Revisiting this video after so many years. This video got me super interested in the lore! I remember basically reading the entire wiki and visiting every inch of the game after this. That research and exploration really supercharged my excitement for the game back then, trying to figure out how everything pieced together in S1/S2. And I'm still playing :)
The theories in your video are so much better than what we got. Btw - video suggestion: Revisit all of these mysteries videos, and compare how they panned out and/or udate them. Doing all in one video should give you enough material to make it worthwhile.
GW2 Need to do a spotlight on you in some way. Thanks to you a lot of their lore is getting out the the public in a very well done way. Thanks for the loads of time you put into these videos! Keep it up for as long as you can.
I LOVE this stuff. Thank you so much for doing this. I wish I had the patience to actually keep up with this in game normally but this supplement is definitely keeping me interested.
I've been rewatching those lately and boy do they age well. I can not express how much I appreciate your work WP keep it up! PS: still waiting for next episode of LP:D
WHOA, look at the text the PC's clone says @ 29:16 "Just like the battle of Divinity's Reach"... I have no doubt in my mind, now, that the Aetherblades, Steam Creatures, and even the Watchknights are all connected. Thank you, WP, that latter part may be a theory but... the way you hunt this down and put it all together for us is just amazing. I really, REALLY, hope A-Net can pull whatever it is they're attempting to do here off, because this looks like it's going to be amazing.
Oh my god, I am almost shivering, listening to you and imagining what could happen later in-game! This living story is getting so intense and you are such an awesome storyteller! All you said seems possible and I am thrilled to discover the truth in a couple weeks/months.
Don't really know where to message you so it all comes here: Thaumanova data. It's the Researcher right at the entry to it that states it used to be a city. Also states. Inquest had a lab - deep below - the city. Very interesting places to do mysteries/lore about- Ruins of the Unseen -Caledon forest the secret Skritt door with the Eye's of the Unseen behind. Aurora remains+ hidden lake+ interesting bridge and area portal you can't get to at Lionshead outcrop at Brisban wildlands. +human history Hunting lodge.-> whitemantle.
Wow, I never put all the spread-out pieces together like this before! Watching your video and seeing how all the little things tie together blew my mind... I am so psyched up for the fractal now... and also wondering what's about to happen on the 20th as well. AWESOME video!
This is pretty awesome indeed. I love lore but I don't always pick up on everything so hearing your research bring it all together just makes it so much better.
youve done it again, pots. there's so much realistic evidence from you that this is pretty much CONFIRMED. Your podcast fills a very large hole in guild wars 2 in game lore because of the puzzle like nature of all the 3 setence conversations with in game characters. im so thrilled that the lore is actually alive and thriving and i had NO IDEA it could be this dark!
This truly shows why I've been following you for all this time. You got me interested into lore more than you could ever imagine. I found some mysteries myself but have never been that deep and logical with my thinking. I'm not impatient about what is about to come :)
Consider me mind-blown! Although a lot seems to hinge upon a personal story choice that you may/may not see, it still makes for a compelling picture when put together like this. Now I'm suddenly seeing hidden conspiracies in even the most mundane choices you make!
WP, I enjoyed this a lot. Your descriptive and detailed theory of the story feels more complex and interesting than anything I've experienced in game. Thank you for putting your time and thought into this.
Another fantastic video WP! Your lore videos are so exciting and is part of the reason that I am still playing Guild Wars 2. Even though I love the lore for Guild Wars 2 in the first place, you make it way more interesting, you're such a great storyteller! :) Keep these videos coming! I am already looking forward to the next one! :D
This one is really fun to watch all these years later now that we know how all this is connected to Scarlet Briar. What's interresting is to think that in that alternate reality, your character and Shodd joined Scarlet instead of defeating her. But I wonder how that related to Mordremoth?
In a LW episode before HOT, where we play as Caithe, we see 'Scarlet' in her early years playing with a steam creature, trying to figure it out. That was long before any of all of that ever took place. Could the reaction explosion have sent one of them into the reach of Scarlet in the past and altered the timeline? In recent lore, she is credited to making them before moving on to her more aggressive mechanical monsters. That could explain why they don't ever stop spawning.
Great theory! love your hard reseach ingame and through internet and thanks for sharing this video with us. I Played the infinity ball (story path? too and I got a few shivers after you repeated some parts of the dialouges and my mind was blown away too.
This video just blew my mind. I gotta admit you did some really decent research here! Thank you so much for putting out that awesome content. Keep up the good work :)
The more I think of it, the more Guild Wars seems like a storyline in Magic the Gathering... The whole "rips in space and time" thing reminds me of Timespiral. And that ain't a bad thing! I love the backstory to Magic, especially Timespiral and Ravnica.
MercuryAlphaInc What if Tyria is just a plane in the multiverse pre-mending and these Gods we worship are in fact planeswalkers and them going missing means they planeswalked to a different plane?
Wow....just wow....Props to you for figuring all these links together. Everything you said seems to play nicely together in the theory. We shall soon find out if you are right!
I remember how stoked I was when after picking the Infinity Ball story line it turned out to be this massive mind blowing mystery with all this cool stuff going on. Some of the most fascinating moments in GW2, hands down. To learn some more on the subject would be a-ma-zing, I'd love to see all this tie in like you explained in the video. Thank you for all the hard work, WP!
I love these mysteries. I hope you are right and that these are all tied together somehow. It gets me really excited with this game and the living story.
So, I discovered your videos by chance (actually from your high crit ele build). I am very impressed with all your videos man! As a huge GW 1 and 2 fan, I think your knowledge of the lore is awesome. Very entertaining and I can only hope Anet is as vested in their lore as some of the more dedicated players.
Fascinating. I like time travel stories. It makes me want to play my asura more or start another to live thru it again and take more notice of what is said.
WP, so much info... I think if you showed these places on the map or drawn out a mind map, It would've helped connect the pieces. I really liked your gw1 history series and I think I had something like that in mind
OMG, I did that personal story and though it was boring because it didn't had nothing related to what I knew at time, but now, GOD. ANet is messing with our minds. Awesome Mystery, one of my favourite so far (but the series is awesome, please don't stop this, ever)
thank you very much for making this video! the way you can peice these things together is amazing and intrigues me. Plus if ArenaNet did release some information about this I would not be one to read up on it, making your video extremely helpful and eye-opening. Keep up the good work Potatoes!
I like where this is going. I hope it does somehow tie in w/ the personal story because I totally dig the alternate reality scenario we could very well see. Anything mind bending from a story perspective is amazing IMO.
It all adds up! During Dragon Bash (after sky pirates started) Ellen Kiel was the inspector of the aetherblade attack of the opening ceremony of dragon bash. She could be part of the aetherblades that are from that alternate world. Now when I think about it, it was no coincidence that she knew where the hideouts where. Thanks WP awesome vid! I'm excited for the new fractal!!!:)
I stopped watching your GW1 LP about a year ago, when GW2 came out and I was sucked into it... now I'm regretting that fact. I've missed your commentary, dude.
while I know I have nothing solid to back me up this is what I feel like is "correct": as mentioned, we have scarlet as a head of the aetherblade. 'scarlet's minions' include clockwork- and steam creatures. I think that scarlet might have been sucked into "our world". might have had a pact with the inquest and might have a relationship with the one who was elected (forgot her name. I voted charr). Scarlet wanted to go back but found more potential in "our world" than at first glance, and learned about the reactor. she got the inquest to do the dirty work (without letting them in on her ulterior motives) and got an unstable portal to her world. Scarlet then needed someone with the ressources, intelligence and power to stabilize the portal. So she got kiel(was that her name) on the aetherblade side. and used her new powerfull ally to stabilize the portal. (what do I know, probably even tricked the priory; speaking of Lornar's Pass) this is definitely not finite or the answer but it's something that has been on my mind :p
This is a very good video, it sent shivers down my spine. I really like tinfoilhatting, especially when there is a lot of good evidence. In this case, there is. Being a Doctor Who and Lovecraft enthusiast, I can't wait until the curtain drops and we get to see what's behind it. Spasming realities, time adrift, masquerades and paradoxes are my cup of tea! I think the Queen's Jubilee is going to explode during one of the next weeks. The watchknights were controller by the mysterious figure.
Would it be possible that the Watch Knights that the Queen has commissioned came from an unknown source? I remember at the beginning of the cinematic where they are first introduced, one of the asuras walks up to it and find it really interesting, especially the technology. So, we have someone building robots for the queen, that then in turn, go haywire (like the one fighting logan) and bring war to DR?
continuing from "Your world is built on fog and sand" sand is the crystal desert and fog is the evaporated water when abaddon fell. the poem also goes "She has some hard lessons to teach" the lesson is to followers of 6 gods from the followers of abaddon as for thaumanova reactor... perhaps that's where the AR's and inquest made first contact. the poem also goes "time for time to stop" which could mean end of our timeline.
So since we now know that Scarlett just created the steam creatures and used portals to transport them (and in the end abandoned them by transporting them to lornar's pass when she didn't need them anymore; which gives us the reason why they are there): How does the part of the asuran PS mentioned in this video makes sense? Do you open a portal to an alternative reality/future where Scarlett didn't die and succeeded in whatever she was up to? Did the player character became evil because he was convinced by scarlett (maybe also looking into Omadd's machine while Scarlett was alive?)? I don't know, but I would like anet to go back on this because at the moment it feels like a lookover.
This is about the steam creatures attacking delegates. I've had them spawn in Diessa Plateau during a delegate escort mission. I thought it was weird when I first saw it but now it is starting to make sense.
About half way through I realized where you were goin with it... Aetherblades, Inquest explosions, portals, time travel, mysterious seam creatures I always wondered about... Incredible. I have one more piece of info to add. You know how I suggested the Inquest and Aetherblades we're heavily suggested in the Zephyrites trek as "scavengers and power-mongers" trying to get crystals of Elder Dragon Power? (You can see where Im goin with this)... continued
Absolutely agree with WP. Came to familiar conclusion after reading everything recently. And yes, my character was the creator of infinity ball, though back then I hated my choice. Now I feel (as a character), at very least, special to guild wars lore, thing that didn't happen since game launch.
Untrue, steam creates have begun spawning during escort events for balloons all over the world, not just the shiverpeaks.. Those same events also feature aetherblades.
I got a chill at the end with the mention of the Battle of Divinity's Reach, but even with that I didn't think this likely... until Anet sent out the clock's from Scarlet to the different fan blogs along with her poem. Some version of this theory being true looks very likely now.
O.O .......................... at the beginning i tought you were overthinking this, but at the stuff at the end.. with the asura story and stuff... wow. just wow.
One thing you didn't take note of: when using the Infinity Ball to summon the Mysterious Stranger and Vice Admiral Shodd each spawn comes with an effect on the camera. Before this mission that didn't happen, but there is another instance the same effect is used: when you get mesmerized by a fake Syska if you chose "My greatest fear is that I would fail so grievously that I would lose the respect of my comrades. That I'd disappoint my companions and be dishonored."
Colin also had this to say in an interview with IGN "It takes the story of the last year and brings it all together. It makes it clear where everything has been going and really closes a lot of open questions that players have had. It’s a story that really affects the entire world and permanently creates content and change for the entire world game-wide, which is really something that’s important to us and we want to showcase that that’s where stuff is headed."
Amazing vid! Did you see Scarlet from Living Story is sylvari? Likely she at least started as Nightmare Court, now working with Aetherblades who we know are working with the Inquest. The one place the Nightmare Court are in alliance with the Inquest is Brisban Wildlands (hello again!), where they form The Sinister Triad with the human bandits. Just north of Thaumacore IC is Fort Vandal, a very interesting and secretive, impenetrable base of the sinister triad. Has an asura gate apparently!
I just had to rewatch this video. I don't know what compelled me to do so, but this time around I noticed something in the game play. Does anyone else see the writing that's all over the top of the building? I think it's written in Asuran Script but I have no clue what it might say (Krytan I can read fairly well, but Asuran is lost to me), and now I'm wondering if that has a story of some sort behind it.
Btw WP IGN did a an interview with Colin Johnson and he said about the next patch: "It takes the story of the last year and brings it all together. It makes it clear where everything has been going and really closes a lot of open questions that players have had. It’s a story that really affects the entire world and permanently creates content and change for the entire world game-wide
I remember making the connection Thaumanova Reactor - Crucible of Eternity at the end of the story mode of CE, just before or just after the Kudu fight. I think it was in some character conversation, not in a cinematic, so it's difficult to find in the cinema modes of dungeon runs now.
I just noticed that the Golem at 33:05 is mr. Sparkles! You read a story about him in one of your guild wars 2 lore videos about a year ago, that's so cool he's still around!
Maybe, one day we'll get a LS update, including the battle of Divinity's Reach. This update then also opens up the path to the map north of Divinity's Reach.
Oh my god!! These mysteries and lores you let me know just makes this game so much better! My god now I can't wait for the future updates!! And the new stuff happening after 1 week in the divinitys reach birthday thingie, MY GOD!!! There HAS to be a link!
What you say at around 18:20, I can remember as well. I think this piece of info was dropped in the CoE story mode, but it's been a while since I played through that.
I remembered this, which wasn't touched on in the video. Might've been mentioned already, but during the opening ceremony for the Queen's Jubilee, one of the Watchknights ends up going haywire. It's hinted that some one is taking control of it, and they can't figure out how. Now, it seems like the watchknights are a type of steam-based technology. Just looking at them, they're put together out of all manner of gears and cogs and plates. The Mysterious Stranger seems to control it with ease.
the part of this video clip where WP talks about the alternate self coming to kill the player character kinda reminds me of the Jet Li's movie "The One"... where jet li goes to all different alternate realities to kill all different version of himself so that he can become more and more powerful
It's probably already known, but Elen Kiel is wearing an Aetherblade Captains uniform now. Magnus asked her where she got it durring the living story bit where he suggested she go and broker a trade with the Bazaar.
I kinda remember someone in game mentioning that the reactor was under a city. But I don't remember where I saw that, so I could be just remembering the wiki.
With everything we know now, with Scarlett and everything she had her hands in, do you still think there's a connection between the Asura personal story with the Infinity Ball and the alternate reality to what all happened in the first season of the living world story?
Wiki also says: "After the explosion, the energy source that the Inquest was experimenting on was moved to the Thaumacore Inquiry Center in Toxal Bog, causing the chaos effect to spread northward." So the they are related to each other :)
You might very well be onto something there, mate! I also noted something passing strange during the Queens Jubilee opening event. My character, a sylvari ranger, is asked to demonstrate the combat effectiveness of one of the Queen's new Watch Knights, a new weapon in Divinity Reach's arsenal, but Logan Thackery pushes rank and takes the honor of testing the new weapon upon himself. Whereupon it is discovered that Anise, the Queen's closest personal adviser and supposed high ranking officer
If all this work is in game for the story already, voting for the Reactor fractal, we end up getting something we'd probably have seen in one format or another anyway. I can't say the same for Abaddon. A fractal may have been the best way for that, not to mention the likelihood we'd have played as the other gods. Plus, I don't know if fractals have been used as very effective story tools. Not saying they can't, just that the structure hasn't lent itself to presentation of lore or exposition.
I have a gut feeling that the either the Forest Dragon or the Deep Sea Dragon has to do some thing with it or the Sylvari, the creepy lady in the Crown Pavilion was Sylvari and they could possibly be related to the Forest Dragon :O
I was like "yeah, yeah, conspiracies, go on, go on", till at the end of the video, I got shivers down my spine. Wow. I so hope this comes out true, or at least a part of it.
Revisiting this video after so many years. This video got me super interested in the lore! I remember basically reading the entire wiki and visiting every inch of the game after this. You were right!
When you finish the tower of nightmares with an Asura that had the infinity ball Scarlet comments on it!
You were friggin right!
Ahaaha so I have heard! But I don't think its complete confirmation :P
Scarlet comments on every personal story selection/order/endstory (if completed).
I LOVE this stuff. Thank you so much for doing this. I wish I had the patience to actually keep up with this in game normally but this supplement is definitely keeping me interested.
Still coming back to this in 2017. These speculative moments made Season 1 so incredible to me.
time and again you leave me wanting for answers and more to questions I didn't have half an hour before. I loved this one
I've been rewatching those lately and boy do they age well. I can not express how much I appreciate your work WP keep it up!

Wait, seriously?!! YOU just blew MY mind! That's amazing and I'm incredibly sad I never put that in the video!

Can the other version of Tyria be a world where if Scarlet succeeded in her conquest? Just a thought there..
Or what if we take her place in the conquest?
AMAZING how ALL THIS fits SO PERFECTLY together! Great work. Subscribed

Omg wooden potatoe you are amazing at this i love admire your work and just wow just mind blowing thank younfor all your work just thank you so much

The more I think of it, the more Guild Wars seems like a storyline in Magic the Gathering... The whole "rips in space and time" thing reminds me of Timespiral.

Now I'm really excited for this fractal and the new living story update
This has to be my favourite mysteries video. Thank you so much! I can't wait to see what happens next, and hear how excited WP gets =D

Great Scott! I didn't even know this Back To The Future like cool story line existed. I really missed out with my Asura choices.
Mind blown. Thanks for this summary of what you've found!
I think it's written in Asuran Script but I have no clue what it might say (Krytan I can read fairly well, but Asuran is lost to me), and now I'm wondering if that has a story of some sort behind it.
i would love to watch this part of lore revisited by you with all we know now.
Btw WP
IGN did a an interview with Colin Johnson and he said about the next patch: "It takes the story of the last year and brings it all together. It makes it clear where everything has been going and really closes a lot of open questions that players have had. It’s a story that really affects the entire world and permanently creates content and change for the entire world game-wide
Actually it'd be really simple to just toggle on the steam creatures for this update, they dont do anything specific, right?
I remember making the connection Thaumanova Reactor - Crucible of Eternity at the end of the story mode of CE, just before or just after the Kudu fight. I think it was in some character conversation, not in a cinematic, so it's difficult to find in the cinema modes of dungeon runs now.
I just noticed that the Golem at 33:05 is mr. Sparkles! You read a story about him in one of your guild wars 2 lore videos about a year ago, that's so cool he's still around!
11 years later, and I still hope we get the Abaddon fractal
maybe with Janthir Wilds...
Jeeeeeesus, and I thought Dark Souls lore was complicated enough.
dark souls lore is pretty simple... we just have to scramble it together from almost nothing :p
Maybe, one day we'll get a LS update, including the battle of Divinity's Reach. This update then also opens up the path to the map north of Divinity's Reach.
Knowing what we know now about the living story, I would love to see a followup video to this one.
I don't have any addons for my traits? Oo
I love these!
Also random note it would be amazing if we could see snaff in the mists and flesh out this plot device called destiny's edge
Oh my god!!
These mysteries and lores you let me know just makes this game so much better!
My god now I can't wait for the future updates!!
And the new stuff happening after 1 week in the divinitys reach birthday thingie, MY GOD!!!
There HAS to be a link!
wow, not gonna lie, I smiled when you pieced it all together near the end :)
This was amazing dude. Im about 10x pumped for the current story now than i was
It's probably already known, but Elen Kiel is wearing an Aetherblade Captains uniform now. Magnus asked her where she got it durring the living story bit where he suggested she go and broker a trade with the Bazaar.
Chaos crystals? Glint and Kralkatorrik? Their crystals being used for power like Primordius' power used for Asura gates in GW 1?
i found one under the sylvari city as well
I kinda remember someone in game mentioning that the reactor was under a city.
I always pick the infinity ball with my asura characters, because that scene at the end is so utterly great :D
I actually love this theory and wish that it might happen...it would be awesome to actually have this kind of depth in the living story.
I can never get over just how much "extra" has been thrown in to this game that I would never know about if not for these videos
