    My experience on Blood Parrot: Yes they are semi-aggressive. I have been raising them for about 20 years. Couple weeks ago my largest one just past away. Probably 12 years old and raised it since it was about 2 inches long. He was 11 inches long.
    When they get maybe about 5 to 6 inches long they will be more aggressive maybe. As they get older like probably over 10 inches they won't be that aggressive.
    I had one a few years ago was a female laid eggs. Then my largest fish or the male got super aggressive protecting the female and their territory. I have a 55/60 gallon tank (48" x 15" x 18"). So the female and the male just hogged like 3 quarters of the tank. I couldn't even put my hand in the tank and my other 7 parrots to one side like squished into a 10 gallon tank with fear. These fish have teeth but small teeth so when they try to bite you it will be like tiny paper cuts. Since most males are infertile, nothing ever happens to the eggs. So after 2 or 3 weeks the female will eat them up if nothing seems to grow out of them. Oh yeah, when females lay eggs, they won't be that hungry or they won't have much appetite. So this happened probably like around when my fish were about 6 inches long. Anyway, my female laid and ate eggs for like 3 times that year probably in 3 month intervals then just died. I'm not sure what could've killed it. Either starving it's self or too much labor.
    Illness and how I cured mine based on experience:
    If they have bloat: Blanched or semi-boiled snow peas that are peeled and cut in half or 4 pieces will help along with some Melafix. It's not a 100% guarantee cure but it worked for me.
    If they have hole in the head: try Seachem Metroplex. If you do use this, please follow instructions cause this is a very strong powder. Sprinkle bits onto water or dissolve in water separately before you add to tank.
    Those are the only problems I've come across so far.
    Yes they eat a lot of things: Blood Worms, Pellets, Algae wafers (I think all cichlids like algae wafers) they steal them from my pleco.
    They come and greet you when your near the tank and follow you around. Very playful.
    They do like to dig. I used to have 1 inch of gravel in my tank leveled. Then after a few days you'll see like a crater to the bottom floor of the tank.
    It was a good video. Enjoyed your description of BPs.

      @@TheAquaticCoder what’s up man 👍🏻 so I got a blood parrot today and he’s yellow and about the size of a half dollar. I noticed that he has black areas on him as well as all his tank mates is this from stress or genetics? I got him some floating cichlid pellets they seem a little big for his size even though they’re not the large pellets, I was wondering if he will eat goldfish pellets or maybe beta pellets or can he handle the cichlid pellets I bought him? Any ideas

      They can be hard to feed. Their creation left their mouths deformed so you gotta be patient and stay with them to make sure they eat it because how other fish will usually eat it before they can.

    To answer your question back to us on upgrading diet (sorry I know you posted this video a year ago). I’m a huge fan of Hikari’s Sinking Cichlid, it’s medium is actually pretty chunky. An upgrade for vibrabites is Hikari’s Jumbo Carnisticks (same shape). And (my favorite) the jumbo carne pellet from Hikari: Massivore delight! My bichir eats those whole, but if you break them in half I find my parrots go nuts for them. Also occasionally treat them with freeze dried red shrimp and live crickets (these float though). But the more variety, the healthier and more vibrant they are! Frozens are always a good supplement to pellets! Cheers to all us derp lovers, and cheers to this fantastic video!!!!!! Thank you for spreading the knowledge!

    I currently own 6 of them (4 common blood parrots) (1 snow white parrot) (1 polar blue parrot) they are very fun to keep, their setup can be tricky to make since they are picky of what they like (in my experience) I do recommend having caves but when you have 6 blood parrots they can get very aggressive with each other and even if they can't cause any injuries due to their mouth shape, they can get very stressed.
    I keep them with a school of tiger barbs and stuff, to prevent their breeding behavior its to reduce the tank's temperature depending where you live, the temperature should be "luke warmish"
    I might get individual caves for them, since my tank is pretty bare due to their size.

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a fun tank! Yeah I personally think more caves or tall decorations (plants or other) help reduce injury. They will still get aggressive probably but more line of sight helps them each get their own area.

    I have 2 and both are about 5 inches. I never would have considered buying these but my son thought different so he put them in one of my 55 gallon tanks. Mine do not seek any hiding places at all. They are hams and love attention! They are aggressive but cannot do any damage to any fish larger than 2 inches. I have 5 giant danios, crayfish and a yellow lab which have no problem with the bloods. They are absolute pigs and will eat any smaller pellets or flakes. I have a couple of large angels in another tank but I don't trust the bloods with the angels. I would certainly recommend them if you can get past ethics but what about chihuahuas or hairless cats? I really enjoy mine.

    I have 100 gallon tank with 2 Blood Parrots and one Jack Dempsey .They were all purchased at the same time and were very small. One of the Blood Parrots has chosen one of the caves and is busy moving the gravel .They are about 3.5 inches in size now, and one is a bit on the shy side. At what size do they start breeding? It truly looks as if she is nesting. You are right about their appetite they do love to eat. The other one has made its job to guard the smaller one . Not sure if you're interested in PLC's for home aquariums. I'm looking at trying Automation Direct's Click series. With my job I could go used AB or Siemens, but I want to do something others could easily replicate. My first project will be running a sump off of float switches. Right now it's relay controlled, which is fine for low water cutoff on the return pump and high water cutoff, but with a plc and Ethernet I could show alot more simple projects, even with low cost remote I/O.

      Happy belated birthday and congrats on getting a Parrot! This is normal for a Blood Parrot, especially one that is the only Parrot in the tank. Just give them time and if you go to approach the tank go slowly if they are out. Mine dart away fast if I move too quick even today. I'd suggest trying to spend some extra time at the tank when you feed. They may be more likely to come out then and if you spend time they hopefully will get more comfortable.

      @TheAquaticCoder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can keep one in a 35 gallon. 30 gallons is the generally accepted minimum tank size for one. Just keep in mind tanks mates as they might not like another cichlid in that size tank. I'd go for bottom feeders or faster fish.

      I have 2 in a 35 to start they stay together and seem to enjoy each other. 1 turned out to be male and is attempting to fertilize eggs but I’m 100% sure there will be no babies.

    My blod parrot developed some black spots over the last few days. Is it a maturing issue? It's about 3" and has been in my 75 gallon for about 3 weeks. Tank mates include: Albino Oscar, Firemouth x3, Jack dempsey, green Severum and a striped raphael catfish.

    • @TheAquaticCoder

      That's common and mine did too. It is especially common in younger parrots and when they are in a new aquarium. I don't think it is anything to worry about. Mine would get them for a week or so about once a month while mine were young. It stopped once they were 5+ inches.

      The shyness is common for Blood Parrots. The best advice I can say is have hiding spaces where you can see into. Then you can see them and hopefully they will get more comfortable over time. Mine still run and dart away if I move too fast.
      As far as the white holes that does not sound good. I have not seen that personally. See if you can google common cichlid diseases and those symptoms.

    My blood parrot fish's mouth is close so it means it can damage???

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they usually have trouble opening and closing their mouth so they can't really do damage by biting. They could still potentially chase and injure a fish by swimming into them but it's unlikely compared to other cichlids their size who can bite.

    I have a 60 gallon angelfish community tank. I have about 20+ fish in it so far (not all angels) Is that too many to add a blood parrot?

    • @TheAquaticCoder
      @TheAquaticCoder  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on the types of fish. If they are mostly smaller fish like tetras for example then no issues. If you have like 8+ Angelfish then it probably wouldn't be the best idea. Do you have a full list you could type up?

      I'd say with what you have you are pretty close to capacity. If you have no issues with nitrates/ammonia with your current maintenance/filtration I don't think adding a small Blood Parrot will cause problems but I wouldn't add anymore than that. But the safe move is probably waiting till your tank is a little less stocked

    The Species is called cichlids not blood parents I have one larger then 8 scrappy is about a 12 now with my two Oscar's I had to remove him from because when Oscar's get large they are like meh when it comes down to fighting unless you have two females or two males n a female welp the Oscar's are a mating pair little known fact you can sex them without violating them the males are always darker. Anyway scrappy the demon bully fish was beating up the male I left him in because blood parrots can injury but not harm or kill. Well with that said I guess one night GG was over the fighting I hear a splash like wtf I run to my front room and seen GG had all but half of scrappys head in her mouth. These fish are VERY intelligent because aggressive behavior gets time out tank she looked at me that net then back at me and let go to her surprise to see scrappy ass snatched out. Point of this loooong ass story cichlids are not fish amateurs should get. Yes the are cute they will actually play with you they know who you are and are happy to see you with they wiggle but there are 3 in particular to avoid at all cost he got luck with one's that like him my blood parrot hates my guts charges at me spits rocks and water at me avoid this cichlid also convics and firemouth they are all tank disturbers
