I like this video. I can finally know how to distinguish between the different periods. But I hope after you have played each music, don't give the answer right after each music. Wait for at least 3 seconds then give the answers. :)
Terraced refers to the fact that the dynamics change suddenly not gradually. Typical in Baroque music to play a block at one dynamic and then change it for the next phrase, rather than blend them together with crescendi or diminuendi.
Yes, in late November. Aural section is my weakest even after finishing the official aural book. I will continue to watch your other videos. Thank you and keep up the good work.

I love your videos. Being somewhat older than most exam candidates I am preparing well ahead of time and still have a month to go before my Grade 6 exam. However, I am a little curious about the use of "homonphonic" in the classical example since this has been described to me as music where everything moves together - eg choral music where there each note of the choral melody matches exactly the chordal accompaniment. The L hand part seemed to move rapidly here which leaves me a little confused.
The rhythm doesn't have to be exactly the same in both hands, but with homophonic music there is one predominant melody with an accompaniment, that can quite often have a very similar rhythm to the melody. However, polyphonic music will be two or more very independent voices which act in a more "question / answer" manner. Hope that helps.

One of the questions at this grade will be about style and period, a second question will be about topics covered in previous grades such as character, tonality, tempo, dynamics or articulation.
It is neither impressionistic not jazz in style, but in an exam if you do have a piece that is one of those styles you will get more credit for saying so rather than simply 20th century. After all, the question asks for "STYLE" and period.
Will your examiner just play 1 piece? Right? But I'm going to take my grade 8 exam this year and your videos are helping so much! Also could you more videos on modulation because I find it very difficult and your a great help!
+DeathInterface Studios Now there's a challenge for you... They're all on this channel in the current ABRSM syllabus. Happy hunting, a little starter for you, there's some Beethoven and Brahms but I don't want to give the game away saying which is which as it would spoil the recognizing the period for this video.
This is the part where I mostly slip up, I really needed help because my exam is tomorrow. This was really helpful!!
Good luck!
I’m glad that i found this channel today. I have a grade 7 exam this friday and these videos are so helpful. Thank you so much.
You're most welcome. Please let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the feedback.
I will need to keep practicing this.

Hi, thankyou again for this video. Im just wondering, what is terraced dynamics? ( 2:45 )
Terraced refers to the fact that the dynamics change suddenly not gradually. Typical in Baroque music to play a block at one dynamic and then change it for the next phrase, rather than blend them together with crescendi or diminuendi.
Thankyou.
Thank you for the video. Your explaniantion is succinct and helpful. I should watch your other videos before my exam.
You are very kind. Thank you. Are you taking your exam soon?
Yes, in late November. Aural section is my weakest even after finishing the official aural book. I will continue to watch your other videos. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Ur video is so much better than mine
At this part of the aural test do they only ask you about period or about other characteristics of the piece as well? Many thanks
One of the questions at this grade will be about style and period, a second question will be about topics covered in previous grades such as character, tonality, tempo, dynamics or articulation.
yes they did massively
+Golden Hat Very happy to hear that, it makes putting these videos that much more rewarding when I receive appreciative comments like that.
Is the last one 20th century impressionistic or jazz style? Do i need to identify this?
It is neither impressionistic not jazz in style, but in an exam if you do have a piece that is one of those styles you will get more credit for saying so rather than simply 20th century. After all, the question asks for "STYLE" and period.
Can u make more video like this but also for texture and structure? I am really suck at these TT
