at 5 foot-ten, but sure didn't lack the physicality.

As a child who had far above average strength, almost freakish! Combined with the level of aggression and desire to fight, which I got in a lot of trouble for. I learned early on that the real power of the Incredible Hulk can only naturally manifest globally and beyond, is by having the Incredible Hulk go green, environmentally. Because global pollution has diminished quality of life worldwide. To the point where today's people are living and dying off yielding an using the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the dawn of creation, only getting worse with each and every breath. And this would easily be adaptable because of the Incredible Hulk's relaxed state which is a scientist. If these aspects would have been implemented today's people would know what a real hero consist of and how even though we are not created equal, we all do have a equal opportunity in improving upon in maintaining the quality of life in a manner that makes each and every moment physically, mentally, financially ans spiritually beneficial and rewarding. Such a missed opportunity is going to be hard to compensate and go beyond for all those years of missed opportunity which are still occurring because superheroes are content with people living and dying off to the lowest standards of quality resulting in a diminished quality of life. Because superheroes are not demonstrating to our youngest people why it is so important to learn your body's capabilities and limitations being able to fully engage with all of the body senses to their extreme limits in the most efficient way that is humanly possible. Thus becoming physically fit, mentally sound and spiritually balanced being able to express physical freedom! Which is key in a person being able to constantly consistently live up to the pleasure, potential and responsibility of femininity and masculinity. For only at this level of body awareness does one actually naturally have the self-control, discipline, loyalty, devotion and confidence in the way of playful determination that all children instinctively have during their peak grown years of physical, mental, social and emotional development.
The reason why writer, producer and director Kenneth Johnson refused to have The Hulk speak, was that he knew that the character would be much more believable to a TV audience if his vocabulary was strictly limited to a couple of growls. The Hulk speaking worked just fine for the comics (which I collected avidly for many years and I still have them all to this day), but it would've looked way too silly for a live action TV series.
@@scifiguy26 No, I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you there, as it would still come across as rather silly and juvenile to most TV viewers. Similarly, it would've looked equally crazy if Bixby's Banner talked to himself a lot of the time. They obviously do that in the comics to show what he's thinking, but a different approach was clearly needed for the TV adaption.
How can I get the book for my 37 years of collecting the incredible hulk. From the sledgemaster 3 times making professional powerlifting history in 2022.
Why did he have to sit around for so long? Didn't they know that they could film the shots out of order and just get all the Hulk shots done, then film the rest?
That's not as easy as one would assume. It works only in the studio setting, where the lighting is more carefully controlled and the sets are more confined. The trouble is the Hulk TV series utilized extensive outdoor shooting and everything depended on the sun's setting and weather conditions.
@@timepoet77 OK yeah, I get that, but that still doesn't explain why he would have to sit around for that long in full paint. Seeing as the entire process didn't even take a hour.
@@righty-o3585, it's because of the enormous amount of time moving heavy cameras, lighting rigs, electrical equipment, loading new reels of film, sound checks and adjustments, and even a few script changes.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was turned down for the part of the Hulk cause he was too short and underwhelming according to Producer and creator Kenneth Johnson. Lou was a little taller and far bulkier so he won the part of the Hulk. Arnold perservered and got much better roles and became a worldwide sensation; he soon was king of the box office and could swim in money while Lou suffered in silence caked in greasy makeup that reeked of chemicals, he comparatively was paid a pittance and was locked into a contract. He was typecast as a mute muscleman while Schwarzenegger was Hollywood's darling. I heard Lou had lawsuits against him for crooked schemes and embezzlements as well
The laws are like that because people will not band together and fight. It's ashame people conform to anything instead of fighting for their right and natural right to protect themselves. That the reason I had a friend that that use to be a state policeman and he said you got to protect yourself even from law and government. He said uf u have shoot someone to protect urself and your family then don't call the law. You take care of the situation urself... enough said. You have a right to protect urself and someone else and ur family and stuff! People u need to start fighting back, if not it's going to get worst!! From the sledgemaster

I remember mr ragers did a thing on the hluk
Was Mr. Ragers the angry version of Mr. Rogers? JK lol 🤣 I had to ask.
If a man the size of Lou Farigno told me to cook him eggs I'd do it. I would hate to do anything to offend a man of his size
Right, besides how hard is it to cook eggs. 😀
Both men were perfect for their roles.
In a lot of scenes you see some spots that seemed to be missed.
Lou: "Cook me a dozen eggs"!
Makeup guy: "No way"
Lou: "That was a tasty makeup guy"😂
It was make up. It was green gear grease that came from Germany. From the sledgemaster
I hope not to become angry When I get angry sometimes I really get angry
It would be great with rubber skins but not too much

The Hulk was scary as a kid
i wish hollywood would have the balls to hire a bodybuilder to play the hulk again and just use cgi enhancement for effects like being 10 feet tall
I like your videos
Thanks
Awesome Video
Thanks!
Your voice fits your video content perfectly. Just saying, well done 👍
Thanks, I appreciate it.😀

Very cool, I just sung (Not Karaoke) The Lonely Man theme song, you may like it, I'm a Hulk fan of the original, TV show, also I got to meet Bill & Lou in the 80s, Thanks you for sharing this awesome video. 😁😇
Thanks! Meeting both of those guys would have been so cool!
Thanks awesome I love Lou and the late great Bill Bixby
They should have made the Hulk talk like Lou ferrigno wanted that would have been so cool 👍
He used to talk in the Comics.
He used to say Stuff like-"You Make Hulk Mad !!! Hulk Smash !!!
@@queenglamazona8789 yes I used to collect HULK comics back then as a kid I was always hoping he would say something on the show 😥
The reason why writer, producer and director Kenneth Johnson refused to have The Hulk speak, was that he knew that the character would be much more believable to a TV audience if his vocabulary was strictly limited to a couple of growls.
The Hulk speaking worked just fine for the comics (which I collected avidly for many years and I still have them all to this day), but it would've looked way too silly for a live action TV series.
@@stephenalanmoore7278 yes talking like a normal person would ...but an occasional Hulk smash or something would have been fine
At one point, he looked like Shrek.
I would have loved it if Lou was allowed to talk as The Hulk
It would have been amazing.
In the Incredibles Hulk animated series from the 90s he got to voice the Hulk
Why couldn't they shoot all the Hulk scenes at once for a episode.?
Só gostaria de saber se o cara que faz o huk tem a mesma força que o huk tem, tambem,se ele realmente se transforma é outra coisa
How can I get the book for my 37 years of collecting the incredible hulk. From the sledgemaster 3 times making professional powerlifting history in 2022.
I guess he takes all his frustrations out by breaking furnitures. 😬
@@timepoet77 gotcha. That makes sense 🤘
How much was he paid per episode?
The real hulk
Was that Mister Rogers voice towards the end?
Yep, that was from when Mister Rogers visited the set of the Hulk.
Any New hulk cartoon from 80s
Was allowed to do a actor gig in one episode
Where is the clip at 6:57 from?
I mixed together a Hulk scene with a Spider-man scene where they were in elevator shafts.
I eat 14 eggs a day for protein for my weightlifting/professional powerlifting. From the sledgemaster
How do you not mention he did the marvel movies too? Not to forget, it might have actually been the reason for his passing.... You never know....
