Recreating Testament's "The Gathering" Tone

- In this video I try to recreate Testament's tone on The Gathering. I've heard on the record they used a Triple Rectifier, JB pickup, V30/Mesa Cab and a Beta57.
I used the following gear:
Mesa Trem O Verb
Boss GE-7
ISP Decimator
Mesa Rectifier 2x12 Cabinet (Only the V30 Speaker was miced)
This was a tough one and a little bit strange - I needed to be a bit more heavy-handed with EQ than I typically use on guitars. Let me know if you think it was nailed. - บันเทิง

Thanks man, I actually think I got a tiny bit closer today with the orange to modern clone setting on the amp (rather than the red modern used here).
I also agree this entire album rips. :)
@@aheadofmetal Would love to hear this new version. Also, when you say, “Orange to modern clone setting”, are you saying the modern setting on your amp?
@@npickle I'll probably post it eventually. I mean on the back of the amp there is a setting that moves the red modern channel to the orange power section. It sounds much better for something like testament. I honestly love the mesa but it is way too complicated for a man like me.

This is extremely impressive I'm terrible at recording I've been playing black/death for over 30 years now lol. I have a bunch of amps and impulses and a reactive load. You've inspired me to try for the gathering tone I want to try to use it for recording my own tracks. Do you think this tone would work for technical blackened death stuff? Going to try an EMG 81 into my three channel dual rectifier but it sounds much brighter/fizzier/looser than your Trem-O-Verb. Wish me luck!
Thanks man! I definitely think this tone would work for all things black/death. I heard Andy Sneap used a beta 57 on the recording which i didn't have. Maybe one tip i can give is to keep your treble knob lower than 5 and your mids a little higher. I had to take some low mid out in post. Also maybe experiment with tube rectifier setting vs "bold". I think i used bold on this, but lately I like the tube setting a bit better. I think all rectifiers are pretty buzzy sounding and dont have much 1k cut regardless of how you set the amp.
@@aheadofmetal I couldn't do it I gave up. I went back to my 5150 it just seems to gel so much better with my playing and somehow always sounds best without any EQ. Ever mess with 5150 heads?
@@MichaelDespairs Yea, I like 5150's. I sold my old one years ago because it was ultra noisey despite being modded, but it had a good sound otherwise. The Dual Rec is a strange beast. I find it pretty difficult to dial in to be honest. Not a ton of "chonk" on tap unless you use the tube rectifier and clone the red channel to the orange power section I find...
Pretty nice dude! Did you tune in 440? I can’t help but think this song is a little below D, not all the way to C#
I think i did this one in C#. If i remember correctly, thats where it was on the album. Peterson was going straight into Mesa for the Gathering, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was riding a little sharp due to how hard he was picking.

@@almostanalogtones you mean amp settings? This was red channel. diode setting, bass 3.4 mids around 4, treble around 6, presence around 2.
@@aheadofmetal will give it a shot, it has been quite challenging to dial this one, and I’m using a triple recto with a Mesa 4x12 sm57 IR. I’m wondering if the mic is the reason why I’m not there yet
@@almostanalogtones sneap used a beta 57 on this one. Never tried that mic but might be part of it. Also if I did this test again, Id probably ditch the EQ pedal and use more gain.
