  • Today we dive into legendary English electronic band Depeche Mode. "But Not Tonight" is the fourth single from their fifth studio album BLACK CELEBRATION released October 22, 1986. It was originally the B-Side to "Stripped" and was also included on the soundtrack to the American film Modern Girls (1986).

    One of my favorite DM songs although yes very commercial sounding but it's a great song. That's how I'm going to feel when I see them In October in Boston. 😊❤

    It really speaks of Depeche Mode's talent as a band, that they wrote and recorded this song in a single day. And it was even selected as the main single in the US, enough to make it into the soundtrack of a film.
    So, even if the band dislikes the song, it is a testament of their skills as musicians...

    DM played this at Austin City Limits. Amazing version with Martin on vocals.

    Love that you both genuinely like DM and to see you reacting to them even without your dad.
    The last time they played this live was at select shows during the delta machine tour with Martin singing. Definitely worth checking out, still so good, different vibe.

    I saw DM in 2005 on a whim. At the time, I hadn't planned on going as tickets were pricier than I liked. Being broke at the time, I had to consider that $55 (the ticket price) was potentially the equivalent of seeing two different bands. My friend was selling a ticket and I said, "What the hell? Why not?" I won't say too much except you will have a great time. It was a special experience. I still remember how I felt at the time looking around at the audience. I hope you do a post after you guys go to the show and let us know what you think!

      Can’t wait to give a full review after our DM experience in October. A fascinating 2 (way) different generations perspective type thing. Like my dad taking me to see Neil Diamond in 1984 ♥️🤟🏼

      @@reactionextraction I'm looking forward it! I'm so excited you guys get to go and share the experience together. I wish my dad and I could share music. There's definitely some music where we align, but our age gap is bigger than you and your kids. He's a few years shy of 80 so he's not exactly into synth pop or post punk 🤣

    You're in for a treat when you see DM live. I've seen them 3 times, will be 4 in November, and those concerts are among the happiest memories of my life. DM does live shows better than almost anyone.

    Sadly, no chance of them playing "But Not Tonight". They don't like the track as they were forced to write a song for the movie (presumably) in the video by the record company. I like it!

    • @ijustneedmyself
      @ijustneedmyself ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a shame because I think it's a great song despite that. It just goes to show you that having a negative experience can taint something good forever. There are certain songs that remind me of a not great time so I don't like to hear them.

      Martin didn't write But Not Tonight for the film, it was a b-side to the Stripped single. The US record company felt it was more commercial than Stripped, so they released it as the a-side in America and arranged for it to appear on the Modern Girls soundtrack. You are right about DM's feelings though, they were horrified and regard BNT as a "throwaway track".

    BNT is a fan favorite, but DM themselves regard it as a "throwaway track" - they were shocked when the US record company took this song that they recorded in a day (b-side to Stripped, a song they labored on for weeks) and made it a single and put it on a big film soundtrack. They regarded Stripped as a turning point for their career into more mature, darker material - and BNT as more akin to their earliest lightweight stuff. They also notoriously hate making music videos and you can tell they're not pleased for a variety of reasons in this video!

      Sin embargo la han tocado de ven en cuando en sus conciertos, asi que tan "desechable" es, lo unico que es que Stripped les costó grabarla en el estudio una semana y esta canción les salió bien en un solo día de grabación y para ellos fue humillante que en EEUU pusieran de Cara B en el single a Stripped en vez de But not tonight.

      They have no thoughts. It's like watching Zombies with literally no thoughts of their own. "I'm a fan of Depeche Mode and it's like a Depeche Mode song". FFS! Beyond dumb! Sorry Dad but they need smacking. Hard!

    Es mejor reaccionar al Extended Remix, es mas contundente, aunque apenas se diferencia de la original
