Lou was mammoth. Hes probably the most underrated bodybuilder ever. The problem with body building is 1 the way muscles look is genetic and 2 the judging is subjective
Lou's father: 'Lou you know you look like something Michelangelo cut out' True this men were more than bodybuilders, they were true artists. That's the difference of Olympia between now and back then.
No, that would suggest that Lou was not training hard enough, because if he did, he would have been unbeatable. I think it's just an epic quote and I would not take it literally. It just goes to show that Arnold was always hungry to give it all and how much he thought of Lou as a great athlete. I love these two.
main thing being, Arnold posed a LOT, he left nothing to chance. Including of course posing in between sets when already tired etc. Most of the old school guys took the posing more seriously. Look at guys like Zane who could effortlessly hold vacuums etc with no sign of strain
I see the difference.... Lou says "that's enough, no more" and he got pumped up by the outside people around him. People around him wanted him to win more than he wanted to win. While Arnold couldn't wait to squat another rep of 800 pounds. Great vid man, thanks!
@MagickObscura Obscura: was gonna say exactly what you wrote. Arnold's legs were originally his weak point and he trained them to get them to a respectable size but he never squated 800.
@@connordutton674You have no idea what you’re talking about. We had people in our gym at the time that regularly squatted over 700 pounds deadlifted over 800 pounds and bench pressed over 500 pounds that was 50 years ago and we damn sure were not Lou or Arnold.

I adopted his mentality for the promotions at my work. A co worker asked was I scared of my competition I said No, I can’t be beat I’m Mr Universe and this is my world I can’t be beat. Plus Body builders never focus on the next mans training methods when it’s time to compete.
Arnold is German, they has a curtain intelligent and wisdom. When it's time to play they play and when it's time to work they work and work hard. I am talking about the 70's when I was stationed their. They were literal, focused and straight forward. I was training at " Midcity gym" , and Arnold and some of the big time Wrestlers worked out together. It was to many big guys walking around. It seems like Arnold had that science behind him, plus he is intelligent. I didn't compete, no way! But I followed the his training style. Precision and focus was his main style. He have that German since of humor too.
@JESSE B Midcity gym is a or was a gym in Manhattan in the late 70's I was 18 years old. It was the only gym famous professionals worked out at. Lou is from Brooklyn and his gym was in the Italian section of Brooklyn. I wouldn't visit there. Me and my friend would gym hop all over NYC. I am from the Bronx. Bodybuilding hadn't caught on there to much in 1976. We moved from the South Bronx to the East Bronx to the Throngs neck projects it has its own community center with a gym ( free ). This is where I was introduced to weight lifting and Bodybuilding by my crazy Jamaican friend. No one hard knew about none of it including diet eating right. It was him that pushed me to lift and go watch contest, because I wasn't interested either. My friend was wild most of the upcoming Bodybuilders had regular jobs because Bodybuilding is expensive. It was two major protein powers back then Weider and Bob Hoffman. I took Joe Weider's "Crash weight gain protein powder formula number 7". I wanted to be like the one's in the mags. I was only 126 pounds when I started lifting. My Jamaican friend was more fanatical then I was. Back then you can go to a gum and pay a few dollars to workout for a day. We wanted to know" the secrets". Plus we wanted to see and talk to the big guys. It was no GNC, no actual health food stores. Everything was hard to find. Gyms sold your protein power. I come from NYC I don't know what country people did to gain muscle back then. I was never a serious Bodybuilder, I joined the Army and I started ( power lifting) for the Army. Like I said, I come from NYC and meeting people ( famous) people was hard because they walk the streets anyway. Google " Midcity gym" like all gyms back then they were small and basic. Not like today with these super gyms, the Westcoast was light years a head of the east coast. That's why Big Lou lifted Brooklyn. He was under "Dan Lurie" , and Arnold was under "Joe Weider". Apples and Oranges as far as marketing and contest. I could say more but it was fun remembering all that shit. Oh yeah, my Jamaican friend grew to be 6'2 300 pound power lifter competing too, he became a ( strong arm) collecting debts for Maria. I hadn't seen him in 30 years and one day he called me and I thought I couldn't be found in the tiny town in Pennsylvania I was living at the time. He laughed and said I worked for Mafia I am a strong arm that's how I found you. I miss those days.
@@broad405 actually i do. Arnold himself alluded to it. Going into the gym and your mind already programed for something and then you make an instant u turn . It keeps the muscle been in shock and avoiding hitting a plateau
A master class in mind games. Mr Olympia just isn’t about the body it’s about the mindset. The great winners new they were greatness personified and it showed in their poses.
One of the best stories of how, at the top levels of sport it is the psychology of the athlete that separates the winners from the losers. Both great competitors but Arnold always had the upper hand mentally.
yeah it helped that he had great genetics though.. i mean as an artist the guy is chiseled. everything is square. I was surprised that Lou had bigger arms. but looking at Arnie hanging around his arms are bloody huge too so... but he did have that confident glint in his eye. but almost a psychotic desire to train to be the best in reality too, not just in his head.
Nothing makes more proud than knowing we have done all the necessary efforts. Regardless the result, victory and defeat are just moments and they alternate. What remains is ourselves, always.
My dad is a retired Doctor, who had a visit from Lou. His door was open to his office, he was reading something, and the lights from the hallway got really dim. Lou was so massive, he had to duck his head in the door, and turn sideways to get in. My dad said he was the biggest man he has ever seen.

@studio bauhaus Lou had a more naturally beautiful, symmetrical frame and muscle shape. Arnold had a giant rib cage and chest and ape type hunched trap muscles and ultra peaked biceps on one arm. Both did not have great calves though Arnold, whether by training alone or training plus calf implants had slightly better calves than Lou. Arnold won fair and square here. Not because of Weider. Not at all. Not at this Olympia. ( Likely at his final Olympia years later on his comeback year ). So why did Arnold win? He was slightly more cut, less water in the skin. His muscularity from muscle group to muscle group, especially in the upper body, was more separated. More muscle separation. His calves were fuller, longer, more developed. Finally, his presentation, posing, was sharper, quicker from pose to pose, more assured, steady, solid, confident. He also looked very sure of himself. Lou looked nervous and more unsteady posing and doing pose transitions. Now, personally, from a genetic standpoint, I prefer Lou's structure, muscle shape and how his mass is dispersed. He has a more perfect body in muscle length, shape and distribution of all his muscle. I also WANTED Lou to win so badly when I first saw this movie back in the 1970's. But, the fact is, Arnold deserved the win and was better that day.
@@philosopher0076 I have to go with Studio bauhaus.... I've watched a video of Jay Cutler doing chest. And he basically stated the same thing. He said he never believed the exaggerating slow reps/sets. Nor the trailing to failure too often. He said from the beginning, no one would train like that and the muscles would grow just as well. He said to him its all about the contracting and squeezing and muscle connection. Which is something against to what Dorian Yates would say. So sometimes I'm confused of how should i train.
@@MsRAJDIP hey man thank you for the reply. I just commented the same thing on one of the Jeffs videos. Im still confused if i should go slow or normal speed each rep. and should i do like low reps heavy controlled set. Or normal speed 12 reps each set? By the way, my current goal is to get big and more muscle mass as much as possible.
@@jomainasdf1433 for muscle maturity and definition you need to do 12-14 reps in a controlled manner, lots of negetive and pause. For muscle growth just go for heavy weights 6-8 reps in compound like bench press, military, squat, deadlift. Also use heavy dumbell to balance symmetry. For arm day go lighter with 12-14 reps. Heavy chest, shoulder and back workout will automatically add your biceps and triceps. I am not a professional bodybuilder but working out for last 5 year naturally. This was the most result driven for me. Also how much muscle you can gain naturally that is limited to you genetically.
It's amazing yet sad to watch this and come to the realization that if this kind of competition existed today, it would most likely end up in violence. This was real competition.
I only knew him as the Incredible Hulk as a kid. I watched EVERYthing I could with him as the Hulk. Totally my hero. Then I learned much later that he was a world class body builder. What a neat dude.
Both are incredible and inspiring huiman beings, in their own way. They both overcomed many difficulties and barriers, working their way up in life without trying to put others down.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is the greatest bodybuilder in history with symmetry without looking like the freaks of today, and Lou Ferrigno was a giant in mass. Two of the greatest bodybuilders ever in my mind.
7:10 where can you see such kind of dedication in todays world . I mean just look at the angry spirit turns a person from rookie to a side competitor of MR. Olympia. This is motivation. thats the success.
Lou was without a doubt a very hard working individual that put everything he had into climbing through the ranks. That said, if you've ever watched 'Pumping Iron' you can see that Arnold certainly had a phycological advantage over him for sometime.
I mean arnolds posing was a little better, but I feel like Arnold got the better genetics als Lou was a bit taller. Even tho his arms were bigger it did not appear like this cause arnolds height compared with symetry. But in my mind its an honor for Lou that he filled the history books as one of the most challenging 2nd places ever. I have so much respect for this guy

Arnold was pretty much the one that started mind games in BB. Don't let this fool you into thinking that Lou could have beat Arnold though. Arnold was in much better form (posing, symmetry, more cut, better proportioned etc.)
Especially when you see them fighting or arguing onstage, I know they are passionate but with all of the controversy with enhancers and the psychological problems, they could stand to look back and what a real professional looks like and how they carry themselves.
Yeah when Arnold left, every competitor gave Ferrigno the Olympia title. He had too chose between competing, and going on too play the Hulk. I think he did the best choice.
@@Mandred85 he was favored to win the Olympia. But when he got the part of the Hulk, he couldn't do both . So he was devoted to the series. The rigors of the makeup, putting in 10 to 12 hours a day on the tv series put any plans for the Olympia on hold. When in makeup, his pores couldn't sweat, or he'd smear the makeup. When he competed in the Olympias, and the Master's Olympia, he looked phenomenal. I think he was the victim of politics when he didn't win. But that's just my opinion.

Arnold tinha uma confiança inabalável e você pode notar isso sem dificuldade nesses documentários. Ele está sempre muito à vontade, carismático entre os competidores.
@JESSE B
Midcity gym is a or was a gym in Manhattan in the late 70's I was 18 years old.

Arnold was alpha to an intimidated Lew. Even before they set foot on stage, it was already over.
@studio bauhaus Please. Lew was smooth and scared to be anywhere near Arnold. Especially on stage.
@studio bauhaus So, your trying to say Lou was natural? You absolutely kno nothing about that era, or bodybuilding in general.
@studio bauhaus Absolutely the truth. Marketing won, physicalness lost.
@@philosopher0076 I have to go with Studio bauhaus.... It was a marketing win for Arnold, in that, Weider products wanted a spokesman for their products and Lou was deaf and did not speak well because of his deafness. Time under tension hadn't been invented yet. It always amazes me how quickly Arnold and Lou would do a rep/set. Results were all that mattered.
