WABC-TV in New York City used a version of this theme in the 80s/early 90s

That's because WABC-TV had **THE ORIGINAL** theme. Nine has used one that's based off of it.
Same with sister station KTRK in Houston in the 80s to mid 90s!!!
Same with KGO San Francisco and KABC Los Angeles.
NBN News in Newcastle including Northern NSW also use this as they have being doing it since Monday!
They still used the old NBN music in Taree until late 2021. I was there when it switched.

It amazes me that Nine have used this iteration of the theme - which is tinny, simplistic and repetitive - for longer than they used the far superior 2000-2005 version (and for that matter the 2006-2008 version).
The fact that they literally copy-pasted the closing seconds of the 2000-2005 version and tacked that on at the end feels like a concession that the older arrangement was better.
