If this theory is true, I would like to add my own headcanon into the mix. Opaline probably felt that her mother Twilight was soft on protecting Equestria. Opaline probably never understood friendship at all, basically much worse than Sunset and Starlight ever were. Sunset Shimmer was craving attention and was jealous of Twilight, she was never truly evil. Starlight at one time believed cutie marks were negative for ponies, she believed by eradicating them she was doing the right thing. Opaline might simply just be a terrible pony and there's nothing wrong with that. Opaline probably went to see Sunset and Starlight for council, only to be scolded for her beliefs. Opaline honestly is more like Chrysalis than Nightmare Moon.

Let’s say if Twilight gave birth (somehow) to opaline were if you support the fluttercord ship or just discord in general don’t you think that opaline would’ve said something about discord or his and fluttershys relationship OR his possible children or grandchildren. I think it's definitely canon that she was born an alicorn, since she talks of birthright. But instead of twilight's child, I think she's more likely flurry's, since she notes that alicorns are immortal and it could easily be much further down the line generationally. Her having a gem name points to it, plus having multicolored curls like the Crystal Princesses. I mean for all we know opaline could be a nightmare/corrupted version of flurry heart, since celestia's name became "daybreaker." They share a similar palette too, and from daybreaker and nightmare moon we know that coat and mane colored can change when an alicorn is corrupted. In fact her palette is even CLOSER to midnight sparkle's
You do need to remember that Daybreaker was only ever a figment of Starlight`s imagination but it is true corrupted alicorns take new names (Nightmare Moon).

@@Konpeimimi yes but still why would she go against her own mothers aunt if she was flurry hearts child wouldn't she have ruined the whole of the crystal empire if she was so bitter, besides equestria was still thriving under twilights rule, and the crystal empire seemed to have been just fine under cadance and passed on flurry heart' rulership so what basically even pushed opaline to do such a thing and make twilight make such a hard decision as to sacrifice all of her magical strength and creating the crystals even though twilight had realised that the elemnts were just embodiments and the real magic is just friendship is the real power and not materialistic emodiments of magic. So opaline must've done something bad or evil which is why twilight herself isnt present here
Since the Princesses each represent a dynamic, Opaline being Twi's daughter carries on the kinship situation. •Celestia and Luna represent Sisterhood •Cadence and Flurry Heart are Mother/Wife(Parent/Spouse) and Offspring, in a positive light. •Twi alone is Friendship, but with Opaline is about estranged parent-child relations.
although this would also explain why Twilight looks like her younger self before becoming Celestia size it's because she put her magic within the crystal as well losing her immortality
Wow. This makes SO much sense and I'm SO worried her canon backstory will be shallow and uninteresting. Judging by how they're currently handling her character and the way G5 has been so far I think it's far too likely she's not even going to have any sort of backstory or motivations, other than she's evil and wants all the magic to herself.

One thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that only Twilight is recognised in those stories that are told by Sunny and Misty, G4 made it abundantly clear that it wasn't just Twilight, but her friends that got her to her place. Without her friends, she wouldn't have been able to do what she did but they're ignored because of course they are.

@@leaficune exactly even zipp knows at least , if you pay close attention to her map when she was talking to pipp during the 3rd ep when talking about twilight. you can see fluttershy and rainbow dash cutie marks on a post it notes. there’s no excuse for sunny tho you’re right, i also want them to explore that window below the castle of zephyr heights (the one we saw in the movie) normally when a event happens it magically gets put on a window (ex : when twilight became a alicorn) so I feel like there’s something more to that window. i also cant wait for the season finale , hopefully there’s a lot of lore and we get to know more about what happened to twilight (possibly the mane 6?) , discord , and the rest of the alicorns like flurry heart? like where is she? i have a feeling both her and twilight aren’t dead…
I think only sunny knows about twilight and her friends but not misty but yeah they could have been mentioned but I can’t lie, I would want their actresses to return but we only know Tara strong is down to play her own characters regardless of any reboot
wasn't it stated that in the journal of the two sisters that Celestia and Luna came from a faraway land AS alicorns. So it's entirely possible that because Equestria is filled with so much magic, the tree of harmony, and the home of friendship, that it's be a great place to take it. And I can see how one Alicorn who was born that way, could think of herself as a higher being. Since they're more intuned with magic, she could see that magic is hers or more of hers than theirs, since it's magic who chooses who becomes an Alicorn.
They were not born alicorns, at the scene of Flurry Heart's birth they state that the birth of an alicorn is something equestria has never seen and that it is beyond their own understanding. Celestia and Luna were turned into alicorns by Star Swirled the Bearded for their abilities to raise the sun and moon. That's not to say that Opaline being born an alicorn is impossible, it just further explains why- like you said- she may feel more entitled or above those around her.

I mean, if magic could turn someone who discovered a new form of magic into an Alicorn, then MAYBE, but it was never stated and if that was the case, wouldn't any unicorn that managed to do it turn into Alicorns? Kinda would assume star swirl would be one, simply for the pursuit of knowledge since he kinda made a time travel spell.
My apologies, I meant to say that they were able to do those things so they were most likely unicorns before being crowned- not that they were crowned for those abilities. Although ,it’s not unreasonable bc for them to be crowned for that very reason. the Sun and moon literally determine if plants grow/regulate the temperature of the planet- you would want someone with those abilities to be your ruler or to be of high power as it could scare other nations looking to conquer you away. I dotn believe there is one set reason for them becoming alicorns, but multiple. I’m not stating this part is fact ^^ pls don’t get me wrong! I’m theorizing that because of their niche magical abilities, political relationships, and the fact that they were so powerful made them great candidates for the Princess postition and that’s why they were made alicorns !
I like this theory, but I do think the killing of dragons would be a little too dark for MLP. Maybe just draining their magic/strength like Tirek would be a little more likely? Other than that, this would definitely give a great reason as to why Twilight couldn't defeat her. But now we need to know... Who was the father? I think Sawtooth’s theory on alicorns makes sense here as well. Basically, he states that you just need magic from all three tribes, no matter your intentions. And I would like to correct your point about ways to become an alicorn. In the ending of the end, the magic from the bell which had stolen magic from all three tribes, turned cozy glow into an alicorn, and she didn’t have to earn it or was born as one.
I think misty is a crystal pony, and the unity crystals are related to the crystal heart sombra wanted to unite all pony's under him and opaline is radiant hope. King sombra was mentioned in the toys for g5
I think Opaline isn’t related to Twilight. If anything she might have somehow pulled the same stunt that Cosy Glow did with the bell. Basically Opaline stole magic from each pony race and became an Alicorn.
It isnt similar to it, in the movie when sunny and izzy are going to zephyr heights, we can see the mountain that canterlot was founded, but there is nothing there

Cozy became an alicorn by absorbing a large amount of magic, but she reverted back to her natural body when she lost that magic. Opaline is depleated of much of her power as we know, so she has to have been born or made an alicorn like you said. But of course, who knows what explanation this show will create, if any at all. It really would have made more sense if it was it’s own world unrelated to g4.
I hope this theory is what the show goes with. It could also point out how narcissists work but also how maybe Twilight, with her focus on friendship type of love, didn´t do so well with familial love when she was busy (aka always) It would also explain the purple color Opaline has if she is related to Twilight somehow. Maybe not daughter or granddaughter, but maybe FlurryHearts kid (given her mane style). We know next to nothing about Flurry, so maybe she was bad at parenting? Twilight´s reluctance to seal her in stone would still make sense if she was just a student and not related. Maybe she felt guilty over the years about Cosy Glow, or maybe Cozy was the original parent to Opaline, and Opaline came out as an alicorn due to the magic boost Cozy experienced as a filly?
I’d actually love to see a male alicorn in the series. Like taking the role of ruler of equestrian instead of op alone. Then feeling like her “birthright” title was stolen from her

I like the idea of her not being able to leave her castle to keep her eternal youth. She could've been someone who artificially turned herself into an alicorn via experiments and so the transformation is very unstable. The magic disappearing only complicated things further.
Potential counter! Opaline has a curved horn, much like sombra and the umbrum from the comics. Could she be a hybrid, or even just an umbrum trying to free King Sombra? It does link with a prior potential link. If sombra is her “dad”, her aspect of thinking would make way more sense.
Opaline wants all magic to herself, shes similar to tirek. I don't think she killed any dragons but its likely she went around absorbing their magic the same as ponies, if anything it appears that she could sirectly absorb it from their fire so any dragon who tried to flame breath her got drained instantly. While her relation to tilight is a massive unknown, twilight said in her message that she put all the magic into the unity crystals. In misty's story she said that opaline's magic was stolen from her. I believe twilight did indeed drain opaline's power into the unity crystals and the crystals were set to leave opaline with only enough power to barely use magic, in the show she has a hard time levitating anything, we see her trying to cast some sort of spell but failing, however she was able to make the magic spy rat. As for opaline being outside of equestria? I don't think so, however as there would be no way for misty to get back and forth so quickly without teleportation. I don't think opaline leaves her castle because she could easily be over whelmed in her current state by ponies. Twilight said that returning magic made equestria orcthe world? Vunerable to opaline so i think it was more of the seperated unity crystals left a back ground field that made it so opaline couldn't use her divination magic (seeing from the castle, which nakes no sense since she was left powerless anyways). However perhaps opaline had domehow made a bubble that allowed her to keep some magic around her castle? Perhaps the everfree forest? And she captured young ponies who wandered in like misty and brain washed them into being her pawns. Speaking ofvthat opaline mentions allies which makes me think that she has other ponies beside misty working for her.
This is a good one and would actually explain why there would have been no choice but the drain magic and making the crystals. Especially if opalien waited until twilight’ friends succumbed to old age and the student six maybe where in their home nations at the time.
I agree this would be a far more interesting storyline for Opline. However in the comics Hasbro has been releasing about the show it seems that Opline started out as a unicorn. Maybe they will go back on this idea though
@@iloveowls90 but sometimes the comics and show both have similar if not the same outcomes. it was confirmed in the comics that twilight created the crystals, and in make your mark it was also confirmed she made the crystals there too. so it's prabobly gonna go in a similar direction as the comics. but it could really go either way
I agree with this as well. I think Opaline starting off as a unicorn and then stealing alicorn magic or whatever to make her into an alicorn might be where Hasbro could go towards. I'm also calling it that opaline stole some of twilight alicorn magic which would explain why she looked so much smaller in the hologram message. But hey, that's just my two cents 🤷♀️
True. Her name is literally opal, thats a gem, so that also relates to the crystal empire. Evem though she's not a crystal pony, her mum (flurry heart) and grandparents weren't crystal ponies either. It all checks out
I feel like opaline is Shining armor and Cadence’s kid or grandkid. She has a mix of their color schemes and isn’t too far off from flury. Also opal is a type of crystal aka crystal empire. Maybe she became corrupted by the same northern forces that corrupted sombra.
As for Misty, don't know much about her past (there is a theory out there that poses she's Alphabittle's daughter but who knows) but I do have a theory about her future. I think she will at some point turn on Opaline and join Sunny and the gang, giving us a new Mane 6 (the sleepover episode convinced me, it's probably the first time that precious little cinnamon bun has ever had fun), it will also be at/near the end or at least as soon as Opaline is able to get out of the castle as in her current state she's unable to pose any treat without a henchpony. I also think that's why Misty so klutzy (despite being maximum sneaky) and can't get the evil laugh down, because she is trying to be someone she isn't. Also think that the title "Make your Mark" is partially about Misty earning her's.
That's an interesting theory. I was thinking more along the lines of Twilight creating Opaline as an artificial creature ("made of fire") to rule and protect Equestria in the future, because she thought the burden of immortality was too much for any of her students to bear. And then Opaline got out of control and became too powerful. But both options seem a bit far-fetched for MLP. There's also the question of why magic is so much more powerful now. Maybe the claim that they're using Opaline's stolen magic has some truth to it.
Your theory is really interesting! ( And I do like it quite a bit ) Up until "Opaline can't leave her castle because she's kept alive artificially." When she outright states "Alicorns are immortal." Something along the lines of "People should respect their immortal rulers."
"The citizens of Equestria should fear and love their immortal rulers. And they will, because soon I'll give them reason to". So she's claiming that she is immortal, or at least that she will be once her full power is restored. But that doesn't disprove the theory that she isn't able to leave the castle for now. It's not entirely clear if she stays there by choice or by necessity.
Interesting theory, but I want to mention that there was shown a 3rd way a pony can became an alicorn - getting really juiced up on magic. In Season 9 Cozy Glow transformed from pegasi to alicorn after getting magic from Grogar's Bell. In G5 there is a hints that Opaline could be a unicorn originally. If that's the case, when she found a way to steal other's magic for herself, it eventually transforms her into alicorn. After which she started to believe she is worthy to rule because of that and that she was meant to be alicorn all along. Although personally I believe that Opaline actually not a normal pony at all and a creature of living magic, if Misty's words have a deeper meaning. After all it was stated that magic is alive.
With the alicorn bit - there is a 3rd way, and that being You can also become an Alicorn when you have greats amounts of power (or dark power) as evidence with Cozy glow

Being a princess of the crystal 3mpire… after many moons of search’s across equestria, learning all its magic. The princess grew even more bitter. It wasent until on day tha5 set her of into her evil plots. She has been collecting magic in secret from far lands. Once she was strong enough she rebelled from her heritage and ran away in envy….. that’s my idea for now but I donno
Here’s my full theory of what happened… Long ago a alicorn princess was born. A colour of Cotten candy. She was the daughter of queen Flurry Heart. Queen Cadence was still a youthful soul but had decided to rule with her daughter, Flurry Heart over the Crystal empire. Twilight Sparkle, the young foals gran-aunt came once or twice every year to visit her family due to her Royal duties. She also meet up with her friends every moon to work together as friends and protectors of equestria. Years later as the foal grew the princesss friends passed, one by one… As the young foal grew up in the crystal empire she was fascinated by magic, all magic. Dragons fire, griffins flight, changlings changes, kirins yin and yang ☯️ and many more creatures. She would always visit the crystal library and read every book she could find whenever she had the chance. Everyone adored the three alicorns ( Cadence, Flurry heart and Crystal Lily ). One day, Crystal Lily visited the library like normal and came across a book about the black alicorn, Sombra. As she was a keen soul she read every book about the mysterious pony. while reading the book the opal from the front of the book shined, catching the pony’s attention. When she closed the book to look at the opal. The opal shinned into her eyes. Brain washing her……. She came home one day with the book, ready to show to her mother. Flurry heart froze as she saw the words on the rusty book. “ mother! Look what I found ! “ Crystal Lily said. “ wh-what, what … WHERE DID YOU GET THAT BOOK!!” “ mother? I got it from a corner of the crystal library “”You mean the AREA WHERE NO ONE IS ALOUD! “…… yes. I’m sorry for going there mother but if I haven’t I wouldn’t of found this book! “ . The queen took the book and left the room in anger. After days the fire between the two only burned hotter. Cadence had found out about what had happened and sent a scroll to twilight for help. Twilight came days later to talk to Crystal Lily about the problem with Crystal Lily only getting madder and madder about it all…. “ you know aunt, your right… I do think that that pony is powerful….. TOO POWERFUL! I’ll COME BACK ONE DAY! FOR ALL THE MAGIC. ALL!! HAHAAHAHA…. From now on, princess… call me opaline…”. Twillight sparkle knew what her niece was up too so she had planned ahead of her plan… the only thing that she could do to stop her is… store all magic in three gems. Taking the very essence of herself along with others abilities to keep every pony safe. All that was left was the tribes splitting up taking one gem each to keep magic. While spike went with the dragons, the other creatures returned to their homes. Never to be seen again What do you guys think? Ofc this is out there but I love the idea of this theory! This is the strongest theory I've came across so far regarding Opaline. If this theory is correct, it would be interesting to learn _who_ fathered Opaline, and why he was basically absent from her life.
theory: it was an affair and Mr. whatshisname didn't wanna commit when he learned about the result of such. i can only imagine Twilight, having to rule equestia BY HERSELF, was stressful.. I'm sure Ms. Twilight needed *some* form of stress relief. (but then again.. this theory is immediately invalidated considering mlp is targeted towards younger kids. but hey- it is a valid temporary fill in until such is *actually* figured out)
My initial idea is that Opaline was a perfect student of Twilight and similar to Luster Dawn but who never cared about friendship. She somehow gained enough power to turn into Alicorn without friendship or friends
the more I think on it, the more I actually like the theory of Opaline being related to Twilight or even being her daughter. It sort of takes a page from Luke and Kylo-Ren's relationship, showing that while Opaline was born to a family of ponies that were morally just it doesn't mean that everyone in that bloodline would follow suit, plus it would add a mix of tragedy to Twilight's legacy, for all that she accomplished, what undid it was her own family, someone she tried to imbue the ideals she learned but who wasn't like her. this also sort of gives Sunny the role of Rey, not being a Mary Sue (which is something i never agreed with) but the role Rey played with being the one who would embody the traits that made her worthy of carrying on the legacy of the Jedi. Sunny adores MLP G4 (as far as the stories she grew up with) and wants to share those lessons with everyone, making her a perfect foil for Opaline, someone who was born into this line and should have embodied it, but turned away because of their sense of entitlement
I consider it possible Opaline could be Twilight’s Daughter Yet it must have been a Sad and Frustrating time Opaline Being so alone Twilight should have considered to have Another Daugther or or a son or both to take Opaline’s loneliness Away Though I consider Argyle to be Twilight’s Son which could Help with back story where Twilight and Argyle had a hard Heartbreaking measures to contain Opaline for the good of Equestria and they must have used a memory while out spell For Earth ponies Unicorns and Pegasi to forget Twilights and Opalines existence for the good of Equestria
What if Opaline really was the original sole holder of magic? What if, a very long time ago, some pony stole her magic away and divided it amongst pony kind, leaving Opaline either imprisoned or banished from the land? Perhaps Opaline was the pony race’s original queen, but someone like Gusty the Great but in that time rose against her. The pony races became divided over time due to their differences, bringing us to the events of the first Hearthswarming. Perhaps, somehow, the event in which a unicorn “harmed an earth pony” caused such a stir throughout Equestria that it broke the spell or whatever was holding Opaline back from returning? Perhaps a war began,or some other cataclysmic event was triggered in which the only way was to seal away magic.
In G4, all the changelings reformed and got more colorful, except Queen Chrysalis. I think Chrysalis escaped her statue prison, got her colors someway, and became Opaline.
Maybe they fuse together and this is why she can absorb magic like tirek could and look like a pony but her mane got the crystal color like that the changeling seem to get. When she absorb the dragon magic and her horn glow. It take the bended shape of the changeling. Her pink in her mane is the same that cozy have. Sooooo it could be one of the thing. They got stoned together. Who knows ? Beside opale is a type of Stone/gem.
I mean, Opaline`s mannerisms do remind me of Chysalis. But if Opaline is Chysalis in disguise then 1. Why be so proud of being an Alicorn and 2 why hide her true form when Misty is the only one she is trying to fool?
A fusion with Cozy Glow and Tirek is a plausible theory. Here in G5, the ponies' main goal seems to be: getting over their racism. Opaline wants to counteract that with her "alicorn pride". Since Misty is set up to swap sides, Opaline will have to blow her own cover some day.
Well, this is an amazing theory. Hovewer, I feel that- she is able to leave the castle fairly easily, but chooses not to, due to a mix of secrecy, and growing stronger.
My original thought was always that Opaline was, like, Cadence's great-great-great-great granddaughter. She's got the crystal vibes and Cadence already has the beginnings of a lineage established with Flurry Heart
I really like this theory, and it's make sense as well as interesting to think about. In spite of this, I can't help but wonder: If Opaline were Twilight Sparkle's daughter, what would have happened to Luster, Twilight's new student at the end of the last generation? What if Twilight made Luster an alicorn despite having a born heir and made her the ruler of Equestria knowing her own daughter couldn't rule properly? The task of redeeming Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow may have fallen to Opaline, who failed somehow. Similar to how Twilight friends (mostly Fluttershy) redeemed Discord and taught him about friendship! They may have influenced Opaline to desire power and her eventual pursuit to absorb the dragon's fire as a source of magic.

I'd really like to know what happened to the other tribes. Or even what FlurryHeart did during her ruling, and whether she even had a chance to rule before Opaline became a thing.
Don’t forget Luna was also an evil alicorn at the start of g4 because of jealousy, so it’s possible that what happened between celestia and Luna also happened between twilight and opiline

I'm still starting to develop a fanfic with Opalean Flury's sister. Flury and their parents idolizing Twilight started building resentment. The sprit of Sombra starts to influence her, much the way The Barron started influencing Alia in "Dune Messiah". Though that was through genetic memory and being her uncle. It would be interesting to see if I could tie Sombra to Cadance in some way. One of thpoinrs that I've been trying to work before committing a plot to paper. As the story progresses with make your mark one thing I have a feeling just as we had with the elements where they were no longer needed to protect and defeat villains, I feel as though something may eventually happen to their magical lantern and or the amulet itself in which my point is I believe they’ll come a time where equestria won’t be dependent on these artifacts to keep the flow of magic stable just as it once didn’t require an item to keep it flowing naturally for all creatures.
Wait, I thought there were three way of becoming an alicorn🤔? Like- ok first off we have somepony becoming an alicorn after a huge milestone has been fulfilled by them & over coming challenges unlike any pony else. Second (and this is rare) is the birth of an actual alicorn. Although, people and ponies alike are still trying to figure out (if they haven't figured out already) of why it happened 🤔? And thirdly (although it's mainly a theory to most people) is that they forcefully harness the power of the three Pony tribes and/or the powers of other creatures as well 😨 And there is know three ponies that fit that description which are: King Sombra, Cozy Glow & lastly Queen Opal 😰
This theory is definitely interesting and kind of makes sense though there are other possibilities that consider in this theory Such as Opaline was flurry hearts child Or that she tried to take the throne after twilights friends had passed Sense Without them twilights magic and inner strength would have disintegrated since twilight and her friends were the spirits of the elements and they supported each other
Unless she managed to obtain time travel, how would it be explained that she was around when noth princesses were still young? Or maybe she managed to obtain time travel to be around the princesses seeking attention which backfired on her via rejection.
There's no mention or even a hint of Opaline anywhere. We got a small implication of the Pony of Shadows in Castle Mane-ia, so why couldn't they slip some sort of hint somewhere in the G4 series or comics? Probably because she had been composed only this year. Your theory makes it seem like Opaline took a similar path to Prince Blueblood only worse. If she did harvest dragon power, she may very well have driven Queen Ember and all her dragon subjects away and they cut ties with ponykind all together. I wonder if she is aware of Discord and is chaos magic. I venture to ask, if she cannot leave her castle, how did she find Misty and bring her to the castle? If she ever finds redemption, would Hasbro do us a favour and make look cosmetically better?
Mmmm i dont believe shes related. In recent episodes Opaline explain her backstory. Remember the scene as little ponies Opaline attempted to say hello to Celestia and Luna when they were also young ponies, who huffed and walked away? Imagine how long that would be in the past for them to be young ponies.... Twilight was not alive then. For me it seems a standard plot. Resentment for the two Alicorn sisters grew her into who we know today, in G4 i believe she waited for Celestia and Luna to stop ruling in order to have a chance to take over and take all Prisbeam magic because of the hatred of unity magic and friendship created by the rejection and isolation she felt by Celestia and Luna.. Twilight wasnt powerful enough (maybe age has a play into it, but also Elemental Alicorns are very powerful, and we havent seen what a Fire Alicorn can do compared to a Sun and Moon Alicorn). So using a spell, she takes away Opalines power using the 3 Unity crystals by summoning all her own powers to place it into them, breaks them apart aswell to stop the 3 pony races from fighting letting magic destroy the world and puts a spell on it to ensure thier magic only comes back when the 3 races unify again. I believe this time Sunny will represent what Twilight failed to do. Shell stop her by all ponies coming together and using the power of unity magic to blast Opaline away once and for all. Will be interesting to see if this comes true 🥰
Love the video by the way but my thoughts are, how come twilight didn't use the elements of harmony like celestia did to luna to seal away the darkness in her daughter and she could of been back to normal?

But what if she is Flurry Heart's child, and when Twilight went missing, all other alicorns went missing as well, or the crystal empire had already died and been shut away either by evil or natural causes. Think about it, Opaline looks like Flurry Heart when it comes to hair, and jealous of Twilight, Opaline, the only last known alicorn, stands up to be a princess for Equestria not realizing how cruel she is.
To go along with what you're saying I have three questions. First question geographically where is Opaline's Castle compared to Maritime Bay? Secondly how is Misty able to travel from Maritime Bay back to the castle so quickly and so freely? Finally, is the reason why Misty doesn't use her unicorn magic. Is it because she doesn't have a cutie mark? One last thing. When did it become normal for ponies to have a first and last name?
I’m gonna add my 2 cents and say that Opaline isn’t Twilight’s daughter, but instead Luster Dawn’s. I’d basically think Twilight made Luster an Alicorn after doing something big (like how Celestia made Twilight an Alicorn after understanding what friendship really is). So I think after that happened, Luster gave birth to an Alicorn, being Opaline. And the castle Opaline resides looks eerily similar to Canterlot. I’d imagine the castle got transformed when Opaline took over. I’d imagine Opaline got angry & bitter at her mother for being Twilight’s student because of Twi sacrificing all the magic into the crystals.
this is actually a pretty damn good theory and sounds like it would be super interesting to see in the show! but i know for a fact that g5 isn’t going to be that clever and opaline is probably going to be the most boring villain possible
My theories is those bracers are whst keeps her trapped in her castle and maybe drove her insane cause they are real tight on her legs and keeps her in pain. Atleast thst is my thought cause they never move when she walks and they look really tight on her legs.
I have a theory too. Twilight did say “you are exposed to the world, and Opaline did say something about other alicorn existing. What if this wasn’t out of character for twilight to put magic into the crystals. What if it has been revealed that dangers out of equestria are far worse then any villain we have seen and she thought it would be best to protect equestria by closing them off from the world. Twilight said something about earth pony being activated for the first time in history. What if other dangers are coming that couldn’t come before when g4 main six were around and only now are these dangers coming. Not even dangers like the storm king, far worse dangers Adding onto the theory. If these threats want the magic it only makes sense if they are worse because it seems like magic really only exists in equestria. Sure all the creatures had their own forms of magic but if you think like for the Pegasus for instances. They can control the weather therefore other creatures or other ponies outside equestria might be jealous that the Pegasus of equestria can control weather. Adding on like for unicorns being able to casts spells and have things happen in a instant depending on a cutie mark. Or now the earth ponies for the first time having actual magic Highly doubt this would happen with all the bad writing happening but if this was the theory from this point I hope it would happen I keep reviewing what twilight is saying. This is definitely twilight because she did say she used all her strength and when we hear that alicorns use all their strength it changes them from flowy hair to non flowy hair. Ok, so there is only one hole. If she is the daughter, she is the direct descendant to the throne. The way your story could work is if somehow she (princess) proved to NOT be worthy of the title. Twighlight had no choice but to pick a different successor (Luster Dawn). The best student instead of an unworthy daughter. That would tip Opaline to the crazy side.

You and Star Strike have offered really interesting and well thought out ideas about what Opaline could be planning and her origins... which is why I know whatever the rest of G5 has planned won't be anywhere near that well thought out of good. G5 dropped the ball big time. I have little faith it will get better
There's something that just came to me in the spur of the moment. Regardless of Opaline's actual relation to Twilight is, what if her initial motivation was to be Twilight's equal in a royal sisters sort of way? I'm thinking some time after Twilight's friends past, Opaline presents the idea of her ruling beside Twilight. (Again you can play around with the details here. Was Opaline born an alicorn or ascended herself? Is she related to Twi by blood, or is she a close but wayward student? If anything, I feel that it would give some more depth to Opaline if her bond with Twilight was at least genuine at the start.) But if Twilight felt that Opaline was unfit to rule but not malicious enough too be concerned about, then she'd just say no. Then maybe Opaline starts to dabble in magic elsewhere and slowly grows more power hungry and callous over time. Then Twilight would have to step in and put a stop to her. It's not much, but I think you can add more intrigue to Opaline's character if this is the route taken. I noticed when Opaline tried to get Sunny on her side, it could have just been to get more power. But I find it more interesting if it comes from an unconcious desire to have a peer on the same level as her.
I think Opaline is a Time Traveler. Maybe one of Twilights students or her Daughter think about it Twilight was small in the Projection she doesn't look like the older one Opaline learns everything she can from Twilight in her timeline all her best and greatest spells and then goes back in time to use Twilight's Own genius against her Twilight can't beat her future self after all. The Daughter thing makes a lot of sense but so does the Time Traveler it might be a Sunset situation where it was discovered she was using dark magic and Twilight found out so Opaline ran to the past to destroy her mothers work out of spite.
This is a good theory it would make sense if ophaline was related to twilight but when I first started watching Make Your Mark the first thing that I noticed is her horn and in the my little pony movie we get introduced to tempest and when she is telling twilight about how she had a hard time as a foul it shows a little clip of what happend and tempests horn is curved just like ophaline. Tempest does come from a different place in equestria maybe ophaline and tempest are from the same place where there horns are curved. Tempest and ophaline have kind of the same shade of pink another theory that I also thought of is the evil King who wanted the crystal empire I forgot his name but he has a curved horn too maybe these three ponies are related?
My theory is that Oplaine was an alicorn who existed in G4. She was at the age of the CMC during that time. I think her evil deed happened during the series finale when Oplaine placed a spell on the CMC which prevented them from performing the Friendship Speech and help the Mane Six defeat the Legion of Doom. Her evil deed continued until G5.

I think it's most likely that Opaine was just a unicorn with a massive superiority complex who learned to harness enough dragon's fire to become an alicorn After Flurry of Emotions, I don't think Twilight would make the mistake of having a child if she was too busy running equestria.
My theory about Twilight and Opulean that, Twilight spoiled her as baby to adult, by give gifts and expensive jewels when was teenager. Also, couldn't spend time with her daughter , because of ruling Equestria and teaching new students , with that Opulean would hate her mother for caring more about everyone else than her. Then she blast them claiming to work for Mother, and now did this to get Twilight attention, but Twilight sealed her young ass in the tower as punishment. But Opulean did this to all magical creates, which took years for Twilight to explain about her daughter, now after while some ponies and magical creates start fighting overdifference, like a Dragon burning down house by accident, a unicorn using her magic to attack a earth pony, a Pegasus would have argument and then start fighting over who gets what in the Pegasus will grab an earth pony and toss them into the river, then earth pony can attack a unicorn insulting them and probably using their magic to smack them with something. Eventually these arguments become a blowout War this will be known as the Pony Wars!!! The other creatures probably just leave Equestria when the Pony War started. After the Pony War all creates and Pony kind dicided to live separately, because during the War Twilight sealed Everyone's magic into the Crystal, now other creates and ponies got mad at Twilight for doing that and tried to attack her and Opulean who's still the Tower. Twilight would use Friendships Crystal to seal the magical creates in their own territories to stop creates from attacking her and other ponies.
I think Opaline could be corrupted Flurry Heart. This theory still stands even if shes not Twilight's direct descendant, cause Twilight still wouldn't want to hurt her niece. The whole "alicorn birthright" makes so much sense with Flurry since she is the only Alicorn we see born. Her name being Opaline, a fake crystal. Flurry Heart, of the Crystal Empire.. i can see where the name could come from. Though, her name being a fake crystal could imply shes a fake Alicorn. Maybe that's why shes not full strength. She could be not a real Alicorn or an incomplete Alicorn.
one issue that i noticed with this is that Cozy Glow became an alicorn without an alicorn granting it, so it's more just shoving large quantity's of each tribes magic together in any way

I have a THEORY What if opaline use the bell. Cause cozy glow made herself alicorn in the second to last episode . And it explains why she want all the magic to herself and it never said that twilight hide the bell or move it to a different location and she could have fine the book in the hideout and took it.
This not really related to theme but.. Twilight also said something about "the spell was broken" I wonder if maybe thats why something happened with her. (she must have recorded that message before she made the crystals) But she might be still around because why would she know about that the earth ponies got magic. Maybe she got locked into the crystals, or she is the crystals can communicate with the outside world when she feels that ponies interact with the crystals, but she cant hear or see anyone just hoping that somebody is there.
You add in the part about the dragonfire, but let's not forget that she only came up with that idea when she learned about Sparky, who is far more powerful than any dragon we've seen before him. So that wouldn't line up with Opaline's past.
This was a great theory of the backstory to Opaline; it makes sense, but I wonder if she was born an Alicorn, then who might have been her parents. Even Flurry Heart had an Alicorn mom. Also, why does Twilight appear as a young princess rather than she appears in the last episode of the series as more of a 'grown up'? Something is amiss with the timespan between the beginning of Twilight's rule, this message being recorded for Sunny & company to hear and the moment when the Unity Crystals were separated. This is going to take some serious figuring out.
1:52 Celestia had to send her own sister to the moon. If Opaline was Twilight's daughter , she should have just been sent to the moon the same way and knowing Twilight and how much she looks up to Celestia, this is something she would totally do.

If this theory is true, I would like to add my own headcanon into the mix. Opaline probably felt that her mother Twilight was soft on protecting Equestria. Opaline probably never understood friendship at all, basically much worse than Sunset and Starlight ever were. Sunset Shimmer was craving attention and was jealous of Twilight, she was never truly evil. Starlight at one time believed cutie marks were negative for ponies, she believed by eradicating them she was doing the right thing. Opaline might simply just be a terrible pony and there's nothing wrong with that. Opaline probably went to see Sunset and Starlight for council, only to be scolded for her beliefs. Opaline honestly is more like Chrysalis than Nightmare Moon.

I think it's definitely canon that she was born an alicorn, since she talks of birthright. But instead of twilight's child, I think she's more likely flurry's, since she notes that alicorns are immortal and it could easily be much further down the line generationally. Her having a gem name points to it, plus having multicolored curls like the Crystal Princesses. I mean for all we know opaline could be a nightmare/corrupted version of flurry heart, since celestia's name became "daybreaker." They share a similar palette too, and from daybreaker and nightmare moon we know that coat and mane colored can change when an alicorn is corrupted. In fact her palette is even CLOSER to midnight sparkle's
You do need to remember that Daybreaker was only ever a figment of Starlight`s imagination but it is true corrupted alicorns take new names (Nightmare Moon).

Wow. This makes SO much sense and I'm SO worried her canon backstory will be shallow and uninteresting. Judging by how they're currently handling her character and the way G5 has been so far I think it's far too likely she's not even going to have any sort of backstory or motivations, other than she's evil and wants all the magic to herself.

One thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that only Twilight is recognised in those stories that are told by Sunny and Misty, G4 made it abundantly clear that it wasn't just Twilight, but her friends that got her to her place. Without her friends, she wouldn't have been able to do what she did but they're ignored because of course they are.

I think only sunny knows about twilight and her friends but not misty but yeah they could have been mentioned but I can’t lie, I would want their actresses to return but we only know Tara strong is down to play her own characters regardless of any reboot
wasn't it stated that in the journal of the two sisters that Celestia and Luna came from a faraway land AS alicorns. So it's entirely possible that because Equestria is filled with so much magic, the tree of harmony, and the home of friendship, that it's be a great place to take it. And I can see how one Alicorn who was born that way, could think of herself as a higher being. Since they're more intuned with magic, she could see that magic is hers or more of hers than theirs, since it's magic who chooses who becomes an Alicorn.
They were not born alicorns, at the scene of Flurry Heart's birth they state that the birth of an alicorn is something equestria has never seen and that it is beyond their own understanding. Celestia and Luna were turned into alicorns by Star Swirled the Bearded for their abilities to raise the sun and moon. That's not to say that Opaline being born an alicorn is impossible, it just further explains why- like you said- she may feel more entitled or above those around her.

My apologies, I meant to say that they were able to do those things so they were most likely unicorns before being crowned- not that they were crowned for those abilities. Although ,it’s not unreasonable bc for them to be crowned for that very reason. the Sun and moon literally determine if plants grow/regulate the temperature of the planet- you would want someone with those abilities to be your ruler or to be of high power as it could scare other nations looking to conquer you away. I dotn believe there is one set reason for them becoming alicorns, but multiple. I’m not stating this part is fact ^^ pls don’t get me wrong! I’m theorizing that because of their niche magical abilities, political relationships, and the fact that they were so powerful made them great candidates for the Princess postition and that’s why they were made alicorns !
I like this theory, but I do think the killing of dragons would be a little too dark for MLP. Maybe just draining their magic/strength like Tirek would be a little more likely? Other than that, this would definitely give a great reason as to why Twilight couldn't defeat her. But now we need to know... Who was the father?

I think Sawtooth’s theory on alicorns makes sense here as well. Basically, he states that you just need magic from all three tribes, no matter your intentions. And I would like to correct your point about ways to become an alicorn. In the ending of the end, the magic from the bell which had stolen magic from all three tribes, turned cozy glow into an alicorn, and she didn’t have to earn it or was born as one.

Cozy became an alicorn by absorbing a large amount of magic, but she reverted back to her natural body when she lost that magic.
Opaline is depleated of much of her power as we know, so she has to have been born or made an alicorn like you said.
But of course, who knows what explanation this show will create, if any at all. It really would have made more sense if it was it’s own world unrelated to g4.

It would also explain the purple color Opaline has if she is related to Twilight somehow. Maybe not daughter or granddaughter, but maybe FlurryHearts kid (given her mane style). We know next to nothing about Flurry, so maybe she was bad at parenting?
Twilight´s reluctance to seal her in stone would still make sense if she was just a student and not related. Maybe she felt guilty over the years about Cosy Glow, or maybe Cozy was the original parent to Opaline, and Opaline came out as an alicorn due to the magic boost Cozy experienced as a filly?

I like the idea of her not being able to leave her castle to keep her eternal youth. She could've been someone who artificially turned herself into an alicorn via experiments and so the transformation is very unstable. The magic disappearing only complicated things further.
Potential counter! Opaline has a curved horn, much like sombra and the umbrum from the comics. Could she be a hybrid, or even just an umbrum trying to free King Sombra? It does link with a prior potential link. If sombra is her “dad”, her aspect of thinking would make way more sense.
Opaline wants all magic to herself, shes similar to tirek. I don't think she killed any dragons but its likely she went around absorbing their magic the same as ponies, if anything it appears that she could sirectly absorb it from their fire so any dragon who tried to flame breath her got drained instantly.
While her relation to tilight is a massive unknown, twilight said in her message that she put all the magic into the unity crystals.
In misty's story she said that opaline's magic was stolen from her. I believe twilight did indeed drain opaline's power into the unity crystals and the crystals were set to leave opaline with only enough power to barely use magic, in the show she has a hard time levitating anything, we see her trying to cast some sort of spell but failing, however she was able to make the magic spy rat.
As for opaline being outside of equestria? I don't think so, however as there would be no way for misty to get back and forth so quickly without teleportation. I don't think opaline leaves her castle because she could easily be over whelmed in her current state by ponies.
Twilight said that returning magic made equestria orcthe world? Vunerable to opaline so i think it was more of the seperated unity crystals left a back ground field that made it so opaline couldn't use her divination magic (seeing from the castle, which nakes no sense since she was left powerless anyways). However perhaps opaline had domehow made a bubble that allowed her to keep some magic around her castle? Perhaps the everfree forest? And she captured young ponies who wandered in like misty and brain washed them into being her pawns.
Speaking ofvthat opaline mentions allies which makes me think that she has other ponies beside misty working for her.
This is a good one and would actually explain why there would have been no choice but the drain magic and making the crystals. Especially if opalien waited until twilight’ friends succumbed to old age and the student six maybe where in their home nations at the time.
I agree this would be a far more interesting storyline for Opline. However in the comics Hasbro has been releasing about the show it seems that Opline started out as a unicorn. Maybe they will go back on this idea though

I'm also calling it that opaline stole some of twilight alicorn magic which would explain why she looked so much smaller in the hologram message.

True. Her name is literally opal, thats a gem, so that also relates to the crystal empire. Evem though she's not a crystal pony, her mum (flurry heart) and grandparents weren't crystal ponies either. It all checks out
I feel like opaline is Shining armor and Cadence’s kid or grandkid. She has a mix of their color schemes and isn’t too far off from flury. Also opal is a type of crystal aka crystal empire. Maybe she became corrupted by the same northern forces that corrupted sombra.
As for Misty, don't know much about her past (there is a theory out there that poses she's Alphabittle's daughter but who knows) but I do have a theory about her future. I think she will at some point turn on Opaline and join Sunny and the gang, giving us a new Mane 6 (the sleepover episode convinced me, it's probably the first time that precious little cinnamon bun has ever had fun), it will also be at/near the end or at least as soon as Opaline is able to get out of the castle as in her current state she's unable to pose any treat without a henchpony. I also think that's why Misty so klutzy (despite being maximum sneaky) and can't get the evil laugh down, because she is trying to be someone she isn't. Also think that the title "Make your Mark" is partially about Misty earning her's.
That's an interesting theory. I was thinking more along the lines of Twilight creating Opaline as an artificial creature ("made of fire") to rule and protect Equestria in the future, because she thought the burden of immortality was too much for any of her students to bear. And then Opaline got out of control and became too powerful.
But both options seem a bit far-fetched for MLP. There's also the question of why magic is so much more powerful now. Maybe the claim that they're using Opaline's stolen magic has some truth to it.

Your theory is really interesting! ( And I do like it quite a bit ) Up until "Opaline can't leave her castle because she's kept alive artificially." When she outright states "Alicorns are immortal." Something along the lines of "People should respect their immortal rulers."
"The citizens of Equestria should fear and love their immortal rulers. And they will, because soon I'll give them reason to".
So she's claiming that she is immortal, or at least that she will be once her full power is restored. But that doesn't disprove the theory that she isn't able to leave the castle for now. It's not entirely clear if she stays there by choice or by necessity.

Interesting theory, but I want to mention that there was shown a 3rd way a pony can became an alicorn - getting really juiced up on magic. In Season 9 Cozy Glow transformed from pegasi to alicorn after getting magic from Grogar's Bell. In G5 there is a hints that Opaline could be a unicorn originally. If that's the case, when she found a way to steal other's magic for herself, it eventually transforms her into alicorn. After which she started to believe she is worthy to rule because of that and that she was meant to be alicorn all along.
Although personally I believe that Opaline actually not a normal pony at all and a creature of living magic, if Misty's words have a deeper meaning. After all it was stated that magic is alive.

Here’s my full theory of what happened…
Long ago a alicorn princess was born. A colour of Cotten candy. She was the daughter of queen Flurry Heart. Queen Cadence was still a youthful soul but had decided to rule with her daughter, Flurry Heart over the Crystal empire. Twilight Sparkle, the young foals gran-aunt came once or twice every year to visit her family due to her Royal duties. She also meet up with her friends every moon to work together as friends and protectors of equestria. Years later as the foal grew the princesss friends passed, one by one…
As the young foal grew up in the crystal empire she was fascinated by magic, all magic. Dragons fire, griffins flight, changlings changes, kirins yin and yang ☯️ and many more creatures. She would always visit the crystal library and read every book she could find whenever she had the chance. Everyone adored the three alicorns ( Cadence, Flurry heart and Crystal Lily ). One day, Crystal Lily visited the library like normal and came across a book about the black alicorn, Sombra. As she was a keen soul she read every book about the mysterious pony. while reading the book the opal from the front of the book shined, catching the pony’s attention. When she closed the book to look at the opal. The opal shinned into her eyes. Brain washing her…….
She came home one day with the book, ready to show to her mother. Flurry heart froze as she saw the words on the rusty book. “ mother! Look what I found ! “ Crystal Lily said. “ wh-what, what … WHERE DID YOU GET THAT BOOK!!” “ mother? I got it from a corner of the crystal library “”You mean the AREA WHERE NO ONE IS ALOUD! “…… yes. Twillight sparkle knew what her niece was up too so she had planned ahead of her plan… the only thing that she could do to stop her is… store all magic in three gems. Taking the very essence of herself along with others abilities to keep every pony safe. All that was left was the tribes splitting up taking one gem each to keep magic. While spike went with the dragons, the other creatures returned to their homes. Never to be seen again

This is the strongest theory I've came across so far regarding Opaline.
If this theory is correct, it would be interesting to learn _who_ fathered Opaline, and why he was basically absent from her life.
theory: it was an affair and Mr. whatshisname didn't wanna commit when he learned about the result of such. i can only imagine Twilight, having to rule equestia BY HERSELF, was stressful.. I'm sure Ms. Twilight needed *some* form of stress relief. (but then again.. this theory is immediately invalidated considering mlp is targeted towards younger kids. but hey- it is a valid temporary fill in until such is *actually* figured out)
My initial idea is that Opaline was a perfect student of Twilight and similar to Luster Dawn but who never cared about friendship. She somehow gained enough power to turn into Alicorn without friendship or friends

the more I think on it, the more I actually like the theory of Opaline being related to Twilight or even being her daughter.
It sort of takes a page from Luke and Kylo-Ren's relationship, showing that while Opaline was born to a family of ponies that were morally just it doesn't mean that everyone in that bloodline would follow suit, plus it would add a mix of tragedy to Twilight's legacy, for all that she accomplished, what undid it was her own family, someone she tried to imbue the ideals she learned but who wasn't like her.
this also sort of gives Sunny the role of Rey, not being a Mary Sue (which is something i never agreed with) but the role Rey played with being the one who would embody the traits that made her worthy of carrying on the legacy of the Jedi.
Sunny adores MLP G4 (as far as the stories she grew up with) and wants to share those lessons with everyone, making her a perfect foil for Opaline, someone who was born into this line and should have embodied it, but turned away because of their sense of entitlement

What if Opaline really was the original sole holder of magic? What if, a very long time ago, some pony stole her magic away and divided it amongst pony kind, leaving Opaline either imprisoned or banished from the land? Perhaps Opaline was the pony race’s original queen, but someone like Gusty the Great but in that time rose against her. The pony races became divided over time due to their differences, bringing us to the events of the first Hearthswarming. Perhaps, somehow, the event in which a unicorn “harmed an earth pony” caused such a stir throughout Equestria that it broke the spell or whatever was holding Opaline back from returning? Perhaps a war began,or some other cataclysmic event was triggered in which the only way was to seal away magic.

In G4, all the changelings reformed and got more colorful, except Queen Chrysalis.
I think Chrysalis escaped her statue prison, got her colors someway, and became Opaline.

I mean, Opaline`s mannerisms do remind me of Chysalis. But if Opaline is Chysalis in disguise then 1. Why be so proud of being an Alicorn and 2 why hide her true form when Misty is the only one she is trying to fool?

Here in G5, the ponies' main goal seems to be: getting over their racism.
Opaline wants to counteract that with her "alicorn pride".
Since Misty is set up to swap sides, Opaline will have to blow her own cover some day.
Absorbing magic does also turn a pony into an alicorn, ie cosy glow.

Well, this is an amazing theory. Hovewer, I feel that- she is able to leave the castle fairly easily, but chooses not to, due to a mix of secrecy, and growing stronger.
My original thought was always that Opaline was, like, Cadence's great-great-great-great granddaughter. She's got the crystal vibes and Cadence already has the beginnings of a lineage established with Flurry Heart
I really like this theory, and it's make sense as well as interesting to think about. In spite of this, I can't help but wonder: If Opaline were Twilight Sparkle's daughter, what would have happened to Luster, Twilight's new student at the end of the last generation? What if Twilight made Luster an alicorn despite having a born heir and made her the ruler of Equestria knowing her own daughter couldn't rule properly? The task of redeeming Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow may have fallen to Opaline, who failed somehow. Similar to how Twilight friends (mostly Fluttershy) redeemed Discord and taught him about friendship! They may have influenced Opaline to desire power and her eventual pursuit to absorb the dragon's fire as a source of magic.
That's what I'm thinking what happened to her and her friends? Along with every creatures in Equestria?

I'm still starting to develop a fanfic with Opalean Flury's sister. Flury and their parents idolizing Twilight started building resentment.
The sprit of Sombra starts to influence her, much the way The Barron started influencing Alia in "Dune Messiah". Though that was through genetic memory and being her uncle. It would be interesting to see if I could tie Sombra to Cadance in some way. One of thpoinrs that I've been trying to work before committing a plot to paper.

As the story progresses with make your mark one thing I have a feeling just as we had with the elements where they were no longer needed to protect and defeat villains, I feel as though something may eventually happen to their magical lantern and or the amulet itself in which my point is I believe they’ll come a time where equestria won’t be dependent on these artifacts to keep the flow of magic stable just as it once didn’t require an item to keep it flowing naturally for all creatures.

There's no mention or even a hint of Opaline anywhere. We got a small implication of the Pony of Shadows in Castle Mane-ia, so why couldn't they slip some sort of hint somewhere in the G4 series or comics? Probably because she had been composed only this year. Your theory makes it seem like Opaline took a similar path to Prince Blueblood only worse. If she did harvest dragon power, she may very well have driven Queen Ember and all her dragon subjects away and they cut ties with ponykind all together. I wonder if she is aware of Discord and is chaos magic. I venture to ask, if she cannot leave her castle, how did she find Misty and bring her to the castle? If she ever finds redemption, would Hasbro do us a favour and make look cosmetically better?

Mmmm i dont believe shes related. In recent episodes Opaline explain her backstory. Remember the scene as little ponies Opaline attempted to say hello to Celestia and Luna when they were also young ponies, who huffed and walked away? Imagine how long that would be in the past for them to be young ponies.... Twilight was not alive then.
For me it seems a standard plot. Resentment for the two Alicorn sisters grew her into who we know today, in G4 i believe she waited for Celestia and Luna to stop ruling in order to have a chance to take over and take all Prisbeam magic because of the hatred of unity magic and friendship created by the rejection and isolation she felt by Celestia and Luna.. Twilight wasnt powerful enough (maybe age has a play into it, but also Elemental Alicorns are very powerful, and we havent seen what a Fire Alicorn can do compared to a Sun and Moon Alicorn). So using a spell, she takes away Opalines power using the 3 Unity crystals by summoning all her own powers to place it into them, breaks them apart aswell to stop the 3 pony races from fighting letting magic destroy the world and puts a spell on it to ensure thier magic only comes back when the 3 races unify again.
I believe this time Sunny will represent what Twilight failed to do. Shell stop her by all ponies coming together and using the power of unity magic to blast Opaline away once and for all. Will be interesting to see if this comes true 🥰

But what if she is Flurry Heart's child, and when Twilight went missing, all other alicorns went missing as well, or the crystal empire had already died and been shut away either by evil or natural causes. Think about it, Opaline looks like Flurry Heart when it comes to hair, and jealous of Twilight, Opaline, the only last known alicorn, stands up to be a princess for Equestria not realizing how cruel she is.
To go along with what you're saying I have three questions. First question geographically where is Opaline's Castle compared to Maritime Bay? Secondly how is Misty able to travel from Maritime Bay back to the castle so quickly and so freely? Finally, is the reason why Misty doesn't use her unicorn magic. Is it because she doesn't have a cutie mark? One last thing. When did it become normal for ponies to have a first and last name?

I’d basically think Twilight made Luster an Alicorn after doing something big (like how Celestia made Twilight an Alicorn after understanding what friendship really is). So I think after that happened, Luster gave birth to an Alicorn, being Opaline. And the castle Opaline resides looks eerily similar to Canterlot. I’d imagine the castle got transformed when Opaline took over. I’d imagine Opaline got angry & bitter at her mother for being Twilight’s student because of Twi sacrificing all the magic into the crystals.
this is actually a pretty damn good theory and sounds like it would be super interesting to see in the show! but i know for a fact that g5 isn’t going to be that clever and opaline is probably going to be the most boring villain possible
My theories is those bracers are whst keeps her trapped in her castle and maybe drove her insane cause they are real tight on her legs and keeps her in pain. Atleast thst is my thought cause they never move when she walks and they look really tight on her legs.
I have a theory too. Twilight did say “you are exposed to the world, and Opaline did say something about other alicorn existing. What if this wasn’t out of character for twilight to put magic into the crystals. What if it has been revealed that dangers out of equestria are far worse then any villain we have seen and she thought it would be best to protect equestria by closing them off from the world. Twilight said something about earth pony being activated for the first time in history. What if other dangers are coming that couldn’t come before when g4 main six were around and only now are these dangers coming. Not even dangers like the storm king, far worse dangers
Adding onto the theory. If these threats want the magic it only makes sense if they are worse because it seems like magic really only exists in equestria. Sure all the creatures had their own forms of magic but if you think like for the Pegasus for instances. They can control the weather therefore other creatures or other ponies outside equestria might be jealous that the Pegasus of equestria can control weather. Adding on like for unicorns being able to casts spells and have things happen in a instant depending on a cutie mark. Or now the earth ponies for the first time having actual magic
Highly doubt this would happen with all the bad writing happening but if this was the theory from this point I hope it would happen
I keep reviewing what twilight is saying. This is definitely twilight because she did say she used all her strength and when we hear that alicorns use all their strength it changes them from flowy hair to non flowy hair. Twilight may of gotten to her old form because she used all her strength. Hasbro and Netflix you had better be onto something
Ok, so there is only one hole. If she is the daughter, she is the direct descendant to the throne. The way your story could work is if somehow she (princess) proved to NOT be worthy of the title. Twighlight had no choice but to pick a different successor (Luster Dawn). The best student instead of an unworthy daughter. That would tip Opaline to the crazy side.
i also find it hard to believe twilight would let spikes next of kin die just to hide from opal, she already took the magic why hide... wait was this not the first attempt?
I hope Twilight will show up in person in one of the episodes or the heroes will find her and everything will be explained

You and Star Strike have offered really interesting and well thought out ideas about what Opaline could be planning and her origins... which is why I know whatever the rest of G5 has planned won't be anywhere near that well thought out of good.

There's something that just came to me in the spur of the moment. Regardless of Opaline's actual relation to Twilight is, what if her initial motivation was to be Twilight's equal in a royal sisters sort of way?
I'm thinking some time after Twilight's friends past, Opaline presents the idea of her ruling beside Twilight. (Again you can play around with the details here. Was Opaline born an alicorn or ascended herself? Is she related to Twi by blood, or is she a close but wayward student? If anything, I feel that it would give some more depth to Opaline if her bond with Twilight was at least genuine at the start.)
But if Twilight felt that Opaline was unfit to rule but not malicious enough too be concerned about, then she'd just say no. Then maybe Opaline starts to dabble in magic elsewhere and slowly grows more power hungry and callous over time.
Then Twilight would have to step in and put a stop to her.
It's not much, but I think you can add more intrigue to Opaline's character if this is the route taken. I noticed when Opaline tried to get Sunny on her side, it could have just been to get more power. But I find it more interesting if it comes from an unconcious desire to have a peer on the same level as her.
I think Opaline is a Time Traveler. Maybe one of Twilights students or her Daughter think about it Twilight was small in the Projection she doesn't look like the older one Opaline learns everything she can from Twilight in her timeline all her best and greatest spells and then goes back in time to use Twilight's Own genius against her Twilight can't beat her future self after all. The Daughter thing makes a lot of sense but so does the Time Traveler it might be a Sunset situation where it was discovered she was using dark magic and Twilight found out so Opaline ran to the past to destroy her mothers work out of spite.
This is a good theory it would make sense if ophaline was related to twilight but when I first started watching Make Your Mark the first thing that I noticed is her horn and in the my little pony movie we get introduced to tempest and when she is telling twilight about how she had a hard time as a foul it shows a little clip of what happend and tempests horn is curved just like ophaline. Tempest does come from a different place in equestria maybe ophaline and tempest are from the same place where there horns are curved. Tempest and ophaline have kind of the same shade of pink another theory that I also thought of is the evil King who wanted the crystal empire I forgot his name but he has a curved horn too maybe these three ponies are related?

My theory is that Oplaine was an alicorn who existed in G4. She was at the age of the CMC during that time. I think her evil deed happened during the series finale when Oplaine placed a spell on the CMC which prevented them from performing the Friendship Speech and help the Mane Six defeat the Legion of Doom. Her evil deed continued until G5.

@@ronaldpagar6513 No, Luster and her friends aren't Opaline. But they didn't receive the Elements of Harmony. So when Oplaine caused the three pony tribes to split, they did nothing. That lead the Twilight making the crystals that store all the magic.

We actually know a third way to become an alicorn. Cozy Glow became one after absorbing enough magical energy. I think it's most likely that Opaine was just a unicorn with a massive superiority complex who learned to harness enough dragon's fire to become an alicorn
After Flurry of Emotions, I don't think Twilight would make the mistake of having a child if she was too busy running equestria.
So Opaline is basically Nightmare Moon except a jealous daughter instead of a jealous sister.
My theory about Twilight and Opulean that, Twilight spoiled her as baby to adult, by give gifts and expensive jewels when was teenager. Also, couldn't spend time with her daughter , because of ruling Equestria and teaching new students , with that Opulean would hate her mother for caring more about everyone else than her. Opulean will start plotting to mess up Equestria's peace by attacking earth ponies and saying," Bow to me peasants,I am an alicorn Above All You Ponies, you will bow to me and my mother Princess Twilight you will bow to us or feel our Wrath bye." Then she blast them claiming to work for Mother, and now did this to get Twilight attention, but Twilight sealed her young ass in the tower as punishment. But Opulean did this to all magical creates, which took years for Twilight to explain about her daughter, now after while some ponies and magical creates start fighting overdifference, like a Dragon burning down house by accident, a unicorn using her magic to attack a earth pony, a Pegasus would have argument and then start fighting over who gets what in the Pegasus will grab an earth pony and toss them into the river, then earth pony can attack a unicorn insulting them and probably using their magic to smack them with something. Eventually these arguments become a blowout War this will be known as the Pony Wars!!! The other creatures probably just leave Equestria when the Pony War started. After the Pony War all creates and Pony kind dicided to live separately, because during the War Twilight sealed Everyone's magic into the Crystal, now other creates and ponies got mad at Twilight for doing that and tried to attack her and Opulean who's still the Tower. Twilight would use Friendships Crystal to seal the magical creates in their own territories to stop creates from attacking her and other ponies.
I think Opaline could be corrupted Flurry Heart. This theory still stands even if shes not Twilight's direct descendant, cause Twilight still wouldn't want to hurt her niece. The whole "alicorn birthright" makes so much sense with Flurry since she is the only Alicorn we see born. Her name being Opaline, a fake crystal. Flurry Heart, of the Crystal Empire.. i can see where the name could come from.
Though, her name being a fake crystal could imply shes a fake Alicorn. Maybe that's why shes not full strength. She could be not a real Alicorn or an incomplete Alicorn.
one issue that i noticed with this is that Cozy Glow became an alicorn without an alicorn granting it, so it's more just shoving large quantity's of each tribes magic together in any way

What's throwing me is the shape of Opaline's horn. It's similar to Mistmane, meaning her lineage would have come from the same region
I have a THEORY What if opaline use the bell. Cause cozy glow made herself alicorn in the second to last episode . And it explains why she want all the magic to herself and it never said that twilight hide the bell or move it to a different location and she could have fine the book in the hideout and took it.

But she might be still around because why would she know about that the earth ponies got magic. Maybe she got locked into the crystals, or she is the crystals can communicate with the outside world when she feels that ponies interact with the crystals, but she cant hear or see anyone just hoping that somebody is there.
You add in the part about the dragonfire, but let's not forget that she only came up with that idea when she learned about Sparky, who is far more powerful than any dragon we've seen before him. So that wouldn't line up with Opaline's past.
This was a great theory of the backstory to Opaline; it makes sense, but I wonder if she was born an Alicorn, then who might have been her parents. Even Flurry Heart had an Alicorn mom. Also, why does Twilight appear as a young princess rather than she appears in the last episode of the series as more of a 'grown up'? Something is amiss with the timespan between the beginning of Twilight's rule, this message being recorded for Sunny & company to hear and the moment when the Unity Crystals were separated. This is going to take some serious figuring out.
1:52 Celestia had to send her own sister to the moon. If Opaline was Twilight's daughter , she should have just been sent to the moon the same way and knowing Twilight and how much she looks up to Celestia, this is something she would totally do.
