It is indeed a masterpiece. While beautiful and at times even magical, the tone of this work is so majestically icy that it hints of a kind of inhuman menace and is therefore darker overall than either his 2nd or 3rd, which are more transparently aggressive. This is part of its brilliance. (though not nearly as dark as No. 6)

Wonderful symphony, but not very well known.
I have loved prokofiev for many years, but did not know this symphony or the second one. I listened to the second one and it just seemed like noise at first... It took many, many more listenings than usual for me to "get it", because it is so complex.
I've known his first, third, and 5th symphonies for about 30 plus years... I'm really glad that I took the time to delve into his second. It is so complex, is hard to discern at first, but is well worth the effort! One of my favorites now.

I've had similar a similar experience with his 2nd as well as some of Shostakovich's work. The thing is, we obviously must have faith already in the composer to keep listening. What is it that brings us back, that tells us that this is difficult but deep and interesting. I had the most profound experience with Shosty's 4th which I really disliked at first; why did I bother to keep listening? I had some intuition and I did indeed fall completely in love with it. I love Prokofiev's 4th and its icy majesty. His music is passionate yet so cold. How is that even possible? Cheers.

Thank you for putting this on youtube. So good to see what's in the score of this masterpiece! Although we need a bit better orchestra to bring this magic score to sound... Also sound quality is a bit strange.

Interesting version. I'm not quite sure whether I like it or not in comparison to others, but it highlights certain nuances of the symphony that are not appreciated in most versions. Anyway, no matter who conducts, this symphony is absolutely incredible, as the rest of Prokofiev's symphonic work. About the second movement in particular... words fall short for me to express what it transmits. Just listen to 17:50.

You are right... I had the chance to conduct this piece with two major orchestras in Mexico... I've been to heaven...

It does seem to be constantly running away from something; from itself.

The first movement is off tune, intentionally....the off tune sarcasm gets worse the second time through that theme...

Truly, 19:15 to 21:45 is wonderful.

This symphony could be called "The Bipolar Symphony." Truly.
    Mucical genius.
For probably 30 years, Stravinsky was my very favorite composer...
This symphony, along with some other new works that I've discovered by Prokoviev, have pushed poor Igor into second place...
    2nd Symphony
    4th Symphony
    Chout ballet
    And others

Love it, some of it sounds like Prokofiev is trying to start his crappy Soviet car and it just won't turn over replete with backfires and flooding. Funny. Or not.

It is funny. Or, if it doesn't start, you get shot in the back of the head. Also funny, for the one ordering the other one with the gun.

@@scottmichaelawaken I agree. There is more humour in Prokofiev's music than most composers.
